The Space Between Us is proud to present their fourth release, the debut offering from Dociyle. A project that has been taking place over the last year, Dociyle stems from a love of sci-fi film / game scores and techno, garage, bass and electronic based music. Dociyle takes influence from such artists as Jon Hopkins, Djrum, Skee Mask, Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury. like sci-fi meets warehouse or an Alex Garland film meets techno. 

Devs / Deus is the first release from Dociyle, a 6 track EP that will be accompanied by a full audio/visual live experience. The EP is full of huge interstellar builds, alien-like sound design and drum breaks that create a unique blend between ambience and dance. The two lead tracks, Devs and Deus, both consist of huge analogue intros, hypnotic pads and field recordings to create the immersion of something out of reach to earth's surface.

The Space Between Us is proud to present the latest breakthrough in cell division, a most exciting advancement in the field of molecular biology. Meet - the Cytokinesis EP by Axon Growth Factor @axongrowthfactor. Cell division is a natural occurrence, yet the creation of this release was an undertaking that will leave even the smartest brains in a state of perplexity. Often mistaken for binary fission, the process of the production of these tracks was a sensitive exercise in the fibre of dance… executed with precision.
 
What began as experimentation via hardware-driven analogue jams, elements have been chopped, fine-tuned and formulated specifically for use on the dance floor. Meticulously designed to stimulate your central nervous system, the Cytokinesis EP signals the start of a new cellular generation through an all-new sonic experience.
 
Opener, Batch C is a balearic blend of trance, trippy minimal percussion and breaks. Primal drones and gated leads offset the rigidly sequenced percussion. All elements are pulled into line with a sneaky breakbeat switch-up, echoed by a euphoric pad which carries the listener through a barrage of deep four-to-the-floor tribal grooves.  
 
Cytokinesis teases a hazy yet uplifting prog-electro workout. Dub infused SFX and drones remain constant throughout, whilst playful melodic motifs and sparkling lead sequences sweep effortlessly over a foundation of wobbly yet focussed sub bass and stimulating electro rhythms. 
 
Oxidative stress meticulously combines dizzying percussion, screaming bass-lines and metallic synth riffs into a high-octane, bass-focused electro melter specifically designed for the club. Sluggish breaks carefully weave in and out of focus, momentarily aligning to the mobilising electro rhythms and undulating subs that lay beneath.
 
Mooro/Perth-based Guy Contact / @guycontact facilitates a mutation of the EP opener, Batch C. With a wonky acid bassline and a pulsating rhythm, it’s primed for a hazy late-night warehouse soundsystem. 
 
Naarm/Melbourne-based Escape Artist / @escapeartistaus offers a contrasting reinterpretation of the title track, Cytokinesis. A club-focussed, no frills, euphoric blue-sky trance stomper, the listener is left in a perfect state of bliss and wonderment.

The Space Between Us is honoured to announce its next offering - Corner Taken Quickly - the debut EP from Naarm-based artist Al Dente / @al-den-te. The intriguing producer, who comprises ⅓ of the acclaimed Neurocrank / @neurocrankk family and ½ of Nebula / @neb-u-la, shares what is quite possibly the most positive thing to come out of Melbourne’s extended lockdowns - the Corner Taken Quickly EP. Propelled first and foremost by a love of soccer, Al Dente’s EP title pays homage to one of the most iconic moments in Liverpool’s history – fans will know. Spurred on by other influential factors, from film to TV shows – and of course, much musical digging during months spent at home, the EP is sonically metamorphosed into this warpy, wonky 5-tracker which doesn’t take itself too seriously. With a collaboration with fellow Naarm-based producer @explicitjoy and a harmoniously energetic remix from none other than Montreal’s queen of turbo, Maara / @maara, the EP is primed for the most quirky and adventurous of dance floors –  and is as bendy as Trent Alexander Arnold takes his corners.

Setting the overarching atmosphere, Little Jerry is a dark cauldron of bubbling, fizzing electronics. Foreboding pads swell and deflate amongst skittish percussion to cook up the most off-kilter opener – almost as off-kilter as the Seinfeld episode for which is this track’s namesake – if you know, you know. The Translator turns up the temperature – an assembly of oddball percussive elements which skip alongside the warpy bassline and eerie echoes of Scarlett Johansson’s iconic vocal. Tension builds amidst sinister pads before making space for high hats and the kick – a wobbly intro which steadies itself all the way to the dance floor. 

Stepping wholeheartedly into emphatic club territory, Seven maintains the air of spookiness embodied throughout the release with its snarling bassline which rolls against familiar warps and vocal splinters. Next, Al Dente collaborates with Explicit Joy on Sonic Dialogue; a bouncy, stripped back, continuation of quirky, club-oriented moods.   

Last but not least, Maara takes the power output dial on The Translator and turns it up to the maximum; generating her Transductor Mix – an electrifying reimagination of the original. An explosive end to Al Dente’s EP – in true Maara style.

