Scripture Readings: Daniel 6:1-5, Matthew 5:13-16

Jesus Christ announced His public ministry with an announcement for sinners to ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near’ (Matt4:17). Those who repent are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with their repentance and live according to the counter-cultural attitudes of the Kingdom: -they are expected to bear fruit (Jn 15: 2, 5; Gal 22-24). Specifically, they are required to exert godly influence on their environments by functioning as ‘salt of the earth and light of the World (Matt: 5: 13- 16). One must first BECOME ‘salt and light’ before one can FUNCTION as salt and light. If you want become ‘salt and light’, you must first respond to Christ’s call for repentance by 1. Admitting you are a sinner who has offended a Holy God and deserves punishment for it (Rom 3:23; Rom 6:23) 2. Believing that Jesus Christ died in your place to satisfy God’s justice (Matt 9:12-13; Matt 20: 28). 

We function as ‘salt and light’ when for God’s glory alone, we are easily identifiable by the godly influence we exert through our counter-cultural attitudes and lifestyles based on God’s word. In any work we do, we can conduct our lives like Daniel did when he served as governor (Dan 6:1-5) 1. We should be careful not to let work become an idol – it should not climb to number one position in our lives ahead of God 2. Our God is an excellent God and we should strive for excellence for His glory. 3. Short-cuts can be long – Christians should not compromise on God’s standards for the sake of promotions. Promotion belongs to the Lord. 4. Corruption, negligence and the like should not be associated with believers in the work place. 5. Respect all you work with, reflect integrity, seek to deliver the best attainable results and leave your job better than you found it.

Intentionally look for opportunities to share the gospel with colleagues.
