Greg Kmiec’s Xenon pinball machine was released in 1980 and marked a significant milestone in pinball technology and design. The expansion of microchip technology would provide new opportunities for sound designer and synth pioneer Suzanne Ciani, allowing for basic oscillator control and a wider scope for sampling capacity which could facilitate the higher frequencies of a female human voice and entirely reshape the concept of the machine in the process. By using state of the art Synclavier synthesiser technology and an invaluable experience in film scoring and record production Suzanne would devise a complete minimal music score for the machine, then dissect the piece into separate fragments that would be triggered throughout the game play adding an extra creative dimension in player inter-activity (potentially turning the participant into their own musical arranger). By incorporating her own infamous voice box (which had been the focus of a seminal David Letterman Show feature) Suzanne’s combination of a harmoniser and a vocoder also provided the first-ever female identity to a pinball machine which in conjunction with the games ergonomic design and Paul Faris’ figurative graphics (echoing the aesthetic of Rene Laloux and Roland Topor’s La Planète Sauvage) Xenon was able to add a degree of subconscious sensuality to its performance, a feature previously unchartered in arcade development.

This disc presents the full extent of Suzanne Ciani’s groundbreaking musical effects for Xenon, in their isolated form, for the first time ever heard outside of the confines of the machine which recently earned the composer her own induction to the Pinball Expo Hall Of Fame.

She runs her hand through the foliage that follows along the trail - desire paths projected from her future self, divining the way back to the tribe. As light makes its way through the tall trees in abstract patterns, she feels her anxieties evaporating like fine mist from the waters ahead… inner peace amongst the surrounding chaos as the shadows absorb her ego. Her heart rumbles with profound rhythm, like a centrifuge of the soul.

Tunisian producer Azu Tiwaline’s track ‘Itrik’ is an undertaking of hypnotism that taps in to ancestral roots. An exploration of the contrast between light and dark, the song melds traditional North African-sentimentalities and Berber music with more contemporary electronic influences. Her focused approach to production sits glittering synths atop an undercurrent of ritualistic groove that’s enough to make anybody go native.

After the first taster single in February, and before another in April, comes five avant-garde tracks from Saharan artist Azu Tiwaline entitled ‘Draw Me A Silence Part I.’ Azu Tiwaline is a new name for a new spirit: one of a producer inspired by the need to explore her origins, rooted in the Tunisian Sahara. Her fresh sound is a mix of the organic and the raw, vibrations from the great spaces of the African desert where entrancing music resonates and ecstatic rituals are commonplace.  Her first album, Draw Me A Silence, unites these parts of her identity with Berber music, dub culture and techno hypnosis as Azu Tiwaline invites us to refocus on our senses and our nature. Azu knows how to use contrasts between light and the invisible, exploring the complexity of our emotions and the mystery that emanates from them in a polyrhythmic chiaroscuro that runs through each one of her tracks.  Draw Me A Silence Part. I delivers the most hypnotic variant of her music, centred on dark percussive rhythms and a skilful use of repetition. Each of the five tracks gets the listener into a trance, and right from the off 'Until the End' is a deeply enchanting track with cavernous dub grooves and supple rolling rhythms. 'Berbeka' perfectly unites trance, minimalism and the art of electronic repetition in a widescreen track that pairs synth drones with meditative percussive patterns.  'Itrik' is another masterclass that layers up harmonies, percussion and melodics with smooth and supple drums. 'Yenna' is a more propulsive affair, with uneven drum loops and scattered toms and shakers all building to a beautiful yet kinetic peak that sinks you ever deeper into another dimension. Last of all, 'Red Viper' brings haunting vocals to the thudding kicks, with off-grid percussive sounds, distant dusty winds and overdriven clicks and hits all driving things along.