Rotations 22: al dente

Hot on the heels of our last release is an offering from Naarm’s queen of all things psychedelic — we present to you, the “Archangel” EP from Mabel / @mabelau.  A prolific producer pushing her own boundaries, Mabel is making a big impression far and wide. We’re thrilled to welcome Mabel to TSBU as we unveil this hot-as-hell trio of tracks.

The title track, Archangel, dives straight into psy-influenced territory. Syncopated rhythms and trippy vocal snips make for a steamy EP opener. 

Next up is Exoskeleton — a high energy, trance-kissed bomb that’ll whip any d-floor into euphoria. 

Last but not least, Octopus Stinkhorn is a full blown hypnotic psytrance weapon with a sexy and playful edge — rounding out this hot’n’heavy three tracker by leaving us wanting more <3

TSBU is back to proudly present the Hydration EP — the debut offering from the mysterious, yet larger-than-life, Tony XL. 

A response to the sounds and feelings of festivals over the summer down under (just in time for doof season) — big sound systems, scorching heat and dancing with your besties at sunset — the Hydration EP is emblematic of the replenishing of energy that comes with new beginnings. 

Opener 'Hydration' is a deep inhale and exhale to centre the mind and body — a euphoric, blue-sky trance stomper to set the tone. 'Majula' maintains the vibe with a further nod to the aus-prog movement. As the name suggests, 'Sundown' softens the mood with an ethereal groover to soundtrack the golden hour, while 'Persephone' offers a place for afterglow and reflection.

For Rotations 26 we have Activator — the newly formed project from two Naarm DJs Jaevin aka Vitamin DJ / @vitamin_D_J  and Clay aka Toorak Cowboy / @claywaddell.

Two of the most warm and vibrant lovers of the Naarm music scene, both Jaevin and Clay's infectious energy translates into their sets which are pure, unadulterated fun.

Progressive, trancey and with a little euro-house flava, this mix is nearly 2 hours of non-stop energy with a few unreleased local tracks ;)

Welcoming one of our eternal favourites, DJ Niamh / @evelkniamhel to the mix series!

Listening to Niahm DJ is one of life's great pleasures <3 her sets are a culmination of deep digging through progressive classics from decades past, often paired with unreleased tunez from locals. 

Niahm's taste is as diverse as they come and has not only seen her DJing at parties all around Naarm, but also slaying the airwaves at both PBS and SYN FM. 

This mix moves through genres and traverses many moods — deep, sexy tekky to euphoric and trancey — in perfect harmony. We're feeling lucky to have Niamh join the mix series <3

It's our 10th release :') Welcoming Pistaccio to the label with this 6 track EP, Direct Correlation. 

Ethereal pads flow endlessly over warm percussion in the spacey 'Dream Walk', followed by the tripped-out, dubby-ness of 'Direct Correlation'. 'Now Who' is a 90s house drenched number with euphoric piano accents and an acid line which ebbs and flows throughout. Downtempo goodness follows in the similarly blissful 'Breaka Your Soul', while the EP closes out with the hypnotic, floating 'Tonic Tandra'.

Needing very little introduction, our next guest is one of the most inspiring and talented artists in Naarm - and one of our close friends - Bex (@becarmstrongmusic). 

An artist in the truest sense of the word, Bex is a DJ, producer and visual artist. She is the founder of the online platform Space Cast (@spacecast-melbourne) - a project which facilities an art and music exchange that supports local artists financially through the sale of print. She's also the co-founder of the Spincycle parties alongside Robbie (@terrytec), and Send/Return with Hannah D (@hld) which showcases two djs playing back-to-back, all night long.

We're so grateful to put out this mix, which sees Bec channel psychedelic moods while maintaining a tough, tekky vibe which is synonymous with her sound.

Introducing Nightworks Vol 1, the first in a series of compilations by TSBU dedicated to club-focused sounds.

Nightworks Vol 1 sees some familiar faces return, while others unveil first releases, or first outings on the label. Featuring tracks from ten Naarm/Melbourne-based producers, Nightworks Vol 1 presents a melting pot of club-ready moods, from minimal rollers to high energy, sultry tech.

It’s springtime in the southern hemisphere and today we’re celebrating it with a mix from London-based DJ, Anna Rose (aka ANNX). 

We’ve been admiring Anna’s mixes for some time - her flawless mixing and the relentless collection of the best progressive & psytrance. We’re lucky enough to be able to share a recording of her set from this year’s Above Below Festival in Chiltern Hills in the UK. Anna played 7-9pm on The Beacon stage, and woweee it’s making us wish we were there to witness this set as the sun went down.

Rotations 34: ANNX

Welcoming London-based Moray to TSBU for their debut release, the ‘Celestial Drift’ EP. Three emotive and sophisticated tracks find a home on the label, and offer a glimpse into this prolific producer’s world.

