"This is the last voicemail I received from my father, a month before he drunkenly fell down the stairs and smashed his head hard enough to kill him. He was so drunk that he called me by my brothers name. I had been ignoring his calls since the last time I had seen him, 5 months before, on his birthday. Before that, we were estranged for 7 years, and I had ignored multiple calls a day from him for the entirety of that time."

"He used to call me at night after the bars closed.  I used to answer.  He would tell me he loved me, which I wanted to believe so badly.  In the morning he would call to tell me he didnt really remember what he said but he wanted to make sure I knew he didn't mean it.  This isn't the last time we ever communicated, but it's the last message I have where he said he loved me.  I've saved it for over 4 years and still listen to it occasionally.  I wish he would tell me he loved me when he was sober."
