Toward Morning

“Wagon Wheel” is the first cover we’ve recorded. Originally by Old Crow Medicine Show (and appropriate copyrights to them, as well as to Bob Dylan), and made somewhat popular by Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish fame. This version is our little twist on it, with Cara, Charlie, and Phil each taking a verse and everyone chiming in for the chorus.
Here’s how it goes:
Heading down south to the land of the pines, I’m thumbin’ my way to North Caroline,
Starin’ down the road, I swear God, I see headlights.
Well I made it down the coast in seventeen hours, I’m pickin’ me a bouquet of dogwood flowers.
Hoping for Raleigh, I can see my baby tonight.

Runnin’ from the cold up in New England, I was born to be a fiddler in an old time string band.
My baby plays guitar, I pick a banjo now.
Oh the North Country winters keep-a-gettin’ me down, lost my money playin’ poker so I had to up and leave.
But I ain’t turnin’ back to living that old life no more.

Heading to the south out of Roanoke, caught a trucker out of Philly, had a nice long toke.
But he’s heading west from the Cumberland Gap to Johnson City, Tennessee
Oh, I’ve gotta get a move on fit for the sun, heard my baby calling my name and I know that she’s the only one.
If I die in Raleigh, at least I will die free.

The Treacherous French are an eclectic indie rock band hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area. The songs they write are catchy yet complex, while staying true to their indie, blues, country, and alt-rock roots. The lineup consists of a group of four multi-instrumentalists from differing backgrounds ranging from folk rock to punk rock to dance rock to Celtic jazz folk fusion. The standard lineup of rock band instruments is well represented: bass, guitar, drums, vocals, keys - but if you listen closely, you may hear some twists as well: accordion, mandolin, harmonica, glockenspiel, washboard, kalimba - and this blend of styles and instrumentation is what makes The Treacherous French what it is.
