Yes, it really has been fifteen years since Future Tech (aka Drumsound & Bassline Smith) signalled the beginning of the Technique Recordings odyssey with their eponymous debut collaboration. Since then, the drum and bass sound has spread its tendrils from the dark corners of the underground into the limelight of mainstream appreciation. And Technique has been at the forefront of that evolution all the way. So, here's an LP to show the world exactly what a decade and a half among the top tier of D&B labels sounds like.

Label heads Drumsound & Bassline Smith take pole position, dropping straight into the drama of the Friction-supported “Spring Heel Jack”. Then comes another of Technique's most recognisable acts, Tantrum Desire with the low-down funk of “Shuffle”, followed by another Friction-favourite from the bossmen with “Sputnik”. The big names keep coming throughout the album, as Crissy Criss supplies the VIP of his monumental “Create the Future” and the mighty Digital goes dubbed-out with a remix of “Phantasm”. Plus Drumsound & Bassline Smith's alter-ego 2DB pass through with the highly-grimey “Terrahawk” and L Plus delivers two precision-engineered killers in the form of “Red Planet” and “Going Down”.

Flipping the script, Technique new boys Document One strike from two angles with the laid-back “Jazz Club” and the dirty dancefloor uppercut of “Body Like Wow”. TREi takes us to the big room with “Here & Now”, and the ever-individual MaxNRG shows off his ability to combine energy with melody on “Far Frontiers of Space”. Erb N Dub and Skope recruit Mr Dirty Smirks, MC SMK himself, to bring some typically hard bars to “Pull it Back”. Kronology does what it says on the tin with some “Razor Sharp” technoid-jungle vibes. And Aussie badman Spectrem brings some hands-in-the-air euphoria with “Say Goodbye” and then roughen things up with “The Future”. Infrasonik take the honour of completing the collection with “Bricks Breaking”. CMR001 takes the shape of a remix package of Overtake, from the man Coppa himself, featuring Adriana Hamilton. The first mix comes from the multi-talented Callide & Intraspekt. The remixers take the spirit of the tune, to keep strong and believe in everything you do, and add their unique, rave-busting  flavour.  The  intro will  draw you  i  n,  but  the  breaks  and synths  soon  drop,  adding weight  and  depth  to  the  already-huge  production.  The  clubs  will  lap  this  one  up,  as  Callide  & Intraspekt overcome any arguments with their heavy remix. 
Next up on the boards is Livewire, who takes things in a more liquid direction, bringing forward a piano line which fits perfectly under Coppa’s MC vocals and cut-ups of Adriana’s singing. The beats are rolling on this one, taking the track forward, heading straight for the heart and the mind. A real end-of-summer bubbler, Livewire brings something new and fresh out of the track as only he can  .
Lastly, Raise Spirit takes on the track, raising the bar once again, with a string-fuelled intro which morphs into some neat overdriven guitar. The bass is to the fore on Raise’s version, 
with  the  track  completed  with  a  major  headnodding  beat.  All  three  versions  are  going  to smash, so give them all a listen and choose your favourite.

Piercing Armor (Soul Version)

These days, the name L Plus on a release comes laden with expectations. There'll be expansive areas of soundscape harbouring rave-reverberating bass and precision-strike drums. There'll be detailed attention to musicality and a never-lapsing surge of energy. And if you've been checking shows from heavy-hitters like Friction recently, you'll know that this EP delivers on those expectations to the max.

“Jailbreak” is all about controlled aggression. A suspenseful chord pattern interspersed with drive-by shots of bass sets the scene. Then there's a multi-stage drop, first delivering us into a pressurised container of bass and kicks, before a further build leads us to the addition of punch-to-the-solar-plexus snares. This is heavy, heavy, unrelenting stuff.

And talking of heavy stuff, the next track is, aptly enough, “One Tonne of Bass”. A big room intro built from swirling atmospherics and wide sonorous sustained notes shimmers into view. Then the eponymous vocal sample signals a drop down into straight-up head-nodding grimy funk. Then L Plus keeps the heat rising as the bassline modulates to give each sixteen bars a character of its own. This is one to give the dancefloor a proper workout.

Then “Arcade” brings something for ravers to love and producers to envy. The chirps, bleeps and melodic patterns of eighties gaming are recreated and woven into twenty-first synthesis in a way we haven't quite heard before. It's a shoot 'em up between nostalgic stabs and ultra-modern bass and riffs which grows into a full on sonic war, and it's an addictive exultant joy. This is one that screams out to be pulled back and played from the top.

Things are a little darker in the dystopian city conjured up by “Snitch”. There's a technoid paranoia in the air, brought on by an approaching insurgency of low end. The drop provides no relief as sparse beats leave the bassline free to fill the space with interrogation-room oppression. With one eye always on the dancefloor, this is where L Plus proves his mastery of creating mood with music.

This EP proves why L Plus tunes are a constant fixture in the sets of well-informed DJs. Combining a rare technical proficiency with a well-honed musical and storytelling sensibility, plus a ruthless desire to smash parties everywhere, this producer is at the top of his game. This is creative rave music set to blaze on raves and airwaves alike.
