Long Way Back (Instrumental)

This is a live recording, captured at Ego club in Düsseldorf, June 5 1999.  The music has been created with a self written step sequencer, the PX-18, controlling  a basic sample player and effects engine, all done in MaxMSP, running on a Powerbook G3. The step sequencer had some unique features, e.g. the ability to switch patterns independently in each track, which later became an important part of a certain music software.

I found the recording on a backup disk today. It has not been edited or mastered. During the first 20 minutes of the set, and before the 'encore' the Monolake CD 'Gobi' is playing in the background.

Diamond Version - Were You There (with Neil Tennant)

For this edition of the Nightshade series, Phase Fatale has created an aggressive industrial techno mix. This mix displays his various influences which range from EBM, Techno, and Industrial music. 

"Phase Fatale is a techno project of now Berlin-based young DJ and producer Hayden Payne from New York. Hayden has a unique background of playing with numerous cold wave and minimal synth bands including Automelodi and his own band Dream Affair and studying Music Technology at New York University. Phase Fatale is an artistic endeavor that’s born out of his various musical ventures over the past 7 years combined with his penchant for the darker, harder and industrial-leaning techno. Phase Fatale demolishes the border between music and noise to create a new progressive vision of techno – the sound of future war, whether it’s captured on vinyl or an extract of the digital static.

For live sets Phase Fatale uses exclusively hardware to achieve his distinguishable sound while his DJ sets features a unique blend of techno laced with EBM and synth gems. His 2014 debut EP Skyscraper on Italian label Avant! Records moves between noise-ridden soundscapes and minimal industrial techno rhythms, capturing the spirits of both EBM classics and modern contemporaries. His next releases are due out in early 2015 on Berlin-based label [Aufnahme + Wiedergabe] followed by Jealous God. Phase Fatale has played alongside acts such as Clock DVA and Cold Cave around the globe from Los Angeles to Moscow."

There’s something about Document One’s highly individual style which has resonated with DJs and ravers alike. Throughout 2016, their releases took up almost permanent residence at the top end of DnB download charts and in the sets of the most discerning selectors. They de ned their own sound, culling elements from multiple genres and weaving them into dancefloor mayhem. And, if this release is anything to go by, they’re going to do it all over again in 2017.

The ethereal horns and vocal sample in the intro set the scene, building an edge of tension. It’s got all of that smoky moodiness that Document One can deliver, combining tech darkness with a jazz sensibility. Delicate hints of percussion mark the way, and there’s still no hint as to whether we’re heading towards laid-back cool or road-hard savagery in the drop. It’s Document One, after all, and they can do either.

Last Autumn I was captured by the Russian government and force-fed vitamins by Vlad and this mix aims to provide a concise summary of the events that took place.

As the leaves start to fall off the trees and that distinctive chill in the crisp autumn air returns, I am called to slow down and turn inwards.  Autumn is represented by the medicine wheel direction of West and the colour blue (or sometimes black).  In Ayurveda, autumn is represented by the Vatta (wind) dosha.

May this melodic and emotive mix help to relax and create space for introspection.  The title comes to me from what I could remember from a recent dream…  [I remember being asked 2 questions.  I cannot remember the 1st for the life of me.  The 2nd involved making a connection between a canoe and a cave.  I began my story explaining how reality was a sort of illusion and how physical journeys were actually more about the inner journey - what goes on inside someone.  Henceforth, it matters not whether you are travelling in a canoe or sitting in a cave.  A cave is a type of canoe.  The journey is inside regardless.]
