Sorry Records has been responsible for some of the most exciting music to come out of North America in recent years, but Nick and Tony don’t just have an eye for talent – they understand the higher purpose of a record label: to support and nurture; to “unify and unite”. They understand this because they understand dance music, and as this episode proves, their knowledge of its history runs submarine-deep.

We talked about the corporatisation of the underground, acid epiphanies, Boiler Room, why a record label needs to do more than just release good music, and this episode’s main theme: the network of North American dance music that ultimately drives Nick and Tony’s mission. This is the Sorry Records story to date – but it’s also much more.

This mix by Berlin-based Turkish artist DJ Strawberry showcases some of the recent musical developments in footwork —the frenetic, ultra-syncopated dance form for superhumans born out of ghetto house— mainly in its minimal expression. This puzzle built with four CDJs also illustrates part of the catalogue of the Wroclaw-based label outlines (Chicago is sometimes referred to as the American Warsaw), one of the most interesting in the genre today. 

In fact, the main idea of the mix is based on the concept of "cycles" developed by this algorave artist in the records he has released on the Polish label, "consisting of simple loops interlocking to each other to create complex structures." In a sense, this footwork perspective functions like the museum-like abstractions of techno in the nineties, in such a way that it deepens the second term of the funk/machinic (or post-funk), dance/contemplation, analogue/digital binomials, and it is here that the second idea of the mix emerges, that is, the linear or algorithmic directionality, together with the forms of the craggy rocky geographical features of the canyons or mountains of Japan, inspiration of the percussive genre gorge, present here in its raw, distorted and noisy expressions.

Dialektik Podcast #17 - DJ Strawberry

A hometown glory mix from EM + STAV spotlighting the wealth of forward-thinking talent in Bristol.

Having previously released on Intergraded, Gottwax, and Earful of Wax - production and DJ duo EM + STAV launched their own imprint, JoyLift, earlier this year. Originally starting as an event series, the pair launched the label arm with their own EP, 'Endless', drawing from Bristol's storied bass mutations as a springboard for their own modernist take on dance music and featured a remix from Forest Drive West. 

Alongside their production output, EM + STAV are firmly committed to helping bring through the next generation of artists and give them the opportunity and platform to hone their skills via their independent projects such as Mix Nights and Restless Nights. Their UK-centric DJ sets that tap into the old and new sounds of UK bass and UK techno have seen them play at storied events and festivals such as Field Manuevers, Gottwood, Love International, Paloma, Headroom and Livity Sound showcase.
