After a few months break, now feels like the perfect time to release the next Deep Mind Music mix. The next entry comes from London-based DJ Gyorgy Ono, who has put together a winding, rich and pensive 2 hour journey, which takes us through strange landscapes, aural curiosities, blissful reveries and back again. 

In January Gyorgy shared Aphex Twin’s Stone In Focus on Facebook, and we started talking about the power of this track, and ambient music in general, to connect you with a feeling of deep nostalgia for a state of being long forgotten, that familiarity which creates a universal connection between listeners. I asked him to contribute a Deep Mind Music mix following this conversation, as this philosophy underpins much of my exploration with ambient and drone music, I’m fascinated with its ability to voice an expression of feelings which transcend our known experience of reality. 

I feel Gyorgy’s mix has captured the mood shifts we’re all feeling at the moment on a daily basis whilst isolating from the world in lockdown. Voicing the instability, the twinges of collective grief, and surreal calm we are all oscillating between in the ups and downs of home life. 

The mix is in two parts, the first half sets the scene, exploring different pockets of sound and feelings, sketching out spaces and landscapes. In the second half the sonics gloriously unspool and slowly smear, swirling in a thick haze around us as Gyorgy brings in spiralling piano arpeggios, zithers suspended in mid-air, and misty strums of guitar. 

This mix has such a cohesion in form and richness in detail that it summons a vision of a fully formed sonic world, somewhere distinctly other and yet strangely familiar. I know I’ll be getting lost in this mix for many months to come. In every sense of the phrase, a deep mind trip.
