Closing out this year’s show with a strong finish, Bright Patterns welcomes Ananda Metelina AKA mayilovesummer—a New York based DJ, event producer, and co-founding member of Hybrid Identity. As a musician, they spin a mix of dark, hypnotic, broken beat techno, experimental, and ambient—including references to their roots, by mixing in sounds inspired by Vaishnavism and Eastern sonic patterns. As a vibe curator and culture creator, they aim to establish diverse and inclusive spaces that allow for shared cathartic experiences, while centering and celebrating queer, trans, and female bodies. Russian-born and raised, they know the true meaning of community as resistance; with their life work being to provide safety and joy to their diaspora.

When a silence keeps its presence for an extended period of time, initial chaos quiets down, inner rhythms even out, and eventually new thoughts and ideas start to emerge from the depths of your mind. When the familiar world felt apart after the initial shock, calmness, and introspection came forward. Dark corners of the subconscious were illuminated by a renewed source of light. This mix was recorded in the midst of quarantine in April 2020 as withdrawals from the old world were in full bloom. It is a one person's reflection on turbulent and uncertain times.

RAVE SCOUT #043: MAYILOVESUMMER (HYBRID IDENTITY, BK)

@mayilovesummer, Brooklyn-based artist and DJ, was enthralled by various electronic sounds when she was first exposed to the nightlife scene during her teens in her home country in the southwestern city of Krasnodar, Russia. The sense of freedom and magic provided by rave spaces enabled her to be whomever she wanted. She proceeded with her journey as she moved to NYC in 2009, forming @hybrididentity with friends from post-Soviet territory in 2019—an event and podcast collective. Mayilovesummer oscillates her interests between spirituality and gender studies to produce a journey of ambient, experimental, bass, and deep psychedelic techno sonics in Cookie Series #043.
