Rotations Mixes

Our next guest mix is gifted to us by a very exciting artist called Crake, whose work focuses on the queer and experimental side of techno. Having recently moved from Meanjin to Naarm, Crake recorded this mix in December last year - a time when he was having complicated emotions about living in a city he was supposed to have moved away from almost eight months beforehand. Crake says this mix is a bit slower than what he normally does, and was intended to put the club into a more deep listening experience.

We are blessed to be joined by the wonderful, Birrarunga/Melbourne-based DJ Luv You / @djluvyou for Rotations Round 13. Ophelia aka DJ Luv You is the host of All Kinds of Joy on Skylab Radio, and one of the folk behind LUNA ( @luna_blessings )- a show on LYL Radio, party and mix series. Drawing from the moon's energy; LUNA is a space for sharing creations from womxn, queer and non-binary artists.  We've been keeping an eye on Ophelia for some time and have been so drawn to the playfulness and joy exuded in their mixes and live sets. This one is no different as Ophelia takes us through dreamy breakbeats, deep and groovy dancefloor fillers and left-field housey numbers.

Rotations Round 13: DJ Luv You

We warmly welcome our next guest, SPACE MAN (aka our friend Matthew Haynes) to Rotations Round! We are even luckier to host the first aural offering of SPACE MAN - a man who needs and appreciates space of all kinds. Matthew is one of the brains behind the Bad Taste House Collective ( @badtastehousecollective ) parties in Meanjin/Bris, and the label Esoteric Exports ( @esotericexports ). This all-vinyl mix treats us to a delightful journey through some of Matthew's enviable collection - a trip through ambience, downtempo, dub, house and more - all wrapped up in one silky, dreamy package that is synonymous with his style.

Rotations Round 14: SPACE MAN

It's with open arms that we welcome our first international guest, Dream Software @dreamsoftwarecorp (Bristol, UK).

Dream Software are a label and mix series, and host a radio show on Bristol's @1020radio.  Using a selection of balearic, down & up-tempo dream inducers, Dream Software Corp re-aligns neural networks with expert precision. We can safely say that since plugging in, our neural repertoire has been maximised for optimal fulfilment <3 (a visit to their instagram is advised for pure visual stimulation & website for merch + other hardware www.dreamsoftware.co.uk)

For this mix, Dream Software wanted to incorporate a theme of global unity, using various languages and a tribal touch to articulate this message.

We're delighted to share our next Rotations Round, from someone we've admired for quite some time now, the wonderful Eora/Sydney-based DJ Ivy ( @iv-dripp ) <3 Ivy hosts her show Thanks for Sharing on @nomadradiofm, which platforms many local artists. A listen through Ivy's impressive catalogue of mixes will show her ability to effortlessly weave through different moods, while always maintaining a beautiful, organic feel that consistently sounds fresh. This mix is exactly that - a dreamy, flowing trip to sooth your soul.

Rotations Round 16: Ivy

Our next guest mix is from our gifted friend and all round exceptional human, Zach Degnan aka Quincy Raw / @quincy_raw. Zach is one of the minds behind Brisbane/Meanjin-based label Pocketmoth, along with Iti Memon. The label has become known for its sonic diversity, and its focus on authenticity and connection. Some of our fondest dance floor memories in Brisbane have been while immersed in one of Zach and Iti's B2B sets :)

Zach said he used the recording of this mix as a self-healing session. Starting off free-flowing, soft and spacious, this two-hour mix builds so gently that before you even realise it, you're locked into a groove. 

"I guess I wanted to create a lush, comfortable, healing atmosphere with lots of little characters hiding in there (like some of the voices from Jimi, laurel halo, some more crime, actress tracks)"

