"This song came so close to being scrapped so many times. At one point, I proposed it as a song to Mike while we were in our "Do Me Eyes" phase, but he didn't care for it (probably because I'd shown him, yet again, another song I'd written in the key of A minor). I wrote it at a time when I was pushing myself by adding more steamy, sexual themes to my music in a similar vein to Interpol's "Take you on a Cruise" and Silversun Pickups' "Catch and release." Sexual elements were pretty lacking in the songs I'd written up to this point. Other sexually charged songs that I wrote around this time included "I know I will," "Ishtar," "Intimacy," and "The night's still young." 

The true inspiration behind this song was the friendzone meme-cycle that was all the rage on reddit and other platforms in the early 2010s. I had already been married for a few years by this time, and to my recollection, I had never actually experienced being "friendzoned" by any women I pursued (though it's possible I'm either in denial about it or remember things with rose-tinted glasses). However, the concept of "friendzone-ship" held a peculiar fascination for me, probably because of my morbid fear of abandonment or romantic sentiments regarding unrequited love. 

My relative detachment from this song made it an easy choice as something to put forward to showcase my work, and as such, was one of the first songs I'd composed in it's entirety for this project. So it was kind of surprising to find that it became one of my favorites. This was due, in part, to the jangly guitar parts I improvised one day that reminded me of Television, The Strokes, and Arctic Monkeys, and the two shitty layers of vocals that gave it an almost dream-pop feeling."
