Michael Pollan, the award winning food and agriculture writer, sits with host Leah Rose to discuss his latest piece "The Trip Treatment" from the February 9, 2015 issue of The New Yorker. 

Pollan's article takes a comprehensive look at the renaissance of psychedelic research and the doctors who are currently giving high doses of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, to people who are dying of cancer and battling addiction.

Alex Orsola is grateful. She’s grateful for her life, family, and friends. She describes herself as a affectionate caretaker, someone people can lean on for support. To her loved ones, she’s a ray of sunlight.

But one experience challenged her joyous outlook. It had the potential to either deepen her gratitude for life, or derail her perspective completely. The tables turned: suddenly she could no longer be the caretaker--she needed others to support her. 

In the first episode of Outlook, a podcast about the different lenses through which people see the world, Orsola demonstrates the power of taking stock of what you have, even if it feels like the world is caving in. She dares you to be grateful too, even if you don’t have the sunniest of dispositions.

It begs the question-- is being grateful for the small things the key to overcoming life’s bigger obstacles? Orsola thinks so. Scientific research says it is, too. The Greater Good Science Center (GGSC), of the University of California, Berkeley, writes that “people who practice gratitude consistently report a host of benefits.” These benefits range from the physical, like lower blood pressure and stronger immune systems, to the emotional, like greater generosity, compassion, and optimism. And research from GGSC says gratitude is not innate -- it can be learned. But is “practicing gratitude” as easy as it sounds?

“Happiness is a choice, absolutely,” Orsola says. “But not everyone is strong enough to remember that. Sometimes we have to refocus and recharge to remember that it’s your choice.” In the first episode of the podcast, Orsola’s ability to chose happiness over despair is put to the test.
