 VSILE (or “now in force”, in Russian) is a project from Pasha Shutov (a former member of D-Pulse since its inception and, to some point in the past, the man responsible for all things guitar – as well as their (shall we say) exuberant high spirits) and Moscow Conservatory graduate Grigory Saltykov – vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and, apparently, an only properly educated musician among us.

This release started life during sound engineering on VSILE tracks at the Theomatic-label studio – at which point it became clear that finishing work on any one track was just leading to an idea for an additional version of it. These tracks are now coming to light on an independent release, with a clear slant towards the instrumental …

VSILE’s music is a mix of classy electronica and that increasingly rare commodity these days – good, honest romanticism – lacking, as it does, any hint of schmaltz or naivety.

When we heard Pompeya for the first time and were told they were from Moscow, we were like: - What!? Are you kidding? This is probably the first Russian band singing in English with such a classy Brit touch and male vocal being very strong and sophisticated at the same time. They jestingly describe their style as “melodramatic popular song” and “Cheenese” is indeed a very dramatic piece with simple yet powerful composition and lyrics that really make BIG sense. The original is very well supported by a bunch of remixes each of which is unique on its own. An-2 & Samos come with a warm, relaxed and funky instrumental version which is followed by a blockbuster mix from Moscow disquo maestro Leonid Lipelis (an entirely perfect dance version of the original that could ever exist) and finally, for those few sirs and mesdames who are not yet aesthetically satisfied and who still find themselves seated while others jump and shout, here come D-Pulse with their ‘Paranoid’ mix that gathers the thunderclouds to the full darkness and - at the end - lets the revival sunbeams break through.

A year after the initial digital release here's the long awaited nugget for all the vinyl lovers: D-Pulse 'Velocity Of Love' with the new richer sound and the additional vinyl-only remixes. After a lot has been said about the original track and Hot Toddy's mix (which was recently licensed for the Ministry Of Sound's 'Late Night Sessions' compilation) these two new remixes resting on the side B are definitely worth to be mentioned. Mario Basanov (hailing from Lithuania) really surprised us all with his musical thinking and a fresh point of view on the original track and also - by finishing such a quality mix in only 3 (!) days. The second mix that finishes off the EP was done by the new name from Izhevsk - Andrew Starodumov aka Eclectic Sound (previously featured on our <a href="http://theomatic.com/theomcd01.html" target="_blank">'Obscured By The Machines'</a> compilation). His mix is a nice background for coastal chilling under the soft evening sunbeams. Enjoy.

Originally released on ‘Wide Open EP’ in 2007, The Gift receives a long-due remix treatment by the Theomatic clique. A spaced-out ‘Celestial Lullaby’ mix (seasoned with the delightful guitar verses by Tony K. of D-Pulse) is followed by a dancefloor-friendly version from Amberflame, culminating with ‘Mediterranean’ mix – the self-explanatory rendition by D-Pulse – a top-notch, two-piece excursion into the sound of contemporary balearica. The original re-mastered version is, of course, present and sounds as fresh and deep as back in the day.

Theomatic continues revisiting its back catalogue’s finest moments with a series of remixes from the label fellows. This time, the spotlight is being turned on An-2’s summertime anthem ‘Lazy Sun’ originally released in 2007. The set opens with a gorgeous, laidback interpretation by Amberflame and St.Petersburg’s very own up and coming harpist Olga Maximova (Oma) whose regular rooftop performances over the past few years have become a trademark soundtrack for St.Pete’s long “white” summer nights. It is followed by a cover version by D-Pulse recorded live at one of the band’s performances back in 2008 at the once-hip now-defunct legendary “Bubble Bar” in St Petersburg. We highly recommended it as a decent musical background for a luxury speedboat ride. The Acos Coolkas version sets out slowly with the rhodes keys progressing into a chilled and well-balanced house jam built over a slightly altered original bassline. ‘Spoiled Youth’ mix is a fine raw boogie work reminiscent of the good old pops-n-loops disco-house days. Rounding things up the original version still sounding fresh and relevant.

"Duality" E.P. is all about tenderness vs. desire, body vs. soul. Two stories of equal depth that delve into two different shades of love, the opposing vectors of human relationships...
About a year ago (end of 2014), guys from Red Bull Music Academy visited Izhevsk (long been claimed as the capital of electronic music in Russia) to do a review on the local music scene. Ironically, the only two projects they managed to track down were Cetranger and Eclectic Sound. This E.P. quite literally comes courtesy of the last two survivors of the city's once burgeoning music community, however these two survivors do rock seriously in their attempts to explore the heights and depths of human nature. Even sonically, you can easily use track A to evaluate the "detailness" of your tweeters, and track B to test drive your subs.

It has been a while since the last new material from Acos Coolkas, the Siberia-born-Moscow-based duo comprised of Konstantin Atomas and Vasiliy Basalaev, but the wait has been well worth it. Proving the concept that quality prevails quantity, the guys deliver two absolutely gorgeous cuts that share the similar cosmic vibe of their previous output with production level taken one step higher (not least thanks to Theomatic technical team). Throbbing beat and low-end synth line on the title track evolve gradually into a epic space journey with that peculiar 80’s-style Italo dreamwave feel. The bassline of the second track will surely remind something to those who know their way around 70’s disco classics.

After two years An-2 is breaking the silence with his new EP demonstrating a fully refreshed sonic palette he's been in the search of. Built over a quirky synth bass line, "Beside me" is filled with all the right melodic elements that walk a thin line between sounding baroque yet minimalistic at the same time. "Chronos", named after the Greek god of time, rolls on like the second hand on a clock face - surely fit for an early night dance floor it will never become an anachronism in your record collection. And finally, "Dare" which combines all the usual suspects: a funky bass guitar, dreamy arpeggios and ethereal pads - is set to please any discerning crowd.

