A genuinely exciting new face on the international jazz scene, UK-born singer-pianist Anthony Strong’s debut album Stepping Out will be released on April 8th 2013. A refreshingly hip blend of melodic jazz-pop and classic big band jazz that calls to mind the likes of Harry Connick Jr and Jamie Cullum, the album showcases Strong’s phenomenal piano technique, accomplished vocal talents and consummate composing and arranging skills.

It was thanks to a support slot with the legendary BB King and an EP release which reached #1 on the UK jazz charts that Strong grabbed the attention of some of the world’s top record labels in early 2012. Eventually opting to sign a worldwide recording deal with iconic French label Naïve, which saw him join a roster that includes multi-million selling singers Adele, Carla Bruni and Katie Melua, Strong set about recording his debut album. The result is an assured set of classic standards and originals that incorporates elegant love songs, swinging big band romps and reworked pop tunes.

After receiving a scholarship to The Purcell School of Music in 2004, Strong funded a degree at the world-renowned Guildhall School of Music by gigging in London and quickly built up a reputation as an in-demand session musician, playing with artists such as Marti Pellow, Beverley Knight and Charlotte Church. He also spent 9 months in the West End as Jerry Lee Lewis in the show Million Dollar Quartet, performing to thousands of theatre-goers including jazz-lover Rod Stewart, who came back the next day to tell him that he thought his performance was “f***ing amazing!” After graduating from Music College in 2008, Anthony decided that his own music needed to take centre stage and before long was performing with his trio around Europe, catching the eye of some of jazz’s top promoters and agents and on the path to signing his first record deal.

With energy and talent to burn, plus a knack for breathing new life into jazz standards, Strong’s arrival signals a welcome direction for the genre and Stepping Out is a debut album that presents a young artist with a very bright future.
