Choosing from WORM’s collection of waveform research tools - Jorge played a signal path comprising lock generation, phase detection and spectrum shaping.

Meitei’s 2018 album Kwaidan was one of the year’s slow-burning successes. Originally released on cassette through Evening Chants, Kwaidan’s reputation eventually grew to such an extent that it was named one of the year’s best experimental albums by Pitchfork. To coincide with the first time vinyl release of Kwaidan, we have a mix from Meitei to share with you for Bleep Mix #81.

Meitei says - ’This mix is based on some old Japanese music that I have picked with the current Meitei theme of the “lost Japanese mood” as a reference. I remixed and edited the traditional music in my own style. 

There are places in Japan where the scenery expressed in this mix still survives. What will they look like in the new Japanese era “Reiwa”? At least I think it’s interesting to personally edit the footprints of the previous era to make such a mix. This made it possible to touch a world that I don’t even know.’

PΛRΛ is an audio-visual project of Mickey Babalon & Sheepwolf (both referring to themselves as “Children Of The Eastern Bloc”) that came to life in 2018. It is mainly focused on musical experimentation rooted in various genres of dancefloor-oriented electronics. Early releases on labels $upra and Xenonyms clearly derived from dubstep and trap aesthetics but in a rather minimalistic and deconstructive manner. The raw sounds created an atmosphere reminiscent of illegal techno parties and smoke-filled warehouses. PΛRΛ’s mixes are a blend of various genres and styles, so always expect the unexpected.

The idea with this mix is to sequence a tracklist which captures my own mental model of Isozaki’s building. The spiraling of the Boerdijk–Coxeter helix tower represented as the cross changing of English handbell ringing, or the mist of the rock fountain represented as the air of breath - but also to mix contemporary music with work from around the time of the building’s construction to capture the way in which architectural monuments - which always bears the historical legacy of the time in which it was designed and constructed - are continually juxtaposed with contemporary physical reality as we continue to observe, reassess and inhabit them as an objects in time.
