Pride 2020: The Sound of New York 
A 56+ hour dance-a-thon fundraiser via The Lot Radio
Pride started with a riot, the first brick to fuel the movement was thrown by our black trans sister Marsha P. Johnson. Because of her, throughout the years, Pride has been a time to get together and celebrate the fight for equal rights, the family we lost to HIV/AIDS, and being seen in the streets amongst other things. This year, we have the opportunity for community driven efforts away from the corporitization of pride and we must align with our Black Queer/Trans sisters and brothers and not only look at racism within the LGBTQI+ community, but also help amplify their voice (in this case with a beat) in their struggles for equality.
Pride and dancing go hand in hand, and with clubs closed around the world, we wanted to take this moment to highlight the colorful New York LGBTQI+ dance music community with a 56+ hour dance-a-thon with fundraising efforts geared toward Black Trans/Queer orgs. Via The Lot Radio we'll soundtrack your weekend whether it be a park hang, a BBQ, a small gathering with friends, or a protest. All we ask for in return is a donation (link will come on Thursday, June 25) which will be split between The Okra Project , Black Trans Travel Fund, For the Gworls, Black Trans Femmes in the Arts, Trans Women of Color Survival Fund, G.L.I.T.S. Inc., New Alternatives and some of the streaming artists that need financial assistance due to the nightlife economy being shut down.

Sterling Juan Diaz is a Dominican American DJ and multidisciplinary artist hailing from Uptown New York City. He is known for his distinctive approach to music, exploring the fringes and nuances of various genres from around the world, within the NYC underground scene, and his roots. Drawing from many corners of dance music, he crafts dynamic sets that evoke a sense of connection and exhilaration, with an ear like no other. As a recent Dweller Festival alum, Sterling is considered one of the most consistently exciting DJs in NYC. His performances are known for their open exploration of energy, dancefloor rawness, and fluidity. With a deep love for the art of DJing, Sterling is dedicated to continuously growing and evolving as an artist, all with a clear NY flair.

PJ: Can you tell our community a little bit about yourself? And Batekoo?
F: I founded BATEKOO in Salvador, as a socio-cultural movement with high potential for structural transformation. I helped to develope language, identity, visual, musical and conceptual identity, expand it to 7 Brazilian states. Today I live in São Paulo and I'm the creative director and brand content manager. I like to combine my work with BATEKOO with other professions such as dj, producer, art director and styling.

With a mix of Brazilian funk, hip hop, and many other Afro-diasporic rhythms, Salvador-born party collective BATEKOO are creating revolutionary, rebellious spaces for marginalised communities in Brazil. They stand tall and unafraid in the midst of a political atmosphere brimming with homophobia, one that constantly attempts to frighten young LGBTQ+ and black Brazilians into silence.
Founded in late 2014, BATEKOO quickly spread beyond the clubs of Bahia and the North East of Brazil, soon becoming icons of the São Paulo party scene. Their goal has been clear from inception – to unapologetically reclaim space and centre the voices of those marginalised, whose sound and culture have been exploited, looked down upon and exoticised for decades.
“We are proud to be able to show the world that Brazil is not only what the media is focused on,” they explain. Instead, BATEKOO are creating structural change one party at a time, tackling issues of inaccessibility and offering a space of not just representation but also of community, understanding, resistance, and celebration.

PJ: Where do you see this mix taking people?
F: BATEKOO is about dancing as you please and not caring about judgments, the idea of ​​our music is to make people express themselves through their bodies and identities.

PJ: What’s your favorite thing about New York been so far?
F: My favorite part about New York I think is the whole city and how it resembles Brazil for several reasons. The black and latin cultural scene that is so strong here. The black and marginal identities of the city, the amount of non-white people in general, the way people express themselves all seem like a movie, so really in love.

PJ: What's your favorite snack after the club?
F: Pizza would be very private, I like Caribbean food, but I would like it with a little less spice hahahaha

I want you to feel the depths of emotion, angst, celebration, frustration, and determination. A claim to power in a world that has been systematically built to never allow us (non-white people) to rise. A claim to blackness overall finally coming into the light. A claim to extreme female presence to remind us that through us we will achieve our freedoms. Reminders of our darkness (internally and as a whole), as well as our spiritual connection with magic and dimensions beyond this one. Dimensions some of us have a direct line to. An ode to our ancestors who continue to leave us roadmaps and clues. The presence of nature in the beginning and ending of the mix to remind us of what we are destroying, but also the control that we will never have over mother nature. Finding home in our souls & bodies. Finding home geographically. Finding our place in the societies and communities we share, but also tearing systems down. "

TSA: My favorite memory was definitely when I had @tomasadelreal perform at the spiral and we danced and drank all night long lol. It was a real special night for me.
