Pole Shift (2025 Remaster)

Hey…. Glad you dropped by. This is a simple, fun banjo song, with an instrumental break that has some mandolin, recorder, homemade percussion, and guitar-bass. It also has some vocal shenanigans. The song is about my time in graduate school, 40 years ago, when I lived off campus in a harmonious hippie house. I lived in the attic with my wife, and there were 4-6 roommates downstairs at any one time. We were all university students, peace loving, free-thinking, socio-environmentally conscious free spirits who became a family of sorts. There were potlucks, guitar jams, gardening, all sorts of ecological endeavors, helping our neighbors out, sharing meals, peace protests, shows and concerts and of course, studying for our classes, among other things. It was a time that helped shape who we would become. There was Joan, who became a professional wildlife photographer, Jack, an environmental engineer, Tim, a social worker, who built a farmhouse and had a large family with the love of his life. Andrea, a founder/owner of a community composting and recycling business, Delilah, an ecological research scientist and me, a laid back science teacher. We’ve kept in touch over the years, and now we are all old people. A lot of that lifestyle, ideology and sense of peace and freedom has stuck with me to this day. Hope you like the song. Mark

Our Harmonious Hippie House

I always wanted to make a sonic companion to the last song Bitzone, Frawstakwa, and I made together, “What Difference Does It Make.” I finally got my chance. This one came together real fast. Bitzone sent me a raw beat, I asked Frawstakwa to kick it off, and then I made some arrangement adjustments and laid down my lyrics and vocals based on Frawstakwa’s. Bitzone then finished it up and bada-boom, gotta move, gotta shake!

Massive thanks to Frawstakwa for bringing the fresh ideas and original verse and chorus vocals. And big thanks to Bitzone for always make the tracks more vivid than I could imagine.

I wrote this song 15 years ago for close friend and guitarist Elmer Stone. Elmer and I have collaborated on three songs on Soundcloud but this one is purely a tribute to him and the friendship we have shared for the past thirty-plus years.  It is also a memorial for his wife Bonnie who he lost two years ago. She was a core contributor to his music, life partner, and his best friend.
I am indebted to Mike Fox and Axel Meningen for taking my rough demo of the song and making it a broadcast quality production.
