Neutrals are a punk band from the San Francisco Bay Area, channeling a wide range of '70s and '80s punk, post-punk, and indie-pop influences. Their debut album "Kebab Disco" came out in 2019 on Emotional Response Records and garnered universal acclaim as "an excellent collection of terse melodies, unique storytelling, and scraping pop. (AllMusic)". The band followed-up with an excellent five song EP earlier this year on Domestic Departure.

"Personal Computing" b/w "In The Future" is their new single and has the distinction of being the final entry in our SLR30 Singles Series. Both sides were recorded just before the COVID-19 lockdown began and share a bittersweet nostalgia for an imagined rose-tinted future that never was. The mood of thwarted utopian dreams feels all too appropriate right now and the tense, angular songs on this single are an ideal soundtrack for this unsettled moment.

Drunk As A Punk (in a Post Punk World)

Lead singer Jana Hjalgrimsdottir describes the song as: “Calling it Out is about facing what is pulling you down in life, and then having the courage to cut free from it, even though it can be difficult and painful”

The music is exploring the tension between dreams and desperation, and draws a line to early goth and post punk, but is also forward looking. Fremmand is fronted by the charismatic lead singer Jana Hjalgrimsdóttir, who with her all-in attitude is like the volcano Vesuvius erupting.

Art-pop trio Oya Paya are set to make their long awaited return with a brand new 6 track mini-album ‘Connect’. The band are renowned across Liverpool for their unique blend of sounds from across the globe, drawing on inspirations from their varied countries of heritage (Singapore, France, Iran and England). The 6 track LP blurs the lines between alt rock, grunge and electro infused indie to create a sound as eclectic as the cultural roots of the outfit.

Promise The Monster delivers the wonderfully airy new single ‘Beating Heart’
 
Having established herself as one of Sweden’s most esoteric and mesmerising songwriters, with critical acclaim from Uncut, Mojo, Clash and Pitchfork, and shows with the likes of Chelsea Wolfe, Mark Kozelek and Jens Lekman in recent years, Promise and the Monster (aka Billie Lindahl) has now returned to deliver her latest sweeping single ‘Beating Heart’, lifted from her forthcoming new EP ‘Chewing Gum’.

Following on from the recently shared offering ‘Closed My Eyes’, ‘Beating Heart’ marks her sophomore release through new label Icons Creating Evil Art, and continues that smooth and lofty aesthetic that she is known for. Breathing an effortlessly warm and enticing atmosphere into this new work, her latest delight shows us that she is currently creating some of her most breathtaking material to date.

Speaking about the new single, Billie said, "Beating Heart is about two sisters watching each others back through adulthood. One of them is more reckless though so the other one has a lot to do. It was fun recording the song since it got bigger and bigger all the time, like a suitcase full of random stuff."

While adding about the forthcoming new video, "The video is directed by the fantastic animator Cissi Efraimsson, she made two bald, wide smiling sisters travelling to meet each other, dancing together in a velvet palace."

Billie’s musical education started young, playing Swedish folk on the cello at school by day and recording mix tapes by night. She became fascinated with Nick Drake, Kaki King and Elliot Smith, writing her debut EP ‘Antarktis’ and first album ‘Transparent Knives’ at the age of 18, having been picked up by Imperial Recordings. With a father playing country bands and mother into an eclectic mix of jazz and alternative rock, from day one her tastes were always going to be fluid.

By second album ‘Red Time’ in 2009, Promise and the Monster were touring Europe with, among others, label mate José Gonzales. Having relocated from the pine forests of rural Sweden, Billie embedded herself in Stockholm’s underground music, literature and art scenes. Collaborations followed, with experimental bands such as Alcest and This Gift is a Curse along with performances on heavyweight festival bills such as Roadburn.

Signing to Bella Union for her third full-length she released ‘Feed The Fire’ in 2016, produced by Love Martinsen, a quintessential break-up record that focused on abstract imagery.

In 2020, Martinsen joined Billie to co-write her upcoming material. The new songs explore a less introspective side of her psyche, with an emphasis on the tongue-in-cheek nature lurking beneath a veneer of earnestness.

On the signing news, Billie tells us, “I'm so pleased, together we can take this in a great new direction. I used to like writing quite cryptic stuff but I tried hard this time to get out of that safe haven and be more direct. The new songs often express the feeling of being that last person at the party, dancing slowly in the background, waiting for something to happen. Like a sad moonlight disco.”

While the label Icons Creating Evil Art added, "We are thrilled to welcome one of the most iconic voices in dark pop to our evil art family. Promise and the Monster has been working right beneath the surface and in the shadows creating the most beautiful world of her own. It's time we invite you all to share it with us! "

Hindsight

The Real Zebos began as a dorm room project between co-founders/songwriters/frontmen Connor Brandt and Jordan Gaul after meeting on Craigslist in late 2014.

After nearly three years of releasing demos online to an audience of virtually nobody, The Real Zebos filled out their lineup to become a real band and begin playing live shows in January of 2018. The band hit the studio later that year to bring their demos to life. The result is the debut album “Strictly Platonic” – a nod to their Craigslist roots – which earned an “Album of the Year” nomination in the upcoming Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards.

You can find this five-piece (guitarist Jake Strange, bassist George Cooper, drummer Logan Swander) performing in Omaha and throughout the Midwest, winning over crowds with a combination of sugary hooks, strobe lights, and razor-sharp jawlines.
