MUBI and NTS affiliate @florencesa takes the reins for our latest Concept In Practice mix!

Between MUBI's ‘Notebook Soundtrack’ mixes and ‘Sounds on Screen’, an ongoing series for NTS, the Berlin-based curator is typically found paying homage and drawing attention to some of finest movie soundtracks around. Here though, Florence’s mix serves as a companion piece to a recent film project; a time capsule of sorts reflecting on that chapter.

“I see this as a mixtape accompaniment put together whilst shooting a film earlier this summer. The film, a diary piece now in the edit, is surrounding my experimentation with the 2 cup manifestation method, or something like that lol… A mix of some of the tunes and words that soundtracked my world during the production and shooting process. A sonic time capsule of sorts, wrapped up with thoughtz, feelz n fun. Featuring classiques, music from heroes, friends and filmic snipetZ of a journey from start 2 finish.” – florence

Concept In Practice: florence's 'as it comes' Mix

@danielnessmusic bares his soul on new EP ‘Hell Is A Room’. Melding gossamer folkbient and trance euphoria with trace echoes of jungle and garage, the French-Icelandic artist’s latest effort toes a line between optimism and melancholy. 

Representing a departure from more club-focused output, all in favour of placing vocals front and centre, it seems fitting that he’d contribute to our Concept In Practice series with a mix centred around traditional songwriting.

“This mix is an amalgamation of two worlds I hold dearly. It combines traditional songwriting with a range of electronic soundscapes and compositions taking inspiration from ambient, shoegaze, trance and club music. At its core, 'Writers Guild' is a praise to songwriting, moulding songs I grew up on such as Tom Waits, Mugison or Gillian Welch with music from the present. 

Folk music however is at the centre of this mix as it's a beautifully stripped back yet intricate and very communicative world which is an important part of my musical upbringing and has always impacted my own practice. It's vulnerable, melodic, blunt and versatile in its form and an ever-expanding realm that I think shares many similarities to the more-electronic tracks featured. 

'Writers Guild' is a little exploratory trip into how these worlds coexist in my head and an attempt at re-contextualising the timeless efficiency of folk music through the use of resampling, pitching and effects.” – Daniel Ness

Concept In Practice: Daniel Ness' 'Writers Guild' Mix

Recent @tobago-tracks debutant @canhota leans into nocturnal, dreamlike sensibilities for our Concept In Practice series.

An extension of her TT debut, the Brooklyn-based artist has recorded a mix evocative of nighttime scenes. Like ‘Night Glow’, where smudged r&b nocturnes gave the impression of sleepwalking through an unconscious mind, Swaya’s ‘Cycles of the Night’ mix recalls the blur of city and streetlights from a night bus’ top deck.

“Having spent the last 3 years working in recording studios, night clubs and DJing, I've been reflecting on what it means/how it feels to live a largely nocturnal life. I wanted to bring together music that relates to life at night whether through feeling or sonic and lyrical content to hone in on those experiences. Walking outside at night, dancing deep in the rave or being up late with a lover–these are some of the moments I was thinking of when putting this mix together.” – Swaya

The British-Venezuelan artist heralds a sophomore release with a contribution to our Concept In Practice series. Where both 2020’s ‘Molto Crudo’ EP and the latest effort, ‘Miasma Jester’, consolidate avant-hardcore tendencies with dirgey electronics and dembow flourishes, his 'On the Verge of a Crisis' mix treads a gentler path.

Concept In Practice: Lizzitsky's 'On the Verge of a Crisis' Ambient Mix

@laila-sakini comin' thru with a beautifully meditative mix ahead of performing at Sweden's Intonal Festival.

Sakini’s music is quietly captivating; textured and bewitching, with a pervading sense of plaintive serenity. Each release draws from the same sensuous palette while being a world unto itself. Intimately beautiful and always providing room for personal interpretation.

As expected, the mix goes some distance to emulate those enigmatic, daydream qualities. 

“Performance, life, lights is a mix of warped regal ideas, drama and DIY, hierarchy and performance, context and setting.

The title of Miki Yui’s seventh solo album “Aperio!” is derived from the latin origin of April, "aperire" meaning “to open” or “to reveal”. Hinting at the way her music unveils another reality which is hidden beneath the surface. The title also reflects the aperiodic character of the music, its irregularity. Like a magic word to reveal the mysterious cosmos, each song opens up another intimate world of wonders.

