The Other Nomad  - Triad Voices (2015)

This is the second of two tracks off “These Two Are Not Brothers” E.P. 
Crystal Compass is a journey through layering grooves that weave on top and beneath one another throughout the rises and falls in momentum of the track. It’s foundation is grounded by an alternating bass drum pattern that kicks while higher frequency percussive elements do work to create a continuous feeling of swaying back and forth. 
One by one differing lead elements layer on top the groove as a moments of noise make their way to the forefront as they influence a building to what becomes a fascinating overlapping poly rhythm melody.

I came across Neielisrael’s spoken word of “When a Black Man Walks.” Immediately I was incredibly moved by the power of her voice projecting the truth of a people. And I finally feel as if I’m at the stage of music production where I can channel and contemplate through the medium and perhaps challenge myself to expand from previous techniques into a sound of my own while of this time.  

So I sampled much of her performance for this work and am very pleased with how the rhythm of the track intensifies to the concepts she’s highlighting. Through the relentless bass loop there is an determination that rises and falls, over and over, again and again as if we’re caught in a kind of spiral in time when it appears like progress is being made yet we find ourselves in a similar position. The Tulsa Massacre was less than 100 years ago.  But at the same time, the relentless bass loop creates a feverish groove - a groove that will never give in, one that makes you want to move your hips, to tap your feet, to keep walking.

I was invited by an innovating Chicago cohort of afro-futurists to contribute both graphically and with a couple of sets for Virtual Burning Man for the camp Solar Shrine. While the camp was all set to represent physically this year, the universe had different plans. 

However, that didn't stop an eager demographic of earthlings known as burners from remaining vigilant in their maker-ship: hence, a virtual platform of burning man was put together. And while it's not the same as the real event, it shouldn't be thought of as trying to be.

This is what tireless creatives do, they create. Kudos to all who contributed to the project at large - designing and engineering in a time of tense constraints and extreme conditions. Burning Man is so much deeper than any glossy image may portray. It can be the best of us.

On view from October 22nd through 31st at Observatory is Of Incidence, a joint exhibition of artists  Dwight Portocarrero and Edoardo Cozzani, interrogates how we relate to--and our perception of--what is natural and what is man made. The work addresses themes confronting ecological awareness: artificial constructs, remote sites, philosophical speculation, questions of domesticity, and specular surfaces. 


Dwight Portocarrero engages incidence through reflection. A “cut”, from what could be a suburban backyard, harnesses a white picket fence as armature: paintings on reflective film invite distorted views of viewer, context, and the man-made presented as natural (in the form of an array hyper manicured botanical simulacra).  

In Shifting Scapes Edoardo went on a twenty days solo trip across six states in the American west, with three thousand square feet of aluminum kitchen foil, a tent and a cooking burner. He sculpted and manipulated the aluminum to become part of the environment, and slept every night next to the installation sites.

Now, he is approaching Incidence bringing sand, soil, rocks and aluminum foil  inside of an industrial space, in order to recreate the same kind of intervention from Shifting Scapes, but this time within the city scape. Edoardo is blurring the lines between what’s man made and what’s organic, documenting the human foot print on the environment, while attempting to rediscover  the rituals behind our relationship with nature and landscape.

Dwight Portocarrero
explores the precarious state of our ecosystem through sculpture, living installations, and works on canvas. Having  grown up in a tropical environment, his appreciation for fertile land and extensive flora has impacted his aesthetic inquiry. His interest in recontextualizing the garden stems from witnessing socio-political unrest and its repercussions. Portocarrero lives and works in New York, often visiting the garden in Venezuela, using it as a medium that, in essence, translates its scene into objects. Flipping the Global South through sculpture, Portocarrero’s living installations relocate power in the most unlikely of spaces.

Edoardo Cozzani 
works with experimental photography and on-site installation based pieces. Using sculpture in conjunction with light sensitive reactions he is exploring the interactions between nature, men, and the structures that govern this coexistence. His research is all based on the role myth played in the shaping of society and the history that brought its iconography to animate from a natural to an artificial habitat.

Martino (Other Nomad)
is an artist of collage. For him, combining image on canvas is synonymous with mixing program within space or tracks on turntables. In this way, ‘the event’ is a medium of exploration; a carefully constructed substrate in which a particular set of known elements are designed to challenge one’s commonly held associations with the material. For Martino this show represents a moment when his definition of collage is tested from the role of a curator.
