Currently based in Vancouver, BC, Adam 2 (@adamtwo) is a DJ, producer, organizer, and perhaps above all, a devotee of the dancefloor. They are the kind of person who's likely to have a meet-cute story with a surprising number of your friends from everywhere in the world (we met over a popsicle in the front row of No Way Back once upon a time). They bring the same spirit of community and giving they bring to the dancefloor to their engagement with the music community, most recently through their label @pprzrecords with DJ Hockey and their Afrofuturism is NOW mix series.

"So for mixes usually, I’ll find a few songs which have a common narrative/story. Then with that narrative in mind, I'll think about what the start and the end of the story sound like and do I have songs which I can use for the start and the end. I’ll usually then split the mix into 2-3 parts (3 parts for a recorded mix, 2 parts for a live performance) and each part will have the same shared theme but different energy levels.

For this one, I had a few electro tracks which weren’t really based on phrases, but were long and evolving, so I could mix them as textures kinda like how I would mix techno. There is a mix of electro/bass/techno throughout, however I purposely tried to avoid songs with 4x4 kick patterns.

In terms of a narrative I envisioned a soundtrack to a science fiction movie, recounting a story of a journey gone wrong, and elements known (science) vs. elements unknown (religion/ritual). It is always interesting to reflect on when a mix was recorded and how it reflects that period of time; for me it reflects a period of Winter, an ongoing pandemic and a bleak view of the future. I wouldn’t be able to record the same mix now because I am in such a different place emotionally and musically compared to a few months ago.

It was honestly so fascinating while writing the interview for this mix series to realize I’d come full circle and I was playing electro again but in a new way, after discovering it years ago and leaving it behind after getting so tired of it."

On January 22nd, 2023 the world celebrated the Lunar New Year, and the gate was opened to welcome the astrological proclivities and inclinations of the Yin Water Rabbit. Now, on February 1st, patiently and excitedly awaiting for the arrival of the Rabbit, which is to occur on February 4th, we celebrate the new year and the arrival of a very special contribution to our fledgling series, provided by the inspirational selector, and friend of many years, Cay Horiuchi.

In Cay's words: 

"This mix features some of the tracks I played for a cute underground NYE party organized by my friends in the unceded lands of the Chinook and Multnomah tribes. Living in the Pacific Northwest, this season is when I long for sunshine the most. Take a sonic journey with me all the way from South Africa, Japan, Algeria, U.S., Taiwan, and beyond.

PPRZ Promo Mix: Variety Pack Vol. 02

For entry number 10 in the PPRZ Podcast series, we have a mix from New York's @threehz

threehz is an explorer of textural, dream-like emotion. With sets ranging from sludgy dark psychedelia to kaleidoscopic warpdrive techno, threehz is a rising tripped-out player throughout New York City’s techno dance floors. 

His namesake is an inaudible but mystical frequency associated with theta waves, dreams, meditative states, and divination - a frequency allegedly imbued with brutal physical power that could topple speaker stacks if they were only capable of reproducing and amplifying 3Hz. With a deep grounding in musical esoterica and a previous life in metal music - most recently as part of celebrated avant-metal outfit Sannhet – threehz is a full-bore sonic experimentalist. 

threehz’ DJ career has been on a long arc, launching in earnest with an exploratory, cross-genre show on The Lot Radio with friend and Sannhet bandmate AJ XO. The pair’s collaborative work, titled NO DAWN, has been in rotation on The Lot for seven years, and has yielded expansive joint sets at recent editions of the Shaker Mountain festival. 

His deep and psychedelic techno series “dream/self” at Queens mainstay Mansions has showcased him alongside other like-minded techno experimentalists, and he has made regular appearances at the venerable Bossa Nova Civic Club. threehz’s continued passion for distilling and blending psychedelic sounds has yielded focused and deep dives into techno for densely foggy dancefloors and pulsing colors – a place threehz himself is likely to be found at the blurry morning hours.

threehz describes their mix as “This winter has felt very long and dark for a lot of people, myself included.  A lot of difficult energy has been in the air, but finally in the past week or two it feels like spring is trying to break through the darkness – literally and figuratively.  I think this mix reflects that – starting in a darker, confusing space and eventually working itself to a place with a glimpse of hope. It’s a bit darker than what I’ve been playing lately, but I think it is true to both my roots and my more recent focus.  Selection wise, I tried to pull from classic 90’s material through brand new releases, and I tried to work in a third deck a bit more than usual for some tripped out layered bits. I hope you enjoy the journey!”
