Bensley – A name which has remained a talking point across the genre since the announcement of his exclusive signing to Ram Records. Heralding from the city of Toronto, known for being a hotbed for the drum & bass genre, Bensley has stood as an anomaly.

In its 20 year plus history, never before has the RAM imprint created a journey as unique as Bensley’s. If you scour the internet, you won’t find one single release, an upload or even any previous history on the producer. Yet all it took was a one single demo to attract the attention of the acclaimed electronic music label. The RAM HQ was instantly enveloped by Bensley’s technically adept and musical personality, with the demos blowing the roof off the Hornchurch office on first listen. 

Bensley ‘let the music do the talking’… Quite literally. On first listen to ‘Fandango’, a precursor for what’s yet to come, you’ll instantly tune in to why he was snapped up so quickly. With Zane Lowe pedestalling the first glimpse into Bensley’s diverse soundscape, ‘Fandango’ was a precursor for this forthcoming debut. ‘Next Generation’ is a bold move; with drum & bass being a genre which has certainly stood the test of time, newcomers have incredibly big shoes to fill. However, Bensley incorporates an innovative and incredibly intricate set of production skills to hold a title of his own.

But what can you expect from an artist who was signed after sending a single demo to revered label head Andy C. That’s despite having no previous releases or having any other music available to stream online. He was somewhat of a mystery.
‘Fandango’ was that track. And it was premiered as a world exclusive on leading tastemaker Radio1, which followed with support from the likes of Mistajam on 1xtra, as well as DJs on both Kiss and XFM.

Already demonstrating his widespread appeal with just one track, his air of mystery is now about to be broken. He’s definitely an anomaly; being only nineteen and having impressed so many people.

‘Next Generation’ is a 10-track journey through an impressively diverse soundscape. Whether it’s half-time breakdowns or the incorporation if cross genre-pollination it shows an astounding ability which will not go unrecognised.
From the opening bars of ‘Wildfire’, to the softly spoken pads and atmospheric note arpeggios of ‘Rain Dance’, then wrapped up by aptly named closing track ‘Aftermath’, there’s no denying Bensley’s masterful artistry.

Title-track ‘Next Generation’ leads you by the hand with snippets of humanistic sample, flowing in and out of its construct. It’s built upon by striking note progressions, a relaying of patterns which chop and change the mix. Carefully placed subs add impact, with emphasis given on each break, carrying the track forward down a steep drop with each slab of bass.

Drawing together a dizzying and fresh array of new sounds, this album indicates why Bensley is a forerunner within the new generation of music comers. Its representative of the fast paced technological setting of music production he grew up around; it also proves that Bensley is able to tap into dimensions which are often unheard of in other bodies of work.

Technique’s annual summer compilation has become one of the highlights of the label’s release schedule and this year’s edition is no exception.

Technique Summer 2016 features 37 tracks from across the drum & bass spectrum hand picked by Drumsound & Bassline Smith.

The label bosses themselves roll through with the fluid jungle of the Solah-laced “Cover Our Eyes”, the no-holds-barred funk of “Rise of the Black Panther” and their epic dubwise collaboration with Digital, “First World Problem”.

And then there are the big name cameos from artists not normally seen under the Technique banner. Brookes Brothers and Danny Byrd team up with the uplifting drive of “Climb High”, matched in hands-in-the-air power by the euphoric piano of The Prototypes’ “Don’t Let Me Go”. J Majik recruits 78° and Louie Cabrera for “Day I Left” and “Elastic” respectively. And the mighty DJ SS drops an emotively claustrophobic killer in the form of “Expression”.

Of course, the regular regiment of Technique soldiers are present and correct too. Tantrum Desire delivers the tech atmospherics of “Tesoro”, while Kronology subverts the big-room sound with the unpredictable twists and turns of “Everyday”. L Plus backs up rumbling bass and popping beats with entwined chord patterns in “Invincible”. Plus Document One show two different sides to their character, with the jazz funk vibe of “Klaxon” and the paranoid sci-fi of “Say What”.

