Long before The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays fused dance music with beats, Rolo McGinty and The Woodentops were being played in Ibiza and getting On-U Sound man Adrian Sherwood to remix them. Their live version of 'Why Why Why' - recorded in Los Angeles the night the band first experienced Ecstasy - was played by DJs as diverse as Fabio & Grooverider, Trevor Fung and Paul Oakenfold, the latter signing it for the first ever Balearic Beats collection.  When legal wrangles caused them to put The Woodentops name on hold, McGinty went on to become Pluto and an integral part of part of Mr C's pivotal early 90s house/techno Plink Plonk crew, programming many of the label's key tunes as well as productions for Robert Owens, Orbital and many others. To celebrate the release of a 12" of remixes of The Woodentops' 'A Pact', he's only gone and done us a classic, house-leaning mix of reworks, rare tracks and deep cuts.

We don't know a great deal about Volruptus to be honest.  We believe it to be one man, who is from Reykjavik, although his Facebook page suggests he might reside in Berlin.  For a bit more info into who exactly is behind the Volruptus moniker though, that's where his Facebook page stops being useful, stating simply "He brought the BASS from outer SPACE! 2 YER FACE!!! The Unruly and groovy. The sneaky and freaky. The Alien Boogie commander known as Volruptus is on a mission to make you move!".  

So let's focus on what we do know then.  We know that Volruptus's musical output has been absolutely impeccable, in just a few releases, he's defined a sound which takes influence from British rave culture, Detroit electro and more experimental sounds of the 90s but which is wholly his own.  Through releases on Sweaty Records, which may or may not be his own label, Nina Kraviz's, TRIP and fellow countryman, Bjarki's, bbbbbbb, Volruptus's music has managed to become cult in just two short years.  His records are collectables in the making, mysterious, intricate and futuristic whilst remaining undeniably dance floor.  It's probably no surprise that we see him work alongside Kraviz and Bjarki who seem to embody a similar mystique in what they do.  For his Dimensions mix Volruptus seriously delivers, with an hour of energetic but detailed pure space funk from a real life alien boogie commander.

There's Liquid's 'Feel 3' and Leftfield's 'Fanfare Of Life' from 1992 and Luca Lozano's 'Essential Elements' and Truska's 'Lucid' from this year, mixed into to a bunch of other electrifying records either released in the early '90s or the last two years.
