Our landmark 700th episode in partnership with Detroit’s Blueprint presents the first in a new three-part series exploring the untold history of Detroit techno from the perspective of the women who built it.

The history of Detroit techno is often recounted in waves. First there was the Belleville Three—Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May—closely followed by a second cohort of artists who further developed the sound in the '90s. Names like Carl Craig, Octave One, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills and Mike Banks are among those that have been codified in the official annals of techno history.

But there's another, lesser known story that is seldom told about the women who grew the scene right alongside them. Equally esteemed artists like DJ Minx (the founder of Women On Wax Recordings), K-Hand, DJ Cent, Stacey Hotwaxx Hale and more ran labels, collectives and DJ nights that aren't bestowed with the same credit as those from their male counterparts, and have consequently been lost in the chronicles of time. For the 700th episode of the RA Exchange, we counter correct this gender inequity with the first episode of a three-part series hosted and produced by the all-female Detroit collective and party series Blueprint. 

Alanna Greenlee, Janisa Nelson and Crystal Mioner embark on interviews that illuminate an alternative history of Detroit techno that unfurled alongside these better-documented techno waves, tracing the birth of a woman-led community that put mutual support at its heart and fought to earn respect from their male peers and the scene at large. Native to New York, musclecars is a DJ / Producer duo consisting of Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield. As musicians, they equally share an admiration for the artform. Their desire to blend genres and express their appreciation for music is focused around their community- the end goal is to bring people together. Through a regular stream of high quality mixes, they have begun to turn heads in underground circles.

In 2018 they launched ‘Coloring Lessons’, a party that was aimed to add value to their city’s nightlife culture. While the party and sound is not genre specific, it is heavily focused around house, disco, jazz, and soul, embracing the musical elements of their black and brown ancestors. The monthly party's intention is to bring New York City's dance music scene back to what it was during the golden era of NY nightlife. They aim to spread the music that has been influential to them, and share it with a younger generation of their peers

Honey Bun is a multidisciplinary afro-futurist artist and DJ whose work aims to reclaim the black past, affirm the black present, and demand the black future. Born in NYC, raised in Texas, and now based in Brooklyn, she aims to seamlessly blend her east coast roots with her southern upbringing. As a resident of The Lot Radio, Honey Bun hosts her monthly show, BUNTOPIA, captivating listeners with a distinctive mix designed to "sonically journey through the cosmos." The show also features guest DJs, each bringing their own interstellar interpretation to the theme. The sounds of BUNTOPIA, extend into a party night often hosted by intimate NYC clubs, Le Bain and Mood Ring. She is the co-founder of beloved party series, Soul Connection, along with DJ, Lovie. Together, they craft an immersive atmosphere filled with soulful house, R&B, funk, and disco music, bouncing between renowned Brooklyn clubs, Good Room and Nowadays. Honey Bun is also a regular at Mansions, a fusion of a natural wine bar and nightclub. Here, she orchestrates bi-monthly all-night sets where she effortlessly buzzes through genre, crafting 6-hour mixes that are uniquely her own.