An-2 and Samos have turned the clock back to finish off a couple of sessions they’d recorded together years back. Maxim Samos is our keen friend and sophisticated guitar player from Minsk, Belarus that we know for years. His first appearance on Theomatic was back in 2008 with space-rock tune “Alpha Storm”, which received lots of positive feedback and found its way to the Prins Thomas – Live At Robert Johnson compilation. As well as guitars, Maxim can play almost any string instrument and, on one of his erstwhile trips to Istanbul, he dropped by a music store, picked up a Saz and immediately set it alight, blowing away the entire staff. After scoring a big discount, he came out, clutching it in his hands. An-2 commented on Samos' playing on the Saz during one of his first visits to Minsk, and immediately suggested cutting a track together – something that took 10 years, but the wait’s been worth it. What we’ve got is surreal halal-acid-folk-disco affair, perfect for whirling dervishes or dancing the dhikr. The story’s continued on the B-side, where we’re treated to a tale of trips in a GTI, before finishing with a Nordic saga about cold fronts coming at us from behind the Polar Circle.

As hot as ever the new EP from our Siberian disco friends is finally landing into Theomatic's catalogue. The title track "Solar wind" is a Rhodes driven hands-in-the-air early night anthem: simple yet powerful, just the way we like it! The flipside features an offbeat cosmic number "Planetarium" which sounds like a perfect soundtrack for some colourful sci-fi cartoon about the early years of space exploration, with all those rockets, flying saucers, stars and comets with long tails. The bonus track (available as a digital download only) is named after the Soviet Moon exploration robot vehicle Lunokhod 2 ('moon walker' in Russian) which was sent to the Moon in 1973. Being rather minimalistic at the begining it slowly evolves and reaches its apogee closer to the end with calm and beautiful melody which leaves the listener in a peaceful mood.

The tracks and songs always have a uniquely Theoatic sound whether by Acos or AN-2 and it is one of my favourites. 
The Ep is reminds me in a way of the X-Ray and Magnet Sounds recordings of Joe T and Ray Castoldi - they have a similarly cosmic electronic warmth which you find only rarely.
The wonderful thing about Acos new EP is that there are three distinct moods, each complimenting the others beautifully: moody, left-fiield and dancfloor.. All 10 out of 10. Full support.

“Crosstalk” is a collaborative effort between Theomatic’s artists – a sort of a peer reinterpretation of each other’s works. First on the A-side is Acos Coolkas’ “Skyline”, from their first-ever single on Theomatic, released in 2005, receiving a sonic facelift from An-2. This is followed by An-2’s remix of D-Pulse’s first track from their latest full-length album, “Gratitude”, which first appeared as a mystery track on An-2’s 2018 SoundCloud mix, now seeing the light of the day by popular demand, and is not to be missed. On the flipside D-Pulse deliver a two-part remix of An-2’s “The Gift” – previously only available digitally. These two stunning pieces, filled with ethereal soundscapes, will delight any discerning Balearic-sound connoisseur. Rounding things off is Acos Coolkas’ remix of An-2’s seminal “Lazy Sun”.

7he Myriads debut on Theomatic with the stellar 'Betelgeuse EP'. It is a bow to the era of all-round enthusiasm for space exploration and travelling to far off galaxies that swept across Russian (then Soviet) youth in the late 70's-early 80's. Highly influenced by the sound of  the likes of Didier Marouani's Space and Soviet space-rock legend Zodiac (which sold 20 million copies of their albums in the USSR and lately found way to Environ's "Unclassics" compilation), all four tracks on the EP are well charged with nostalgic analogue synth lines, powerful guitar riffs and dynamic live drums. If someone told  us this was some unreleased stuff produced back in 1980, we would certainly believe...

‘Pulse Code EP’ by Amberflame – Andrei Zakharov’s (aka An-2) side project aimed at finding the right balance between organic yet experimental sound – is a selection of top-notch electronica with the flair of old-school disco and everything inbetween. The crafty and meticulous use of a variety of custom analogue hardware give way to keeping an open mind with production and sound design, which varies greatly, but at the same time, shares a coherent quality throughout the EP.

The opening track "Hope" sets the mood with its melancholic airy strings and pulsating arpeggios developing effortlessly until the groovy guitar bass kicks in lighting things up and giving the mix a completely new perspective.

Taking a more experimental edge ‘Pulse Code’ is a PCM-inspired leftfield electronica piece which goes a new direction with its solid synthwork and fluent drum programming.

The title of the closing cut ‘Dreamscape’ speaks for itself: it is a meditative electro-focused affair where gliding synth basslines meet ebb-and-flowing lush atmospheric soundscapes.

An-2 returns with a new album 7 years after the previous one, demonstrating the evolution of his sound, rich stylistic diversity and commitment to the perception of the surrounding reality, which can most accurately be described as magical realism.

The album, in contrast to the previous two ("On Air" and "Sunset Stories"), which were created outside the city, was composed in the new studio of Theomatic Records in a quiet part of the center of St. Petersburg and is saturated with pure shades from the calm part of the mood palette of this city.

The big difficulty with the process of bringing together the diverse material of the album was that almost all the tracks were written using different approaches and instruments, some were created on the go using an ipad and headphones. This became possible only due to the forced pause of the first half of 2020, during which many external processes of the surrounding life were put on hold, which freed up energy for rethinking the experience accumulated in recent years.
