This track was composed in response to a challenge issued by The Crow Hill Company to create a track using all of the 6 Vaults beta instruments they have created and released over the last 6 months or so. An additional part of the challenge was that each entrant was randomly given a particular key to compose their track in. I was given key of "A". The time limit for completion was one week. 

The Vaults instruments are given away free by the Crow Hill Company. If you are interested, go to their web page and sign up. They are definitely worth having. There are likely to be more in the future too.

I am still feel very proud of the string-quartet arrangement of „Throw back the little ones“, which I published around one year ago. I got very positive feedbacks and even in the circles of Steely Dan-aficionados the arrangement and the exceptional vocals of Jimmy Rivas were received with friendliness (and believe me Steely Dan fans are very critical). So I felt very motivated to continue.
So after one year I can present another string-quartet arrangement of a Steely Dan-song. I have chosen „Fire in the hole“. The song is one of my favourites of their first album „Can’t buy a thrill“ from 1972. It’s driven by the piano. As usual there are many chords, melodically rich interludes, everything is crafted to total perfection.

I arranged the song in the notation-software „Sibelius“. Then I set up the Cello with VSL „Solo strings“, at last I recorded the two violins and the viola live.
I have to thank Jimmy Rivas again for joining this project and his great vocals.

Instruments used: Violin „Anton Piegendorfer“ built 1902, unfortunately I could not borrow the viola of my sister, so I had to borrow a viola from AaKe violinmakers Bad Homburg (http://www.rhein-main-geigenbau.de/aake/contente.htm); VSL Violoncello from „Solo strings"

Recording notes: I have recorded the three upper string-instruments with three different microphones:
First Violin: Beyerdynamic M88TG
Second violin: Electro Voice N/D967
Viola: AKG C-1000S

The meaning of Steely Dan’s lyrics are mostly dark and ambiguous and „Fire in the hole“ is a perfect example. I read many interpretations and one, that convinces me is to imagine here a man, who fought in the Vietnam war. He has lost some years of life, has to get a low-class job („A woman’s voice reminds me to serve and not to speak“) as a waiter, but he still has to fight against the flashbacks of the horrific experiences („With a cough I shake it off“).

All I Need - Miranda Foxx and the Bloodhounds

A new piano sound is here to be explored: the Vertical Concert Grand Klavins M450i. An Everest of sound, a friend commented - she may be right... :-)

Our Una Corda piano has been sampled and is available as a VSTi at Native Instruments - they did a great job, it's fascinating! Also take a look at The Giant from NI, the VSTi of our Model 370 vertical concert grand piano...

Love to express myself on the keyboard now and then, only improvising... sometimes it works out, sometimes not - like real life... :-) Actually I'm a piano builder, not a pianist... ;-)

I'm recording mostly using the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88 keyboard, Reaper for DAW, and various Native Instruments sound libraries, sometimes live on the Una Corda.

Wish I had more time to explore all the fine musicians here - it's fascinating, always something new and inspirational to find, within the infinite world of music..!

Please be patient with me in case I'm not replying on your comments short term - I'm extremely busy building pianos... I definitely appreciate your remarks, ideas, suggestions, and will get back to you as I can afford..!
