A little flock of Whooper Swans, arrived a few days ago, one hour after sunset at Rengaskari Reef one mile from our home shore.  The sea is frozen a long way out, but by the shallow waters of the reef there's a small piece of free water.  The picture is by sunset as I leaved the mics on the reef.

The Music Of Sound - 2. Street Recordings (Part 1)

The waiting is finally over and now the countdown is on in earnest ahead of Mayo's Round 1 qualifier clash with Monaghan on Saturday. To preview this do-or-die knockout meeting with the Farney County, in this episode of the Mayo News Football Podcast Rob Murphy is joined by Colm Boyle and Kevin McStay.

They start by looking back at the weekend's provincial final action, focusing on the standard of football served up in the four provincials deciders, in particular in Ulster where Kevin was on co-commentary duties with RTE. 

The focus then switches to MacHale Park this coming Saturday, as Mayo return to action following their six-week lay-off since the Galway game. The lads discuss dealing with injuries, the mindset within the group after the loss to Galway, with Colm focusing on what he regards as the surprisingly downbeat mood in the county in that game's aftermath. Monaghan's likely approach on Saturday is considered, with a focus on how Mayo will deal with kickouts and how the team's attacking play could be improved the next day.

The Championship shifts pace this coming weekend as the All-Ireland quarter-finals are set to be contested. On Sunday, at what's expected to be close to a full attendance at Croke Park, Mayo face the toughest of assignments as they take on Sam Maguire favourites Kerry, the team that beat them so comprehensively in this year's National League decider in early April.

To preview Sunday's big match, Rob Murphy is joined on the podcast by RTÉ's Kevin McStay and Tony Leen of the Irish Examiner. They talk about likely starting line-ups, defensive match-ups and what has to happen for Mayo to have a chance against a Kerry team that appears to be far more formidable than last year but about whom key questions still remain unanswered.

E532 | What can family and individual studio photographs tell us about social life in the early Republic of Turkey? In this episode, Özge Calafato highlights the negotiations between the Kemalist state, the photographers, and the people being photographed that led to classed and gendered representation of modern Turkish citizens in vernacular photography. Calafato analyzes not only the image, but also the context of production and the inscriptions written behind photographs. Looking at photos of subjects as ranging from beauty queens and feminist activists to bank employees and soldiers, she considers the production and circulation of photos not only in urban studios and within families but also in rural areas and within friendship groups.

Özge Calafato is Lecturer in Literary and Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests lie at the intersection of photography, archives, memory and cultural identity. She is the author of "Making the Modern Turkish Citizen: Vernacular Photography in the Early Republican Era" (I.B. Tauris, 2022).

Zeinab Azarbadegan is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focuses on the intersection of inter-imperial relations and history of science, technology, and medicine, in nineteenth century Ottoman Iraq