„All my work emerges from my physical experience, the inspiration often comes much later though, after the experience is digested and almost forgotten, then it crystallises and becomes a source for my music.“

It is indeed no accident that the first track of „Aperio!“ is entitled
„Listening (oneness)“: it vibrates for ten full minutes with and within us. It reflects the art of Miki Yui coming into existence. The Düsseldorf based Japanese artist approaches the world around her from a sensual perspective rather than in an analytic-logical way, still both paradigms of art production manifest their influence on the process.
Miki Yui says: „In my music, I play the game of turning the abstract into concrete and vice versa.“

This is obvious in all of the compositions on „Aperio!“. Her music combines otherworldly and dream world experiences, creating environments of multiple atmospheres, both warm and inviting but at times irritatingly cold and airless. They stimulate all kinds of feelings in us: astonishment, sadness, yearning, wondering, and hope.
For her it does not matter where the elements of her cobweb originate: from field recordings to abstract and artificial creations to electroacoustic sounds. She remarks, “revealing the source would only limit the imagination of the listeners. My sounds exist to trigger their own imagination“

Miki Yui is born in Tokyo, based in Düsseldorf. Crossing the boundary of music and fine art, she is known for her unique minimalistic and organic approach towards music since 1999 exploring the grey zone of our perception and imagination.
Since 2008, parallel to her own work, she is in charge of the Klaus Dinger Archive, who was her partner.

“When performing with a limited set of resources, through choices in materials to work with and the constraints of being nomadic, there can be a tendency to repeat actions and scenes that 'work', even when improvising and having to respond to each new situation in a unique way.”

One characteristic aspect of the touring experience that is not discussed often enough is the dilemma of repetition. Not repetition as a mechanism of the work itself, but as a tedious consequence of being obligated to perform night after night in quick succession. Generating a completely unique performance for each stop, even with the assistance of improvisation,  is a laborious undertaking that consumes too much time and sanity, while adhering to a rigid set of rules leaves one open to both burnout and diminishing returns. Is there a way to split the difference so that both performer and audience are always engaged to the highest standard?

“I set these constraints on myself. The need to produce something (at least a little) different in each event of a tour was fierce, especially when traveling with other musicians.”

Explicitly within the title itself of his latest CD, Forced To Repeat Myself, UK sound artist and composer Simon Whetham tackles these questions with both a sly wit and sincere inquisitiveness. The tracks, all collected from recordings documenting a 2018 tour, utilize analogous source material and means of execution.  Whetham paid particular attention to the contour and character of each venue when deciding how to best put the pieces together, offering a customization that subverts pure deja vu for a sharp observance of the unfamiliar.

“In each situation objects and materials unique to the space were incorporated into the performance setup and structure, generating sounds or resonating with them. And yet I could hear similar scenes, movements, even spaces. This repetition determined the dynamic of the composition, working with it and against it.”

By the very nature of their disseminating sparseness, the tracks of Forced To Repeat Myself demand from the listener an attentiveness fixed on nuance and variation. The amplified cracks and static of ethereal currents and anonymous electronics infer the works of others who’ve made it their mission to attune our attention toward sounds outside our natural perception, including Christina Kubisch’s electrical walks, Toshimaru Nakamura’s no-input mixer excursions, and Jason Zeh’s experiments with blank tapes and the mechanizations of his cassette players. Whetham’s shaping of the album’s source material to highlight certain exclusivities of each live performance emphasizes how the inherent dynamics of time and chance guide his self-imposed constraints into pathbreaking spectrums. 

“The title references a phrase many of us will have heard in our formative years, ’Why do you force me to repeat myself?’ I have no answer to this question. I never forced anyone to do anything. But with this work, I did.”

One inherent paradox of Forced To Repeat Myself is that each listen naturally manifests a distinct, individual experience. The way sounds are received and processed in one instance to the next each forget their own entryway into transcribing meaning from this abstraction. And Whetham is keenly aware of this as the sounds of Forced To Repeat Myself find consistent, unique ways to perpetuate themselves, ensuring any repetition to be delicately understated.

Curator and self made artist (music & graphic design), Sacha Mambo runs Macadam Mambo since it was created as a collective in 2008 and became later a label in 2012. DJ and digger for over two decades, his musical culture taps into a wide spectrum of influences, Sacha is one of those special selectors that manages to find the links between completely disparate styles of music and weave them together to create life changing moments and rich narratives, playing everything from Dub to New Beat, Early Rave to Cosmic Afro, post-Punk, Krautrock, Hip-hop or weird electronic sounds… his knowledge of rare gems and infectious oddball obscurities is second to none. But all of this is boring, Sacha is happy when you like and support the choices of Macadam Mambo in terms of music and releases, and the satisfaction that is to see a lot of young and less young people influenced by his work is the greatest reward to him.
