Ian Holt, Head of Developer Outreach at Ordnance Survey, explained and demonstrated what difference the addition of linked data sets has made to the organisation’s open map data.

Using examples and case studies, he showed what linked data makes possible for publishers and app developers, and what it might mean for those of us who use maps every day.

Friday lunchtime lecture: Changing tracks with HS2 open data



One thing we won’t be short of in the future is data – we’ll have detailed analytics about how we live and the world around us. But what about the past? Is it possible to pull together data about the history of our cities and gain some insight into the past?

In this lecture, Leigh Dodds introduced a project from Bath: Hacked, that is using historical maps and cultural heritage open data to let people begin exploring 400 years of Bath’s history.

Friday lunchtime lecture: Time travelling with open data

The idea for this mix came to me a couple of years ago when I watched the documentaries 'Everything is a Remix' and 'RIP a Remix Manifesto', which I can both really recommend. Sampling has been one of the main drivers behind the origination of new music genres such as hip-hop, house and techno in the 80's and 90's when samplers came to the market. I've always found it a lot of fun to spot samples from old songs in today's music. What I wanted to create with this project is something which you might pretentiously call: 'The Ultimate Mashup'. Unlike regular mixes I wanted to use a huge amount of short samples, mashups, loops, acapellas and parts from hundreds of different songs to create something totally new. 

In 1969, the most sampled drumbeat in the world, better known as the 'Amen Break' (from The Winstons - Amen Brother) was recorded. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, search for it on youtube, I bet you'll recognize it immediately. An astonishing amount of hip-hop artists used this sample in their tracks in the late 80's. In the early 90's, the jungle genre was entirely build around reconstructing the amen break sample. There are a lot more comparable samples and drum loops that have influenced our musical history in a profound way. James Brown's Funky Drummer, The Honey Drippers - Impeach the President and Lyn Collins - Think -, just to name a few. I made use of a lot of these famous samples. In total, you'll hear 195 different songs in 72 minutes in this mix.

In the video, Taleb talks about the vulnerability of things and how we are so dependent on technology, that we become fragile and at the same time the planet started to get smaller because of the internet.

He discussed how big companies destroy themselves, because of their size, operation and not adapting fast enough. Part of the blame he says is because we are human and we build things that eventually break. When I hear that companies destroy themselves I ask myself,  why do they don't adapt fast enough if the have a lot of resources?, the hotel industry didn’t create AirBnB, or why the Taxi Industry didn't create Uber or Blockbuster developed Netflix, there are more examples like that. 

There is an economic concept called Creative Destruction that was popularized by Joseph Schumpeter here is an extract from a Wikipedia page I will leave the link below. “In Schumpeter's vision of capitalism, innovative entry by entrepreneurs was the disruptive force that sustained economic growth, even as it destroyed the value of established companies and laborers that enjoyed some degree of monopoly power derived from previous technological, organizational, regulatory, and economic paradigms.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_destruction

I agree when he mentions that universities and political institutions are falling behind and as time passes they are less fit to understand what’s happening in the world, the world and information is moving faster than before and people are adapting new ways to interact, share, learn and sell stuff. 

An example is that we are still voting for a President like if it were 1917 and not 2017 when we can use technology to do more efficient tasks and transparency. My brother has become a Vegetarian Chef, Filmmaker, 3D Animator, Music Producer, Meditation Guide, all that without a college degree, and he is good at it, learning all of that from the internet, time and discipline. Some of us learn better by finding alternative methods on the internet rather than the methods used in the rigid school system. What I got from this talk that relates to software development has to do with what we read in the book of Pragmatic Programmer and what we saw in some of the classes with Isaac where they give us tips on not to build big modules with a lots of code, split them up, don't letting them get too big, don’t build modules that depend on others and have the habit of testing.

Taleb shared a phrase “Build a system in which people can make all the mistakes they want without endangering others” that comment was meant for economic, governmental and financial point of view but that can apply to coding as well, build systems that are less vulnerable.
