'Who is she?'
Aquenta’s sound is a genre-blending mix of syncopated beats, bubbly pop, sugary trap, jagged synths and other surprises thrown in for good measure. The Dominican-Australian always draws on her Afro-Caribbean heritage when crafting her sets, but then spices things up by adding her other favourite flavours. The result has been described perfectly by her bro as akin to a Warhead lolly: sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, intense and not for everyone 🤪😈
Like all her work across creative and legal spaces, she sees her DJing as a form of activism: radical space-making through occupation and sonic curation, aimed at expanding club culture. COME TASTE!!

Listening to Country: Exploring the value of acoustic ecology with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in prison.

The aim of ‘Listening to Country’ is to explore the value of acoustic ecology in promoting cultural connection, maintenance and wellbeing among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in prison. In early 2019, an interdisciplinary team of researchers worked with women in Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre (BWCC) to produce a 1-hour immersive audio work based on field recordings of natural environments (of country) for the purpose of stress relief and relaxation. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are overrepresented in Australian prisons. The majority are mothers, experiencing the trauma associated with separation from family, community and country. 

‘Listening to Country’ represents an innovative and creative approach to promoting cultural maintenance and wellbeing among mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties and grandmothers in prison. The research use principles and processes from acoustic ecology, Indigenous storywork, dadirri (deep active listening), and arts-led inquiry to explore notions of cultural connection and maintenance for the participants, and the effects of the project on their wellbeing.

This project responds to a direct request from a group of Aboriginal women at BWCC to create a culturally appropriate sound recording for the purpose of reducing stress and connecting to natural environments and to country. It has been built on a strong foundation of previous creative engagement and consultation with women incarcerated in Queensland. The project team consists of two Aboriginal and two non-Aboriginal researchers working in collaboration. Dr Vicki Saunders (Gunggari) is an emerging scholar who works using arts-led and poetic enquiry in the field of child protection and family wellbeing. Dr Bianca Beetson (Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi) is a visual artist and curator, and Director of the Contemporary Indigenous Art Program at Griffith University. Dr Sarah Woodland has been developing creative arts-based approaches to wellbeing in Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre (BWCC) for the past seven years, recently finding radio drama, audio recording and soundscape to be highly effective in engaging the women. Dr Leah Barclay is a sound artist whose work investigates the value of acoustic ecology as a socially engaged, accessible, interdisciplinary field that can inspire communities across the world to listen to the environment. This team is supported by an advisory group that includes members of the Brisbane Council of Elders, Dr Claire Walker, (Director of the Murri Dhagun cultural unit of Queensland Corrective Services) and criminology expert Professor Andrew Day from James Cook University.

The pilot project in BWCC has enabled the researchers to develop and hone this approach to wellbeing among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in prison. It is anticipated that the ‘Listening to Country’ model might be transferable into a number of different wellbeing contexts, including with at-risk youth, Elders/seniors in care or off-country, women transitioning from prison to the community and more. The pilot will inform further development of the approach with additional groups in the community, with capacity development and knowledge translation activities occurring in Mitchell, Sunshine Coast and Cherbourg, Queensland to explore these possibilities in 2019.

This soundscape is a short excerpt from the 1-hr immersive audio work produced with the women during the pilot phase in prison in early 2019.

Hailing from Merseyside in the UK, Forest Swords has collaborated with Massive Attack, remixed Björk, was a recent curator in the DJ-Kicks compilation series, has explored multidisciplinary work in the form of Shrine, a contemporary dance piece, and earlier this year he scored 'Ghosts of Sugar Land', a film that won Best Documentary Short at Sundance Film Festival.

An exclusive soundtrack by Glasgow based artist Mark Vernon. His clever and striking work often exists on the fringes of sound art, experimental music and broadcasting - centring around the re-appropriation of found recordings, environmental sound and obsolete media. He is an avid collector of domestic tape recordings; audio letters, dictated notes, home sing-alongs, answer-phone messages and other lost voices that he incorporates into his compositions. A keen advocate of radio as an art form, he co-runs Glasgow art radio station, Radiophrenia. His solo music projects have been published through labels including Kye, Flaming Pines, Misanthropic Agenda, Entr’acte, and 3Leaves.

'Elsewhere is a negative mirror' is based around an incredibly intriguing and somewhat menacing voice recording from a Dictaphone micro-cassette bought at a car boot sale. It continues a series of works that marry found recordings from the past with contemporary field recordings of the same location to accrue sedimentary layers of time and blur chronologies.

"On one side, the tape documents the dissolution of a relationship and the aftermath of a separation in a series of text message exchanges read aloud into the Dictaphone for some purpose unknown. Equally puzzling, on the reverse side of the tape the same voice lists a mundane catalogue of company vans and their contact details observed whilst driving down the motorway." - Mark Vernon

An exclusive soundtrack by Utility, a collaborative project of Australian sound artists Austin Buckett and Thomas Smith. Utility explore the tension between the real and the artificial by focusing on the preset nature of contemporary music and media production. They work across multiple forms in both music and visual art contexts by using and contextualising common musical tropes and other production techniques. 

Utility produce commissions and sound design for visual artists and choreographers, release electronic music through independent labels, produce music for rap and rnb vocalists, and perform/exhibit in visual art contexts. They just released this mixtape.

"That time YouTube tried to radicalise me" is an EP composed from sampling the ever increasingly right wing videos served to me during a 2019 free-trial youtube premium subscription. The algorithm picked me up at zizek and via elon musk, richard dawkins, sam harris and jordan peterson, delivered me all the way to ben shapiro and flat earth conspiracies. The vocals in the songs themselves seem quite logical out of context but these voices and their thinking were a concerted effort by the youtube algorithm to prime me for extremism, god belief (dawkins to shapiro), leveraging exploitative business aspirations and more.
