My name is Ines and I live in Freiburg. I got my first record from my brother when I was 17 (an EP by Andrew Ashong). Shortly afterwards I bought two turntables plus a mixer for 300 euros - a really good deal. Since then I've been collecting records from different genres and in the beginning I played almost funk, soul and house. In the meantime, at least in a club context, I also like to play (faster) techno, break-beat and house. Since last summer, I've had a radio show twice a month with the Mystery Radio Club collective, where we mainly play jazz, funk, soul, Brazil, boogie, etc. Besides doing the show on the radio we have also organised parties in Freiburg as a group of friends. Another collective I am part of is SYLP. As a collective we organise parties and invite DJs from Freiburg and other cities.

When I started DJing in Freiburg, I had no connection to other female DJs. I have the feeling that this has changed a lot in the last 2-3 years. Now I hear more and more that many female friends are interested in DJing and are already playing really nice sets. I would be very happy if there were an increasing number of female DJs with whom I could share my interest in music and my interest in DJing. Another topic that keeps me busy is producing music. I have the feeling that the producer world is still a big buddy business. I know almost men in the (extended) circles of friends who produce music and most of the music I own on records is produced by men. I think for men, especially in the genres of beats, house, electronic music, producing at a younger age has already become somewhat established and it takes (at least for me personally) self-confidence/energy to join the circles that have been producing music since they were 16.  Nevertheless, I have a good feeling that a lot will also happen in the producing world in the near future and that more and more diverse creative circles will emerge. I hope for myself and for other women that they will not be discouraged from producing music. It is never too late to start.

1. We absolutely loved your mix! May we ask what your main inspirations are and started collecting and playing music? 

So happy that you loved it! There were two occasions where I had a musical experience that completely blew my little mind. The first one: I heard Kraftwerk’s ‘The Man Machine’. I’d gotten it as a birthday present from my Aunt on my 13th birthday, she’d gifted it to me on the promise “This will change your life.” It actually really did. My Mom had a really thumping stereo system at the time and I remember so clearly just sitting in the middle of our living room, on the floor, being totally annihilated by sounds I’d never heard before. Every music-obsessive has one of these spark-to-gasoline moments that ignites a flame in you, and this was mine. I instantly bought everything they’d ever made and indoctrinated myself with synthesizers. 1978 had never sounded so new, but also never further away. I honestly just stopped consuming anything new. This kick started a so far life-long obsession with digging for music. I was constantly searching for similar music. Eventually I got really into early electronics and minimal wave, which then led to Italo-disco of course, and suddenly and quite by coincidence hit a wall that changed everything again for me: disco and the beginnings of house music.
