The New Regime is a one-man band fronted and created by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s youngest inductee of all time, Ilan Rubin. The latest album, Heart Mind Body & Soul, which was released in four parts over the last year, is now being rereleased in its deluxe form.

For Rubin, the most challenging aspect of recording music has nothing to do with writing every song himself or playing all the instruments. It’s about finding the time to record and tour between his work with two established bands and major touring entities — Nine Inch Nails, which was inducted into the Rock Hall this year, and Tom DeLonge’s Angels & Airwaves. 

For more than a decade, Rubin has drummed for NIN, starting his tenure in the band at the end of his teenage years. Since 2011, he’s also served as a drummer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist in DeLonge’s band. Scheduling his own shows around these commitments has been difficult — but, in 2015, Rubin found a yearlong window on the heels of a two-year world tour with NIN. That’s when The New Regime was first able to tour extensively, supporting major acts including Muse, The Killers, Juliette Lewis, Alice In Chains, The Used, and more. He’d also begun work on Heart Mind Body & Soul, The New Regime’s third full-length, which was quickly picked up by RED Music, now The Orchard, upon completion. 

“People digest music differently and much quicker today than they ever have,” Rubin says, explaining one reason why he chose to look at the album like a chaptered book. “I felt like it would be doing the songs a disservice by releasing everything at once, especially since people seem to enjoy digesting music in small pieces.” While catering to the demands of the music-listening public, Rubin refuses to create vapid, predictable pop tunes to increase his mainstream appeal. 

Heart Mind Body & Soul is anthemic, infectious, and innovative. The title track is a euphoric, unabated rock track colored with bracing guitars and a soaring chorus. “Surreal Disaster,” which at times sounds like a hybrid of Duran Duran and the Strokes, opens with lusciously harmonic wall of vocals before building into a decadent groove. “Sweet Kind of Suffering,” on the other hand, is a slow-burning serenade that haunts with strings, organs, and a transfixing bass line.

“I like everything I’ve done, but this feels like a new beginning,” Rubin said at the time of the album’s initial release. “It feels fresh. I’ve really tried to focus on writing multi-layered songs. If something doesn't have a deeper meaning that you didn't know was there, what makes it worth more than a handful of listens? I want the listener to keep discovering new elements and come back for more.” 

In addition to drawing inspiration from Jeff Buckley, The Police and — yes — Nine Inch Nails, Rubin continues to follow the anything-goes spirit of his primary influences, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Queen. As a result, the broad combination of sounds The New Regime elicits is vaguely familiar yet always marked with Rubin’s modernized stamp. “I have so many influences, from classical composers to Depeche Mode, and I see every project as an opportunity to do something different,” says Rubin. “I never want to repeat myself.”

Rubin revels in delivering the unexpected. While he’s a sucker for a strong hook, he inserts just enough dissonance to provide atmosphere and contrast. He won’t hesitate to interrupt a sunny melody with a mournful guitar line — or weave a reflective arpeggio into a pumped-up, celebratory melody. The same goes for Rubin’s lyrics, which are often pensive despite the propulsive rhythm they’re enveloped in. 

“The songs all reflect my take of what is going on these days with people and their relationships with one another,” Rubin says. “In life, very little fits neatly into a box. Nothing is characterized by one shade or one emotion. Feeling melancholic doesn't mean that there aren't glimmers of hope.”

 Living Colour is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1984. Led by guitarist Vernon Reid, the band's lineup solidified in the mid-80's w/ Corey Glover (vocals), Will Calhoun (drums) and Muzz Skillings (bass). Stylistically, the band's music is a creative fusion influenced by free jazz, funk, hard rock and heavy metal. Their lyrics range from the personal to the political, in some of the latter cases attacking Eurocentrism and racism in America.

The band’s debut album, “Vivid,” was released in 1988 on Epic Records. The album reached #6 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and was later certified double platinum by the RIAA. It featured “Cult of Personality,” a #13 hit on the Billboard 200 Singles chart as well as the Top 40 hit, “Glamour Boys.” “Cult of Personality” went on to earn the band their first Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.

In 1990 the band's second full-length album, “Time's Up,” was released and reached #13 on the Billboard 200 while certifying gold. It won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Album and featured guest appearances by Queen Latifah, Little Richard, Doug E. Fresh, Maceo Parker and James Earl Jones.

Due to creative differences, Skillings left the band in the summer of 1992, only to be replaced by session veteran and SugarHill Gang bass player Doug Wimbish.

“Stain,” their third studio album, was released in 1993 by Epic. Reaching #26 on the Billboard 200, the album had a much heavier and aggressive sound, containing elements of thrash metal and industrial music while receiving a Grammy nomination for 'Leave It Alone'.

After a split in 1995, Living Colour returned in the Dec 2000 and began recording “Collideøscope” in late 2002. Released in 2003, the album featured aggressive lyrics, with many of the songs about the September 11 attacks. It also contained cover versions of AC/DC's “Back in Black” and The Beatles' “Tomorrow Never Knows.”

Their first release on Megaforce Records, “The Chair in the Doorway,” was issued in 2009 and reached #159 on the Billboard 200 charged by the single 'Behind The Sun'

In 2013, the band celebrated the 25th anniversary of 'Vivid' w/ a world tour crossing North and South Americas, Europe, and Japan including the Soundwave festival in Australia.

The root of Living Colour's next album, came from a performance of Robert Johnson's "Preachin' Blues" at the 100th Anniversary Birthday celebration at the Apollo in New York City. To be released in the fall of 2016, ‘Shade’ is the sound of a band coming to terms with its shadows and light,” says founder Vernon Reid. “From the blue pulpit of Robert Johnson to the mean red streets of Brooklyn to the golden lure of Hollywood, ‘Shade’ is the next chapter of a unique American journey.”

OKeh short history: 

OKeh was founded by Otto K. E. Heinemann when he set up his own recording studio and gramophone record pressing plant in New York City in September 1918. Heinemann formed the name of the record label "OKeh", from his initials.  OKeh began by issuing popular songs, dance numbers, and vaudeville skits similar to the fare of other labels, but Heineman also wished to experiment with music for audiences neglected by the larger record companies. OKeh produced lines of recordings in German, Czech, Polish, Swedish, and Yiddish for the USA's immigrant communities. In 1920, Ralph Peer's recordings by African-American blues singer Mamie Smith were a surprise smash hit for Okeh. The company perceived the significant, little-tapped market for blues and jazz by African American artists. Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Bix Beiderbecke are only a few names of jazz greats that have recorded for the label. By 1926 Columbia Records bought the label and kept it running into the 60's with jazz and R&B recordings. 

In 1994, Sony Music reactivated the OKeh label as a new-age Blues label. Okeh's first new signings included Keb' Mo, Popa Chubby, and Little Axe. By 2000, the Okeh label was again retired, but in 2013 it will see its re-launch as a jazz label once again.
