Merchant w/ The Square Sun - January 2024

Boyd V is a music fanatic with a love for funk, boogie, disco, and electronic music from all corners of the world. Being based in Amsterdam and surrounded by a lot of good record stores, this mix consists of some recent finds, one home-made production and a few personal favourites like Jolley & Swain – Soul Street, creating a nice blend of different genres. 

Boyd V’s top 3:
1. Lis’a – Mich’e – Absolutely amazing house track I found recently. Case of love at first listen!
2. Alexis Laik – Danse, Danse, Danse – French funk record. Soft but beautiful. I love a good French synth-pop/disco/boogie record, and this is one of my favourites. It has got a nice instrumental version as well. 
3. Arthur Russel - In the Light – super deep jazz-funk track. A thirteen-minute journey into sound. Arthur Russel is an amazing artist, who unfortunately passed away at a young age (40). However, his musical legacy of beautiful music like this track remains for us to enjoy.

Koladance - Cherie (The Square Sun Edit)

Capra has an intrinsic devotion to resurrect the primal era of dance and clubbing music. With a distinct focus on music from the first part of the nineties, he strives to create melancholic trips with a raw edge. Contrary to his usual approach, this set tries to achieve the same but in a less club-oriented way. Less 4x4, more experimental sounds. Enjoy it while having a coffee and have a little dance (but don't let them notice)!

As the days get longer and the sun finally starts to show its face, we are thrilled to announce the latest guest on the Islander Cast series: The Square Sun.

With a vinyl release on Martino Edits of an underground Disco heater as well as his own EP featuring two house bangers, his productions showcase his genuine talent and love of music.

The Square Sun also regularly hosts some of the best selectors around at his Square Sun Sessions, which are a much listen for those in the know. His YouTube channel also showcases his digging ability, with regular uploads of genre-spanning rare gems that can't be found anywhere else

This mix is eclectic and wide ranging, covering boogie, latin, house and everything in between - a must-listen!

Islander Cast (#11) - The Square Sun

Aram is a DJ from Amsterdam, who truly adores the boogie vibes of the early 80s, regardless of its country of origin, as long as there's a funky bassline somewhere. He also holds a deep appreciation for the afro synth of that era. As the night progresses, Aram transitions to spinning more house records, characterized by percussion, disco divas, and dreamy keys. The common denominator? It's got to be funky. One memorable evening, Aram walked into a festival tent where a departing group remarked, "It was too funky." To this day, he remains puzzled by that comment.

Isha Faith is an upcoming talent in the Dutch DJ scene, having started her career during the pandemic. Her first gig was at a festival that she organized herself, and since then, she has been on a roll. With gigs at renowned clubs like PIP in The Hague and Soenda in Utrecht, Isha Faith is quickly making a name for herself. Her signature style is not necessarily bound by genres, but you can expect a lot of harder, high-energy sounds from her, ranging from hard groove to bubbling to trance, which always gets the crowd moving. If you're looking for a fresh and exciting DJ who knows how to get a party started, Isha Faith is the one to watch.

Pedro Rocha & Splash - Eu Queria (The Square Sun Edit)

Neef Deef began selecting records in public ca. 2008, with a keen interest in the sound of young Jamaica of 1968; Early Reggae and Rocksteady. From 2010 to 2017, he and Rob Alpha hosted Rocksteady nights in Eindhoven. Over time, Neef Deef expanded his collection to include Soul, Funk, Latin, and Brazilian music. Now semi-retired, he returns to the decks for a few special occasions.

Discos Fuego from Santa Ana, El Salvador.
He is fascinated by the sound of unknown 60’s and 70’s music specially from Central America. Often on the road and trips back home he continues to look for old dusty forgotten records since 2011.

Bibiche, a DJ from Amsterdam, has a passion for disco that has evolved over the years to include various early 90s house genres, especially Italo (dream) house, deep house, and Latin house. Her heart also beats for Balearic and Brazilian sounds. It was during the Covid pandemic that she first stepped behind the decks, during her own organized festival weekend.Since then, Bibiche has continued to spin records, still evolving and refining her skills. This set is a blend of many genres that she likes, ranging from chill vibes to high-energy dancefloor bangers. However, it's the latter that she loves most.

An avid lover of soulful, sun-filled dance music from around the world, JOSH FB’s eclectic sets are sizzling with energy as he aims to heat up dance floors and make people smile while they move. 

Josh’s loves of record digging and zouk are well documented, as shown by his appearance on the prestigious ‘My Analog Journal’ channel, as well as his work with his record label, collective, clubnight and YouTube channel ‘Discothèque Tropicale’. Who’s debut release ‘Manix - Voyager’ has garnished support across the world including from his biggest inspirations Antal, Hunee, & Palms Trax.

However Antillean music is only one piece of the puzzle, as Josh has a wide and varied taste which he employs in his sets. On top of the typical range of Afro/Caribbean music Josh has become known for advocating, you can expect an eclectic mix of euphoric global dance music from raï to Brazilian axé, italo, latin house & synth pop, as well as a diverse selection of electronic music from prog to trance and techno to name a few.

Janet Martinez - Todo Lo Que Pasa (The Square Sun Edit)

The release is an EP with two tracks from Lazers & Stuff: “Tumble UP” and “Jack The Beats”. This is the long-awaited follow-up to the previously released “Bagels For A Hangover Lunch” EP from Lazers & Stuff.

The EP is inspired by "Bubblegum": African pop music from the 80s and 90s. This genre originated within the social response to the damage caused by colonialism and apartheid. In these years music offered an escape from reality, so spending money on records was not uncommon. As a result, labels acquired more capital and the music industry received a huge boost. But music was more than an escape, it could provide a platform for political opinion. At the same time, local artists began mixing international music trends with their sounds, opinion and synthesizers. This is how Bubblegum was created: full of cheezy synth lines and hidden political opinion.

To give the genre a boost, Lazers & Stuff released a Bubblegum EP. He used the old cheezy synthesizers and put everything in a new jacket. What can you expect? Catchy melodies and slick bass lines
