Drunk in Japan is a call for change.  Japan is a metaphor for our destination to find success as a band. Japan was our location of choice as it represents an alternative place and culture – that seems very different to the life we live now. Most people can relate to wanting to make a change to their life and when it happens they can 'drink in' the success of having achieved their goal.

The Kites – Living Room: Upbeat alternative indie-pop house party track about friends, relationships, and live music in the familiar surroundings of a mate’s house. Living Room was inspired when a member of the band threw an impromptu house party and it was a night to remember!

LIVING ROOM

Emily Emily is a song about that one person who you just can't stop thinking about. You are drawn to them even though you never really get to know the real person behind the front they put on. They like the attention you give them but they are not serious or honest about who they are or what they want.  Because they are not open - you are always left second guessing where the relationship is going. They thrive on situation-ships and they cheat on you without hesitation. You know you should forget about them but you can never quite get them out of your mind - regardless of how hard you try!

MYSELF was written out of frustration. It addresses gaslighting within manipulative friendship groups. It expresses the coming to terms with feelings of helplessness of being in a situation where nothing you do will alter the outcome of losing friendships.

MYSELF communicates the frustration of a lack of control and being mad at oneself for being trapped in a situation.

JADED was inspired from a personal experience that most people can relate to. It is about being in a relationship, and then the noise surrounding the relationship confuses the feelings of the two people involved. The drama created by friends or exes prevents real, open and honest conversations. The individuals feel torn between their friendships and their relationship.

Sometimes we all feel that we are caught up in the drama of personal situations. It is as though life is the film and we are all actors playing our part. We may be manipulated into playing a role that feels scripted and that we are not in control of the narrative. Sometimes the best action is to take control of your reality, walk away from situations and not be drawn into conflict.

FILM

LS21 is the postcode where the band was raised. As a young band they are saying goodbye to their childhood as they embrace growing up. This song evokes the nostalgia of youth, the joy of growing up surrounded by countryside and the familiarity of home. As they mature they acknowledge there will be challenges and decisions they will need to make as they step out into the world.

When you meet someone on a night out but you come across as nervous.  You’re not yourself. You pay them a compliment and they are quick witted and put you in your place. Somehow, you recover and get their number. 

When you get home you can’t shake the feeling of embarrassment. You find yourself thinking about them.  So you call them later for a fresh start. You pick up the phone – Hello!

'Drive' completes The Kites' second EP, Headlights - a vibrant follow-up to their debut, EP Postcode.
Drive is a track to escape to. When things are tough and you need to clear your head– you just need to get in your car, put on your music and Drive. It is about telling your mind to ‘Shut
up’ and to escape from the place and situation you are in.

Comeback Kid represents rediscovering your place in the world following feelings of being disconnected and disregarded. This journey of rediscovery includes reflections on your environment and despite society’s challenges, you find a way through to regain your standing to once again become who you once were, with the desire to live your life better than ever before.

The Kites are a young band from Leeds. Brothers Joe (vocals) and Ollie (drums) grew up making music together before linking with Jake (guitar) and Élodie (bass).

Their songs carry sharp guitars and lyrics that feel lived in, finding weight in the everyday. They’ve already played Leeds Festival, Truck, Y Not and Kendal Calling, and their next London headline is at Beavertown Social on 13 November.

Two EPs in, Postcode and Headlights, The Kites are building a catalogue that feels as natural in small clubs as it does on bigger stages. Live, it’s four teenagers making noise for the right reasons.
