Night has fallen, the threat of extinction riding on the edge of its transition. Decaying and contorted faces of the undead leer from the shadows, twisted limbs reaching from the darkness towards the eternal signal - driven to crush its subversive broadcast and extinguish the final beacon. A single being stands in their way - the strongest of his kind, the last of a genetic line extending into a derelict past with an imperative to preserve the future. An arsenal of sonic weaponry residing within the lines of his palms, drawn forth through the ancient forms manifested by long-dead masters. His swift movement amongst the shuffling army is efficient - acute strikes snap limbs, raw concentrated power crushes bone, low-frequency techniques leaving little behind from the weight of brutal molecular disruption. With the rising of the sun, only he remains – the broken dead lying scattered and without motion – the focused power of his fighting form has prevailed… the signal is preserved.
 
Following up on the impact of the sampler EP, L 33 unleashes his most devastating technique upon the EATBRAIN label with his KARATE LP. An artist residing at the heart of the Eatbrain collective with an entirely unique and recognizable sound – his album delivers a polished and hard-hitting array of tracks designed with pure dancefloor palpitation in mind. Under the restless blanket of a heartless night, the sculptor shifted uneasily in his atelier sleeping quarter. Slumber evaded him, every hallucination of momentary solace chased quickly into the shadows of his disquiet. Tormented by the weight of his task, to surpass the greatest creators of the past and deliver to their dynasty an icon to strike fear and awe into the hearts of the proletariat… In the depths of that darkness his mind cried out to every conceivable higher entity, light and dark – begging for the inspiration that would save him. With the encroachment of dawn, tiredness washed over him… pulling his flayed mind into a shallow sea of morbid sleep. A torrent of nightmares flooded him - visions of an amorphous entity clawing at birthing sack, a hideous soul struggling for its freedom. He awoke with a choking gasp... adrenaline flowing. Something glinted dully upon his bedside in the morning light – the razor edge of a sculptor’s blade. Picking it up and looking closely at its sharp form, covered in an obscure script. He was certain it wasn’t there in the night, it certainly wasn’t one of his… He rose from bed, moving over to the head-shaped block of clay that had awaited his touch for too long. With precision he swiftly scraped deep into the featureless façade. Gasping suddenly, he staggered back, dropping the infernal tool in horror - fear seared deep into his eyes… the clay had reacted, drawing away from the blades edge as if it was living tissue, a trickle of blood seeping out of the fresh wound. The barely shaped head was moving… writhing as if in pain, as if it couldn’t breathe – as if there was something trapped inside... He quickly picked up the blade, cutting again and again, freeing its twisted and tortured mouth, slicing away the substance piece by piece, uncovering the flesh beneath… freeing anguish-filled, bloodshot eyes that flicked around in perpetual terror. Stepping back… he looked with mouth aghast at the vision that confronted him – the head twisting to free itself from his sculptor’s block, a vision of suffering, the deep pain of reality flooding into his creation’s soul.

Kosen Productions is slowly becoming one of the most defining independent drum & bass labels of 2017. They’ve proven with each of their consecutive releases that they’re able to stand up against more longstanding imprints, providing a fresh selection of talent between every single output. And with the inclusion of Kutlo, a Slovakian born producer who’s beginning his antiquated path to success, they’ve demonstrated that yet again there’s longevity within their reign.

Having already released on the likes of NeurofunkGrid, Renegade Hardware and Let it Roll, Kutlo’s addition to Kosen Production’s back catalogue of meticulously chiselled music comes as no surprise. He’s already toured extensively throughout the European scene, from his home country to the Czech Republic, seeding his music to audiences worldwide which is why fans both new and old will be eagerly awaiting his forthcoming EP on Kosen. Between its ticking, atmospheric introduction, to the guttural undertows of ‘Wasp Nest’, Kutlo ensures that the full EP drags you into his heavyweight production standard and leaves you there to drown.

Beginning the collection of records is ‘Memento’. It sets a precedent, one built through snipping hi-hats and a gradual punch line of intimidating beat patterns. Instantly you know the direction which ‘Memento’ is about throw you into, with a flipped bassline and ominous vocal snippets. Then ‘Exotherm’ dives you head first through elevating pitches of synth and crackling percussive undertows. Your aural nerves are pushed through each steppy drum rhythm before once more you’re made acutely aware of the drop that’s about to envelop you. ‘Out of Place’ clicks into gear with a tell-tale, grimy vocal sifting through its intro and a mix which gradually pulls itself together. Each lyrical melody draws you in deeper, before you’re moved into a steppy gait. And finishing the EP is ‘Wasp Nest’, a track which crackles with an LFO bassline, nodding to its namesake, and cuts deeper with every quickening layer of metallics. Kutlo leaves a lasting impression with ‘Wasp Nest’ and it’s the perfect way to wrap up an intimidating furore into the producer’s world. Kosen show that as ever, their selections are gold-standard, epitomised by each intimidating delivery Kutlo serves up.

For us at Southpoint, we are always super excited to be able to introduce new Brighton-based acts into the fold, so when Foundry popped up with this track we simply couldn’t resist. The Brighton and Colorado based duo have put together an absolute steamer in ‘Teriyaki’ as their signature reesey leads get to work. These well designed synths sit perfectly alongside wavey drum leads and unpredictable beat stops, resulting in a fantastic final composition. With upcoming Southpoint releases in the pipeline, this two man team is a name you should all get used to seeing under the Southpoint banner.

A shadow fell with bleak weight against the broken cityscape as the towering frame of the scaled behemoth stood above the now desolate metropolis. Cold eyes flickered within the recesses of its heavy skull, surveying its fragmented and twisted domain for any remnants of the fleshy morsels of the living who had once resided there. Beneath its talons shifted stone and metal, groaning under its weight in a cacophanus lament for what had been. It lumbered forward through the carnage of the city, led by its singular mind, barely noticing as each thundering step felled the last vestiges of that once grand city around it. This city on the rocky plain, a pinnacle of the species that built it, now laid to waste by this overwhelming titan of entropy and fury. The towering skyline collapsed around the beast as it effortlessly shifted and demolished with single sweeps of its tail. Issuing a howling, guttural roar of pure, brutal energy, its inhuman rage resounded throughout the city, angular audio reflections bouncing across the broken buildings and striking fear deep into the hearts of those who still clung to a wretched life. They haunted the shadows, hiding from the its ravenous hunger, hidden away in fear amongst the crumbling concrete. With a burst of sudden fury the beast twisted, striking at a skyscraper and tearing it open, spilling the mess of its insides and the once precious multitude of human things across the streets below. But missing was the softness of the meal it craved. It lumbered onward, the strange paths which this insignificant species had laid, leading it through the decaying land... a constant drive for flesh feeding its voracious desire - that endless, unfillable void. Its stride echoed with the ominous assurance of recurrence, its cycle of consumption would begin anew.

Drum and bass duo Matrix & Futurebound released their latest single Live Another Day ft. Alex Hepburn at the beginning of this month. With the track soaring across the radio waves and climbing playlists at a steady pace, the producers are wasting no time in adding further fuel to the fire with a special ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ VIP mix.