Our next guest mix is gifted to us by Patrin (@patrinnn), who is one of the minds behind the Eora/Sydney-based audio journal Low End Theorists, and the beautiful label and mix series @theory-therapy - the latter having soundtracked many a day spent in lockdown. If you are in need of some soul-soothing, we highly recommend a dig through the @theory-therapy mix catalogue :) We are so excited that Daniel has joined us for Rotations Round, and especially excited to see him delve into some higher energy sounds that he's been enjoying lately. Xander is one half of much-loved label @housesinmotion, and curator of the super cute mix series which soundtracked our iso workouts @workitworkitout (keep it going post-iso?!). Bound by no single genre, Xander's selections are always exciting and diverse. With this mix, he treats us to a little slice of summer - dreamy breakbeats, floaty housey vibes and sensual disco bits and more! brb gonna sip pina-coladas by the pool. Elated to share our 20th mix with you, from none other than our beautiful friend and incredible DJ Jaime Forson (@missjaime) Jaime has been such a force throughout her time as a DJ - playing to dance floors in Australia, the UK and her spirit home - Japan. She played regularly at many Tokyo clubs - Oath, Contact, Vent, Red Bar, Bonobo and Tunnel, and also ran a monthly club night Side by Side. We're selfishly happy that Jaime is back in Aus (based in Meanjin/Brisbane), and we hope to see her down in clubs in Naarm very soon! 

This mix has been a while in the making and we couldn't be happier to share it with you! Techno, progressive, breaks and shows Jaime's love of percussive, rhythmic elements. Thank you Jaime for this mix <3

An hour or so of high octane Italo bangers and trancey numbers was recorded by Jack after returning from a vinyl dig with Norwegian enigma Telephones during his recent tour of Australia.

For this mix, Black Mannequin (@blackmannequin aka Iti Memon) has delivered a sonic mood board for his pre and post-EP sentiment. It’s a diverse selection of tracks, and is characterised by Iti’s always flawless mixing, and seamless tempo changes.

"I’ve woven together a lot of styles that inspire me; old, new and unreleased. There’s yet-to-be-heard Pocketmoth material, raw cuts from tracks I’ve been working on, and some field recordings layered with ambient textures I plucked from unfinished sessions on my hard drive.”

Rotations Round 06: Limestone Cowboy

We are ecstatic to invite Tantrum (Taylor Wilson / @taylorwilson-6 ) to our Rotations Round series. 

Having spent most weekends immersed in dance culture over the last decade, Taylor Wilson’s no stranger to the potential in a meaningful dancefloor experience. After a few turbulent bedroom attempts, Tantrum broke into the outside world with Camp Paprika at Rabbits Eat Lettuce in April last year, and has since supported Moomin at Pray Tell, played Fulcrum and had multiple trips down the M1 to play at her old home base at Elsewhere on the Gold Coast. When not behind the decks, you may know Taylor via her No Touchies brand - which serves to represent consent - for everybody.

Taylor delivers us a gorgeously considered mix of warm and lush electro, breaks and techno. It's ready for the largest of rooms and has been making us yearn for the club. <3

This mix has been kindly recorded by the lovely Charlie Stephens. It's a collection of recently released tracks he loves. Synonymous with Charlie's sound, it's world-influenced, chuggy, and always groovy. This mix will warm the coldest of dancefloors.

Welcoming the effervescent Girls in Hats (@girlsinhats) to our series. Meanjin-based rave aficionado and regular contributor at the QUIVR streaming space, Girls in Hats delivers us a gorgeous journey through emotion.

'This mix is an interweaving of playfulness and badass beats. Exploring the transient field of emotion, it ends on a melancholy tone; such is the nature of endings.'

Today we mark our 10th Rotations Round (the sun), and we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than with a mix from our first interstate guest, one of the bright minds behind the @neurocrankk parties in Naarm/Melb, Allure (aka Chris @allurein). After being blown away by Chris' mixes, it was clear to us that he's an incredible DJ with an ear for the most interesting sounds. For this mix, Chris has gifted us an absolutely epic, near two hour trip to the outer-realms and back again. He weaves through dreamy Italo-Disco, psychedelic downtempo, goa trance, and IDM - and even features some unreleased material from the other Neurocrank guys! Strap in for a hell of a ride <3

It's 2021, and we thought there's no better way to bring in the new year than with a mix from our dear friend and all round incredible human @benny_chiu 

Benny kindly recorded this for us last year just as the pandemic was kicking off, and we're so happy to finally share it <3 This mix weaves through dubbed out slow burners, cosmic dance floor cuts, and smoothed out lofi boogie jams, all translating beautifully to your holiday locale, office or loungeroom :) Channelling all the posi-vibes we need for the year ahead!
