PROGRAM NOTES
Although Deep Blue Ocean is not meant to be overtly programmatic, I thought it would be wonderful to explore the oceanic depths, so during a trip to the Gulf of Mexico I became a certified scuba diver. I was truly inspired, whether by the large rolling waves on the open sea, the delicate back and forth of beds of seaweed, the vibrant colors of fish clustering around cities of coral, or the beams of sunlight that cascade over the ocean’s surface.

I was also inspired by my four year old son Dylan: his name means ocean or god of the seas in Welsh; he is an Aquarius, which means the water bearer; he is an excellent swimmer, and he loves listening to a movement of one of my choral works entitled Infinite Oceans.

While writing this piece, I could not have known that the worst oil spill in U.S. history would occur just north of where I visited. The darker moments in this work are the result of this tragedy. It is in three connected movements: The Darkness Below, Sunbeams and Waterfalls, and Accents and Waves.

Deep Blue Ocean is written for Steven Gosling and Blair McMillen of the American Modern Ensemble and is dedicated to my son Dylan.

"Crimean Travel" by Eryk Sowa is a musical suite that is a captivating and varied journey to the Crimea. It begins with a slow and sad Lento Mesto that captures the melancholic beauty of the peninsula. This is followed by a lively allegretto that reflects the happiness and liveliness of the local markets and festivities. In the third set, Romancer, a romantic and soulful melody sounds that is reminiscent of the picturesque landscapes and historical sights. The Scherzando surprises in the fourth set with playful and humorous passages that express the carefree and joy of traveling. Lento Grazioso, the fifth set, brings a slow and graceful melody that captures the calm elegance of nature and architecture in the Crimea. In the sixth sentence, Rubato Tempo, the pace is treated flexibly, which underlines the unpredictability and diversity of experiences on the trip. Moderato Espressivo, the penultimate sentence, is moderate at the pace and rich in emotional expression that reflects the deep impressions and moving moments of the trip. The suite ends with a lively Vivace that captures the exciting and lively energy of the final experiences in the Crimea and forms a dynamic highlight.

"Whispers of Nature" is a composition rooted in the New Age movement, created to take the listener on a deep sonic and emotional journey. The melody begins in a slow, gentle, and meditative manner, inviting introspection and an authentic connection with the inner self. This smooth opening sets the stage for a broader exploration of states of contemplation and harmony with nature.

As the composition evolves, the sounds guide you into a state of contemplation of nature, where calmness and inner peace become dominant. Then, the Balkan-Ottoman rhythms bring a subtle shift, introducing the listener to a more dynamic musical universe, where old traditions meet modernity. This section not only explores rhythmic diversity but also cultural richness, blending different traditions into a unified whole.

Towards the end, "Whispers of Nature" changes its tone again and transports you to South Africa, where tribal rhythms become predominant. Here, the Xhosa and Zulu languages harmoniously combine with English, creating a subtle anthem celebrating cultural and spiritual diversity. The two verses, performed in an African style, are a tribute to these rich cultures, adding a note of solemnity and respect.

The complexity of the piece is manifested in the precise moments where emotions quickly shift, evoking in the listener romantic, ethereal, or chill feelings. Each section of the piece is designed to bring something unique, yet integrated into the overall composition, offering a deep and varied musical experience.

"Whispers of Nature" is not just a musical piece, but an invitation to reflection, to the discovery and appreciation of cultural diversity, and to an inner journey towards peace and harmony. Each listener is encouraged to find their own meaning in this sonic journey, whether it be in tranquillity, contemplation, or the celebration of human diversity.
