FRUITCAST #6 | dave dinger | tropical pineapple express

As the name suggests, this song is a quick and fast blast, with a driving kick pattern and bass groove. Just as soon as it gets going, it suddenly goes into an extended chord fade out, and the song is finished. I’m not sure what I did to this in mixing/mastering, except for the stretched fade-out.

This song's name derives from the fact that the song took up a lot, if not all, of the PO-20's 16 pattern slots to make. With so many patterns, this song doesn't exactly sit still, my favorite pattern being the sort of trap type beat with the ratcheted hi-hats and kicks. Mixing wise, there's the main recording plus a separate track with the recording run through some delay and reverb. I especially like the end where I reversed the tail of the song to create a cool swoop effect.

Yeah Complex

Listening to this song, it is immediately obvious why it has its name. The beat starts off right away, punching hard, and then is built up with more layers before a tense and frantic solo. Finally the chords come in for a moment, before an arpeggio abruptly finishes the song. I believe I doubled the recording up with a slightly bass boosted version to give the low end more presence in this somewhat dark song.

Boss Music

The original name of this song was “Tada Another One,” as I was pleased with myself that I had turned out another good song. Delay, reverb, and compression were added to this song, and the delay/reverb version might have been doubled up with the original recording. (I don’t remember if they were or not.)

Tada

Pew Pew was chosen to be the album opener because it feels like a typical PO-20 song that I’d make. Fade in, fade out, sidechained chords, driving beat, arpeggios, and an improvised solo. All the great elements are here. As far as I can remember, this song was barely edited at all, just some volume changes. The name of this song was a suggestion from my friend VTD, who did the amazing cover art.
