The day has come. I have finally bought a pedal that is meant to be used with a mic. I have always used guitar pedals for vocals and that never treated me well (quite understandably...). So, to celebrate, I thought I would do a live version of Only Time. It's been 4 years since I wrote it... I hope you enjoy this version 😊

Meet Me

This is me and my student Maegan Slinger covering 'Say Something' by A Great Big World. We did this as a multi-track recording on pro tools within her singing lessons to give her an experience of what it's like to make records; and I'm sure you'll agree it turns out she has a great recording voice. 
For the fellow guitar geeks out there, you'll hear that I built up the guitar parts bit by bit and I recorded them all with my Epiphone Supernova with a bit of crunch (which you can hear when I strum slightly too hard). Unfortunately, at the time the guitar could have done with being restrung as the intonation was a bit out. However, it is what it is and I feel with the build up of guitar parts and Maegan's excellent vocal delivery, we managed to capture a great amount of emotion to go with the lyrics.

For this song I used my 'Three Option Songwriting' method with @elliecarpendaleuk as she was experiencing writers block. Essentially, I present 3 options for absolutely everything to do with the song (Song Subject, Key, Tempo, Tonality, Chords, Rhythm, Lyrics etc), and the student has to continually choose from one of the 3 options presented to them. Eventually, a whole song is then created and I pre-produce the song as we go along. We then recorded the song which I produced and mixed and what you hear is what we came up with. Ellie Carpendale - Why Oh Why

My student @lorrainestewartmusic (who was 12 at the time) came to me and had written the verse and pre-chorus to this song. Although what I felt I heard was absolutely incredible for someone of her age; I felt the song needed a chorus. I gave her a week to go away and try and come up with something but she was struggling; so at this point I used my 'Three Option Songwriting' method with Lorraine to create a chorus (where I gave Lorraine 3 options for a repeated line to use in the chorus, where she chose 'Meant To Shine' in turn giving the song its title). I also wrote the electric guitar part you hear and taught it to Lorraine so she could record it herself and she did a fantastic job. Everything else was programmed by myself intending to try and give the song a modern ambient feel. The chords and lyrics to this song were completely written by my student @lissynicholson. I then produced and mixed the song, where I played electric guitar parts to give the song more depth and got Lissy to sing harmonies. Essentially, I present 3 options for absolutely everything to do with the song (Song Subject, Key, Tempo, Tonality, Chords, Rhythm, Lyrics etc), and the student has to continually choose from one of 3 options presented to them. Eventually, a whole song is then created and I pre-produce the song as we go along. We then recorded the song which I produced and mixed and what you hear is what we came up with. At the time she was getting a bit of a nudge from all angles (me, her parents etc) about practising and writing more, so we chose that as the song subject which made the process a good laugh. Brooke also likes country music so we tried to give the song that kind of feel. The male vocal harmony and electric guitar parts you hear are me which we felt would thicken things up a bit.
