Water cycles around the Earth. It doesn't leave. This is a short piece of what they journey may sound like 😊 
Presented as part of theWay~theWater~theWalk  The Way of science, the Water as subject, the Way of research processes... and the radical action of art making and public participating.   The Pump’s Alternative Design Session includes an opening provocation, an online participatory collaboration/think tank, a very short documentary film, an easy body movement routine, and a collective proposition toward the final phase of a new work, theWay~theWater~theWalk.   Through this work and our session, members of The Pump open the way for conversations combining systems science with principles of potential thinking, narrative construction, and the South African philosophy of interconnectedness – Ubuntu: ‘I am because you are’. We look to advance sustainability science through a co-design model of participation and narrative. This process was used most recently to inform the sonic architecture and affective landscape for our work-in-progress showing of a large-scale participatory installation and performance created by some members of the Pump with Punctum Inc. Called theWay~theWater~theWalk, through participatory processes it simulates consumption and production causal relationships and brings to the fore perspectives on ‘liquidity’, issues of water scarcity, and cultural and environmental sustainability. Created in response to the 2019 Royal Commission into Australia's Murray Darling River Basin and many publications in the public realm, it reveal the complex and often conflicting water usages within the river basin.   The session includes the premier of a short film documenting theWay~theWater~theWalk and input from participants during our session will inform the next development stage of this new work.

"That time YouTube tried to radicalise me" is an EP composed from sampling the ever increasingly right wing videos served to me during a 2019 free-trial youtube premium subscription. The algorithm picked me up at zizek and via elon musk, richard dawkins, sam harris and jordan peterson, delivered me all the way to ben shapiro and flat earth conspiracies. The vocals in the songs themselves seem quite logical out of context but these voices and their thinking were a concerted effort by the youtube algorithm to prime me for extremism, god belief (dawkins to shapiro), leveraging exploitative business aspirations and more.

"The liquidisation of labour then, moves people around the globe as a liquid, dynamic and responsive asset in order to maximise market value. Examples of this could be the migration of workers to expend their labour at privately owned mines, in the construction of new cities, or to work in another branch of a transnational company. In these instances, the kinds of labour these workers perform become interchangeable, useful at many locations but specific in particular to none. Perhaps this relates to the cosmopolitan urbanisation of many parts of the world, in which these liquid, general forms of labour must also be supported by general, liquid forms of architecture, food and culture. Major cities in the UAE like Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Dubai – built and populated extraordinarily quickly with workers from all over the world - are typified by these features. These hubs require the liquidation of everything, from resources and labour to culture. What is the relationship of places like these with fresh water? How are these cities serviced by water-providers and how is it represented in these places?
