Riders On A Storm - Burning Man 2013 - mixed by Isaiah Martin

In anticipation of the Scumfrog's 'Collection 2021', released at the end of October, here is the recording of his return to DJing. Recorded in front of a packed dance floor in NYC on September 16th. 

After lockdowns, quarantines, isolations and live streams, The Scumfrog returned to the decks in front of a real crowd for an extended set at the venue where he started MBTS 6 years earlier. For once, he managed to press 'record' on his recorder before he started. Enjoy more than 3 hours of dancing to The Scumfrog's interpretation of post-pandemic boogie.

It has been quite some time since the last time we gathered for a night of MBTS. I wanted to take some time after the pandemic to be quiet and see how the dance music scene would evolve, and what sounds would come out of the standstill that was Covid. Now that I have a good sense of where I want to be sonically, and what kind of energy I want to spread onto dance floors, I am ready to restart MBTS in 2023. After 8 years this is our last year bringing the Disco Knights camp back to Burning Man. I made this mix with the long drive to Burning Man in mind. Every year the drive up is a very interesting part of the journey for me… I think of it as the emotive start to the burn experience. This year in particular as it’s the last year we’re bringing our disco space ship to the playa. So the anticipation of all the memories of the last 8 years that I know are going to be flying through my mind made me want to play a set that I can rock during the drive through Tahoe hills. Not necessarily a mix of my favorite tracks played at the camp or even a representation of it, but more the feelings I’d like to remember looking back at the last 8 years.

I showed up with no expectations and was filled. It’s hard to explain Burning Man… so much energy and passion expended. Warming by the fireflies, laughing out loud, disco rollerskating, a kiss in the cloud.

Preparing for this event I was completely unaware that the format I chose had never been done. It took a lot of technical logistics but it was totally worth it and thankfully there were no glitches. The hotspot kept working, the battery didn't run out, the sunset was perfect, and most importantly, the crowd was very aware and respectful of the distancing policies. 

Of course, after everything NYC has been through over the past months, you would expect this awareness, and it was heartwarming to see everyone strike such a good balance between being together, dancing, and still keeping their distance and their masks on. 

I played from 6pm until sunset (8:30pm) and the output of my mixer was streamed to my website. Everyone in attendance picked up the stream in their own way. Some brought small speakers, other brought bigger speakers, and many people listened on their headphones. But without big main speakers there was no center of gravity for the event, making everyone very comfortable to spread out of the beautiful open space in Prospect Park. And then the cream on top was the amazing vocal curation by @elliott-larue-1

Sunrise at Burning Man
It is high on the list of the things I could write a book about.

The relentless wrench that is 2020 forced us to consider and reconsider almost every aspect of our lives and routines, including Burning Man. In the quest of finding solutions for all this disruption, we all came up with some pretty cool stuff so far, and the creative forces that take the spectacle of Black Rock City to increasingly bigger heights each year went into overdrive to create and a virtual version of our beloved dust bowl. 

Comparing the virtual Burning Man to its IRL counterpart is as foolish as comparing ‘2019 Burning Man’ to the 1998 edition. Each year is different, and 2020 forced us to adapt to a new kind of different. Playing a sunrise set on the real playa is incomparable to doing one in VR, where only one out of the 24 global time-zones experiences the actual sunrise while the music unfolds; where there are no collective goosebumps, shivers and hugs, and where you can probably not feel the bass like when you’re standing in front of a battalion of dusty sub-woofers. 

However, there were elements of yesterday’s sunrise that made it uniquely special for me. The most important element was the inspiration to make a long three-hour Deep House journey again, which I had not done in months. Quarantine had made me explore different genres and moods, dismissing Deep House as something pointless that should only be played in the presence of collective energy. But even though a streaming event and a VR event are ‘cheating’ when it comes to collective energy, this one still had that feeling that the moment is being experienced by many people at once. 

I very much enjoyed the act of imagining the full extent of collective energy, even though my screen only revealed the implication of this energy. I am very proud of this musical journey and I published it for re-listening. I hope you enjoy it too, and you too can close your eyes when listening, and imagine the moment when we are all standing in front of those bass-bins again, and we can scream, shout, gaze, and hug. The power of music is an incredible force, and I am honored to be a link in its chain.

The Dutch/American artist The Scumfrog has been a household name in the underground Dance Music scene since 2000. His brand is known for many traits; music production, musicianship, DJing, featured vocalist, music coach, radio host, and remixing.

From his timeless early works like Watersong, to dubbed-out remixes of songs by mainstream artists like Kylie Minogue, Annie Lennox, Missy Elliott, to collaborations with David Bowie, Sting, and Cyndi Lauper (resulting in a Grammy nomination), he has been featured on virtually every prominent independent Dance label, from Bedrock to 1605, from Positiva to Knee Deep In Sound.

With his roots firmly planted in the experimental side of Dance Music and Electronica, The Scumfrog toured the world many times over with his unique DJ sets. He is also a staple at the Burning Man festival, where he performs his annual sunrise and sunset rituals to his devoted followers. The Scumfrog hosts club nights called M.B.T.S. (Most Below The Surface) where he usually plays the entire night, and he is in production with a new project in NYC featuring live percussionists.