Craig’s Dusty Brain is a deep and expansive journey; the mesmerising chorus drone repeatedly sucks in the listener and flings them out again. Atmospheric yet driving, this opening track wouldn’t feel out of place in the back catalogue of Simon Huxtable and Andy Pitman’s Deep Space Recordings.   

A more playful mood transpires in First Contact — the twinkling, alien-like call and response of the main synth line create a sense of curiosity and carefree.  

Reef Energy is the third and final piece in the trilogy. Its glittering atmospheres, 90s-inspired vocal and lead melodies which dance along freely culminate in making this perfect for the most euphoric dancefloor moments.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Phantom Power, Safar and Avarice, and labels such as the UK’s Crib Records and Australia’s Thunk Records, Moray simultaneously speaks the language of mid-late 90s progressive house and trance, and creates an energising perspective on the current progressive movement.

Our next mix is a pure gift in the form of a b2b from two of very well respected DJs based in Naarm, Toni Yotzi and Dawn Again.

Recorded live at Spincycle's party at Killing Time on 21 May this year, this set dives deep into the wonkiest corners of tech house for 2.5 hours.

Having just started their own party series, Dawn Sports, we can't wait to see what these two have in store for the future!

Rotations 36: Toni Yotzi & Dawn Again (Live at Spincycle 21.05.23)

Today's mix comes from an undeniably talented producer and DJ from Naarm, Cybernet.

With a sound that draw elements from 90s and 00s progressive and trance, Michael's productions caught our attention with the release of his track 'Exit Phase' with Willem on Goddezz (UK). Since then, his output has been plentiful, with releases on Meganesia and Abdul Raeva's Gestalt Records. 

We're thrilled to have Cybernet's distinctive sound palette find a home in our mix series via this meandering journey through downtempo, 90s tech house and progressive.

For this mix, the London-based @slushrecordsuk head has gifted us with an hour and a half of big, tough, outdoor festival progressive vibes - and all vinyl :)

Rotations 41: Lora Mipsum

Welcoming Barcelona-via-Naarm-based producer Xav / @xavxavp to the label with “In a Weird Cube”. After heavily rinsing Xav’s debut EP on DMO, we’re thrilled to present the artist’s subsequent release for your listening pleasure.

The weird, wonky and wonderful, are all characteristics synonymous with Xav’s already inimitable sound. Speak Louder follows suit, opening the EP with its wubby bassline and dubbed out chords. 

Pipeline exhibits a similar wonk to the opener, albeit picking up the pace. Skippy percussion and murky vocals make for a sinister mood; perfect for deep into the night. 

The EP takes a turn into a tripped out, downtempo domain with 2 Squared, while finally, Cube Tool closes things out with a sleezy, low slung tech house mood.

TSBU 14 // xav - in a weird cube EP [snippets]

Today we're thrilled to present a mix from dj and vinyl enthusiast, Lolo / @lolo-lolo-lolo-96. Laurent is half of dj duo @digabuna, and the pair also also run the amazing @coppiberlin studio. We were lucky enough to meet Laurent at Coppi a few weeks back - a weekly community session based in a warehouse in the East of Berlin. The project aims to create spaces and strengthen the community exchange of non-commercial underground music culture.

This mix shows a little taste of Laurent's diverse musical knowledge and influences - a fun and effortlessly mixed hour of percussive housey vibes. Laurent is currently based in Berlin, however plans to relocate to Naarm later this year & we're very much looking forward to it :)

Not constrained by genres, Dan skilfully moves through minimal, tech house, progressive house, techno, psytrance - you name it. The outcome is a lovely example of how to blend genres to create a cohesive sound - two hours of deep, rolling rhythms - enjoy :)

Marking our 15th release is the Silhouettes EP, the long-awaited debut of local Naarm producer WTP to The Space Between Us. We’re thrilled that through these four timeless tracks, the label finds a place within the incredible catalogue of releases from WTP.

Silhouettes is a further manifestation of WTP’s unwavering knack for creating expansive realms, perceptible through deep and hypnotic patterns, intricate percussion and weightless pads. Favouring analogue sounds over the crisp and clean, an organic quality gives life to the tracks — each living and breathing.

Building upon previous releases, Silhouettes is an exploration into the more energetic shades of the Naarm producer’s sound; each track featuring a liveliness within elements — whether chords, basslines or arpeggiated sounds. As much as the tracks propel onward, they offer restraint when called for. Driving, yet spacious and light; equally suited to the hazy dancefloor as they are to home listening.

With a soul that finds home alongside releases from the ‘golden era’ of progressive house and trance —  output from labels like Digital Structures, Vapour Recordings and Plastic Fantastic in the early 2000s — Silhouettes is an exercise in defying space and time. Inviting you to get lost, and find the ethereal world of WTP.
