With the #21DaysofVGM now becoming the #7DaysofVGM, here's my first submission for the week! We set sail on our small boat, starting slow from the shore but quickly the warm sun beats down, the waves crash against the hull, and the birds glide above. But in the ocean, not all is calm... there are dangers to be found on the water, and if you're lucky to come through the other side you can call yourself a true sailor. Please enjoy Set Sail!

Day 01 - Exploring the Ocean

This is part of the #7DaysofVGM challenge! Day One's theme was exploring the ocean. I've always liked 7/8 because of how it gives a little bit of an off kilter feel with the beats grouped as 3+2+2. If you aren't familiar, part of the challenge is to post whatever you have, something>nothing and done>perfect. In this case its a something>nothing scenario and this was what I got out of my head. I was imagining this specifically as a bright, clear morning setting sail on the waves on the start of a new adventure. At the end I wasn't sure where to go with a melody but I got a bass line. Feedback welcome!

When imagining exploring the ocean in a game, my mind goes to something deep, dark, and blue. Very mysterious, infinite, and beautiful. In this composition I used warm, low-pitched bells to create the sense of exploring a world so open and massive yet so “closed in,” like when you feel water pressing against every inch of your body.

Day 1 of 7 Days of VGM, and I'm sticking to the ocean theme to experiment for all 7 days. Since this is going to an experiment with sound and melodies the whole way, I'm giving myself a 30 minutes to an hour for each composition. We'll, uh, see what happens.

#7DaysOfVGM Day 1 - Calm Winds

#21DaysofVGM recently became #7DaysofVGM, and is now monthly instead of quarterly! Each one will have a unique theme, but it's largely the same deal - come up with new music every day. I'll try to participate in as many of these as I can.

The theme this time is "Ocean Music", and the prompt for today was "Exploring the Ocean." I went for a more underwater/submarine sort of vibe, though I ended up losing a lot of time dialing in tone and struggling to play the 8-string guitar I recorded this with. It's a tricky instrument to play, so I'm planning on using it for the rest of the challenge to help myself get used to it. If I had more time I'd definitely work on the last section more - it's a bit underdeveloped.
