Bright Patterns with Vicki Siolos @ The Lot Radio 07 - 30 - 2020

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

This month we have invited @kamarujoseph to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero-patriarchal systems of oppression.

KMRU is the moniker of Joseph Kamaru, a sound artist, and producer based in Nairobi. He is a regular performer at the fabled Nyegenyege Festival having also presented live performances at CTM festival and Gamma Festival. Aside from his music production, KMRU has also been presenting a monthly show on Internet Public Radio and runs the Nairobi Ableton User Group community as well as developing projects on radio art and artificial intelligence. KMRU recently participated at Mutek Montreal AI Art Lab and Gamma Lab XR (2020) collaborating on artistic based projects on artificial intelligence and extended realities.

It’s been an extraordinary first year of Bright Patterns, and what better way to celebrate an anniversary than with a special guest whose music is often featured on the show. Vicki kicks things off in the first hour, followed by an hour of original, unreleased music by Joshua Davison. He’s released on Skam, Digitalis, and several other labels over the last two decades, and also appears on the latest Mysteries of the Deep compilation. It would have been a pleasure to have him compile a DJ set for the show with his incredible taste in music, but an hour of his own productions marks this as a special event. Most people don't really figure out how HKS97 belongs to ://about blank but it's still obvious that he is just as much part of this club as the red caravan in the garden. Research brought to light that he actually worked as a writer for events at ://about blank. And of course often, but not often enough, he steps behind the DJ decks of his favorite club as well. Together with Yobovski he earned some fame with with the Leftfield and Dance music project Freude am Sitzen, named in reference to a, back then well known, Tech-House label from Thuringia. Today his musical journeys explore Electro, Breakbeat, House and Synth Wave territories while his love for sinister Ambient sounds shines through from time to time.
