Pianist/Composer Michael Jefry Stevens (born 1951 in NYC) performs extensively in Europe, Latin America and North America. He has composed over 350 works for both large and small ensemble. As an active band-leader for over 30 years his working musical ensembles include the Conference Call Quartet, The Fonda/Stevens Group, the Hungarian Eastern Boundary Quartet, the Griffith/Stevens Quartet, The Finnish “Brain Inventory Trio”, and most recently a quartet featuring New Orleans saxophonist Brian “Breeze” Cayolle.  Mr. Stevens’ music has been released on more than 80 cds under his name. He has performed and/or recorded with some of the top names in Jazz including, Dave Liebman, Dave Douglas, Valery Ponomarev, Cecil Bridgewater, Dakota Staton, Bill McHenry, Leo Smith, Perry Robinson, Matt Wilson, Gerry Hemingway, Mark Feldman, Han Bennink and many others.  He was the “Margaret Lee Crofts Fellow” for 2000-2001 at the MacDowell Colony, was a 2006 Centrum Arts composer fellow, was a member of the BMI Jazz Composer’s Workshop, and was voted runner-up Jazz musician of the year (2009) by Chicago JazzNet.  In 2011 the Penguin Jazz Guide voted the Fonda/Stevens Group “Evolution” one of the top 100 important modern jazz recordings.

KRIS TINER is a California-based trumpet player, composer, and educator. Featured on NPR Music as one of a handful of new trumpet voices impacting modern music, his playing has been described as “extraordinarily inventive” in Signal to Noise Magazine, and the LA Weekly claims “Trumpeter Kris Tiner can turn barbed wire to beauty.” His music has been performed on five continents, his 60+ recordings have been enthusiastically reviewed in the international jazz press, and he has performance credits on MTV, NBC, PBS and Comedy Central. Tiner has been recognized with awards from ASCAP, IAJE, the American Composers Forum, Chamber Music America, Montalvo Arts Center, KCMEA, and the Kennedy Center. He is a member of the acclaimed Empty Cage Quartet, and he collaborates with New York guitarist Mike Baggetta in the duo Tin/Bag. Tiner also performs regularly with the Industrial Jazz Group, Chris Schlarb’s Psychic Temple, pianist Cathlene Pineda, the Los Angeles Trumpet Quartet and the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. He holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts and a BA in Music from CSU Bakersfield. He is an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of Jazz Studies at Bakersfield College, and has also taught at CalArts, CSU Bakersfield, Taft College, and the Academy of Creative Education in Los Angeles. Tiner is the founder of Epigraph Records, an independent label dedicated to the documentation of new creative music recorded in Bakersfield.
