Combining the happy swinging feel of the Kansas City Jazz scene with the hard, soulful, groove of St. Louis Funk/Soul/Rhythm&Blues, The People’s Key blends the best of the two Midwestern styles into one coherent sound. Led by organ player Ryan Marquez, The People’s Key swings in the traditional style of the jazz medium but provides the listener with the opportunity to ride along inside of the jazz vehicle with them as they relive sounds from yesteryear by sporting a songbook with newer tunes from modern times. The People’s Key covers an assortment of styles/artists to deliver the listener a classic-vintage organ sound with a fresh, new twist. Whether a longtime lover/listener of jazz organ or a new friend to jazz in general, there are songs in the set for all ages/levels of ears to enjoy.

From open mics to festival stages, C. Jay Conrod has made a name for himself as a dynamic performer on the live music scene of St. Louis. Conrod has sung background for St. Louis acts such as Jada Avenue, Coco Soul, teresajenee, and Juanita Place, opened for nationally known artists like India.Arie and Lalah Hathaway, and performed as a featured vocalist with multi-instrumentalist Lamar Harris.

In the studio, Conrod has collaborated with hip-hop artists like Rockwell Knuckles, iLLPHONICS, Thelonius Kryptonite, and Black Spade. Conrod was featured on Lamar Harris’s “Live at the Bistro” CD/DVD, is awaiting the release of new material with Harris in the coming months, and is
still working on his debut album, “For the Broken & Mending, Part One.”

The People’s Key is an organ jazz ensemble designed to connect the jazz vernacular with a modernized songbook. The People’s Key performs material from popular artists, genres, songs, and themes of recent times to engage in the maximum connection possible with their audience participants. Artists covered include: The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Green Day, Radiohead, Nirvana, Queen, Jay-Z  and so much more! Debuting in 2013, the group has had the opportunity to open for national acts such as The Jeff Coffin Mu’tet and Fareed Haque’s Math Games. In 2014 the band was nominated for an award in the jazz category by The River Front Times. The People’s Key released their first full-length album in partnership with DJ Nune is Lamar Harris in July ‘14. “The Shawn Carter Jazz Suite” is a compilation and organ jazz interpretation of iconic pop star/rapper Jay-Z’s music.
