As we enter the midsummer-solstice season, I wanted to share this recording from a glorious sunny morning last year, now archived on Deep Mind Music ☀️

This is the set I played 8-10AM on Sunday at @comebyefestival in Wales for @umbilicalchords, in their cosy fuchsia~draped ambient dome.

Playing ambient in the early hours of a festival is always really special for me, as everyone’s minds are open and unwound, the gentle caress of nature is all around, and it feels the best backdrop for swirling into imaginal worlds 🌿

Hope you enjoy this wistful meander through tall breezy grasses, golden sunshine, and drifting clouds ~ a mix for daydreaming, nature-wandering, tea-drinking, sunbathing 🧡🌞🌾

The third offering in our mix series is a live recording of Priori and Cousin's dj set at Sustain Release 2024. Recorded on the last morning between 6am and 1pm on what was meant to be an ambient stage, it featured everything a 3 day festival closing set should. Eclectic picks, strange and emotional sounds, dubious transitions and a few feigned endings. Massive thanks to all the dancers, the Sustain staff (Aurora, Ash and everybody else who put their blood, sweat and tears into this), the music makers, the birds, the stars.

The next Deep Mind Music comes from one of my dearest friends, and greatest inspirations - hems

hems and I have a special connection, we both love to adventure through musical lands strange and beguiling, evocative and unusual, and have spent many hours together digging through obscure backcatalogs or making our own noises experimenting with hems’ many synthesisers in his studio in London 🧡

hems plays music like no one else I know, he has a magic touch and deep sensitivity for representing all shades of human existence. From the sublime to the transcendent, the unsettling to the hilarious, hems’ sets takes listeners to the beyond and then further still.

I first invited hems to make a mix many years ago, so I am very happy to finally welcome an entry from him. This recording is the first 2.5 hours of an all-night 8 hour set hems played at an intimate private gathering in Mexico City in March of this year.

In this recording hems coaxes us to drift inwards, to enter into an unusual landscape, to open up to all the elements of sound, contrasting pre-Hispanic music with vintage synthesizer tracks and much more.  

Listening to hems’ sets over the years has expanded my mind towards new possibilities, his selections and genius touch for programming evoking many deep epiphanies and insights. This mix is brimming with vitality and life, I hope you enjoy this kaleidoscopic voyage into the mystical 🌿 ~

Alongside DJing, hems produces very deep and intricate experimental electronic music I highly recommend checking out, often utilitising spatial audio systems or even playing gongs live, and he also runs the amazing Titrate records with @o-utlier, as well as his own mix series @hardcore-chillout with @EightFoldWay

A sound artist from Kanagawa, Japan, Saskia deeply connects space and emotion through music. Since releasing her debut EP on Detroit Underground in 2017, she has been active in live performances, installation art, and DJing. After moving to Bristol, UK, in 2022 to deepen her exploration of sound, she returned to Japan in 2024. Her latest LP, es, released the same year, is an experimental collection blending ambient and techno. Rooted in the concept of “Sound to _____ this magnificent cell,” her sonic works constantly invite listeners on new journeys.

ED051, Second Contact’s DJ set, is inspired by the ethos of Fight Club and the idea of embracing personal liberation through self-destruction and chaos.    Influenced by both the film’s structure and tempo, the mix is framed by symmetry and the concept of bookending in filmmaking; a structural technique where the beginning and ending scenes reflect one another. The set starts strangely with a mundane sense of repetition and polished emptiness gradually evolving into unrestrained intensity before retreating back into itself.

Benedikt Frey - Troubled Funk MixX #5

There are no two ways about it: Sydney native @leojamessounds (AKA Leo Thomson) has helped to shape the landscape of Australian electronic music in the 21st Century. Formerly one half of modular duo Canyons, he released music on labels like Modular Recordings and DFA Records alongside co-conspirator Ryan Grieve, and together they also ran the Hole In The Sky imprint. Active until 2011, the label served as a platform for some of Australia's finest emerging talent; from Jacques Renault to Bell Towers, even releasing some early Tame Impala material along the way. Now stepping out on his own, 2015 saw his first solo outing as Leo christened his own Body Language label with two cuts of EBM-infected techno.

With the roots of Australian electronic music steeped in a tradition of noise, industrial and EBM,  @neubauwien seems the perfect destination for his new material. Aiming to explore "brutalism in music," the Viennese label Neubau are set to welcome Leo into the fold with a brand new EP, so in turn we asked the man himself if he would like to contribute to our podcast series. He duly obliged, delivering an hour-long blend that borders on brooding, atmospheric and at times, even plain eerie. Immersive as they're likely to come, ethereal, dubby textures become transportive and brain-cleansing, like the slow ascent to some sort of higher plain.

The 'What Happened To You EP' is out November 7th on Neubau.