And we’re nowhere near covering everything this album has to offer. From the jungle tear-out of Brian Brainstorm’s “Badman Selector” to the minimal magic of Oder’s “Mesmerize”, via the liquid purity of Salaryman’s “He Knows”, this is a journey that needs to be experienced. Any selection that takes you straight from Fade’s “Disco Ball” into Conspire’s “Glare of Brass” then to Salaryman’s “Synthesized Melancholia” is making a statement about the strength in depth of the D&B genre right now.

If all that wasn’t enough, all the tracks are featured on two continuous mixes by Kronology.

The first album sampler features Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s “Rise of the Black Panther” and is available now exclusively in the Beatport store and from the Technique shop from June 10. The second sampler includes Document One’s Klaxon and you can get your hands on in from June 24 in the Technique shop. The full album is released on 1 July but you can pre-order it now on iTunes and all other stores.

The Upbeats’ unique and organic take on 170bpm+ bass music has seen them make their home in the highest echelons of dance music worldwide. Known for their organic and natural sounding drums, The Upbeats are a pillar in the DNB community. The duo have collaborated with stalwarts such as Noisia, Shapeshifter Bad Company,Foreign Beggars, Mara TK, and Mefjus to name a few. In September 2014, their collaborative EP with Shapeshifter, ‘Bloodstream’, reached no.1 in the NZ iTunes Charts 2 days after being released.

They have released on major dnb labels including RAM Records, Virus, Blackout and Vision Recordings along with remixing heavy weights such as Ed Rush & Optical, Black Sun Empire, Noisia, andBad Company. Their album ‘Beyond Reality’ released on Vision records in 2013 propelled them to the highest ranks of drum and bass globally. 2014 saw them remix Submotion Orchestra’s single, ‘Trust Lust’, for Counter Records/Ninja Tune which was widely praised inside and outside of the dnb world. In August 2015, they released a new collaborative EP, ‘Dead Limit’ with Noisia, which turned the entire scene on its head. The title track won them best track at the DNB Arena Awards and quickly became a modern classic. It is almost impossible to go to a rave and not hear the track being played multiple times during a night. Over 2016, they released the first two segments of their latest album ‘De-Evolution’. The final segment, Part III, was  released in Q1 of 2017 to much acclaim. In September 2017, the highly anticipated Re-Evolution (the remix package featuring Black Sun Empire, Emperor, Malux, Memtrix, Annix and Aggressor Bunx) was released. Now, in November 2017, The Upbeats have released their first 4 track EP with Critical Music - the PUNKS EP. It has received heavy rotation from all of their peers, and has been played numerous times on BBC Radio 1, and has also seen them do a 2 hour special for Critical Music on Rinse FM. 

2018 saw them release a 4 track EP (The Pack) with fellow New Zealanders ‘Truth’. The EP sat at the top of the Beatport charts for many weeks. It also saw a resulting tour of Australia and New Zealand where 90% of the 18 shows sold out. The Upbeats have also just released another EP on Critical Music, which has found rotation on BBC Radio 1. The Upbeats have now also had repeated Summer residencies on New Zealand’s own George FM. 2018 saw them release the first 2 releases in the series of their highly anticipated ‘No Sleep ’Til’ EP. They travelled to Japan and Iceland with a bunch of the most respected artists in drum and bass (Noisia, Culture Shock, Halogenix, Emperor), and also worked with Goth Trad and the highly respected DJ Kentaro in Tokyo where they were guests of the Red Bull Studio there. The release is out on the 7th September 2018. 2019 has already been a big year with the release of AA side ‘Sweeper / Disorder and a ‘No Sleep Til… New Zealand’ in the pipeline.

Clocking up over a hundred shows a year The Upbeats have played at major festivals worldwide including EDC (Vegas), Pukkelpop (Belgium), Urban Art Forms (Vienna), Supersonic (India), Exit Festival (Serbia), Outlook Festival (Croatia) and are a staple at the famous Noisia Invites shows and tours, Northern Bass (NZ), Boomtown (UK), Glastonbury (UK), Shambhala (Canada), Origin (Australia).
