Dear Thi Anh,thank you very much for your personal answer.  I always suffered of the fact, that I learned to late the piano. And than, when I studied my profession, not music, in the 80s  I only had a guitar in my students room. I only could play  some cords without technic. One of my best friends made poems. I could feel his words. Then, suddenly came a melody and I tried cords with the guitar, the first songs. It came by heart, not by musical expertise. Don't worry to start again. It's like bicycle, you have learned it in youth and stopped it for many years, you will drive again after a little time of adaptation.     I think, like me, more than half of the life, chronological, is done. So I try to do my work on one side, on the other side I try to do thinks my heart is burning for. Perhaps there is a inner voice, which wants to express together with the guitar?  And our soul, I think, is timeless, so it doesn't depend on age. The Session

There's strange. And then there's weird. And then there's Sun Ra. Imagine, if you can or will, a 27-piece (or thereabouts) atonal anarchic jazz ensemble (the Arkestra) featuring at various times a bassoon played with a trumpet mouthpiece, African dancers, and a fire-eater. Imagine further that this assemblage and its man-of-mystery leader could actually make this stuff accessible and enjoyable! 
That was Sun Ra. Those of us in Philly knew him a bit better than other places, for he lived here (cheaper to drive the band to gigs in NYC than to live there, some things haven't changed) in a big old house in the Germantown section. From what I heard the house was as unorthodox as its resident maestro. If he'd been white nobody would have hesitated to call it a commune.
You don't "cover" an artist like Ra, all you can do is let his interplanetary anarchy react with the portions of your soul akin to it, and be prepared to abandon all preconceptions while recording and mixing the results. Just so have I done. A ton of saxes, several clarinets of various registers, flute stand-ins: piano, organ, a little synth, and the bass: and my dozen-odd African percussion section. If I were doing this live, even with a band of multi-instrumentalists, I'd need a band the size of the Arkestra itself.
Sun Ra passed on in 1993 to wherever self-professed Saturnians go when they depart this plane: but longterm saxman Marshall Allan has kept the Arkestra running. Go here for the latest: sunraarkestra.com  The site contains NO COOKIES! Clearly good developments in more than music are at work here!

The Eclectic Collective -- composition
 
This song started with JJ during one of his late Saturday night composition sessions, where he came up with the idea on his synth. He laid down some great organ and electric piano for the rest of us to play with. Ken was first up with his lively, raucous drums. He and I did our back and forth with the rhythm section until it was solid, though. Then Stephen laid in his dirty, rawkin' rhythm guitar to give it an extra foundation. Finally, Tez put the icing on the cake with his monster soloing throughout. 
  Of course, every great song needs a great producer. In this case, Tez did the honors in a very expert manner. We wanted Stephen (Texmex Shaman) on this, too, of course, but he is just now getting settled into his new abode, and was in flux while we were making this one. He'll be back with The Eclectic Collective next week, though. 
  This is an example of Eclectic Collective teamwork. It came together relatively quickly, which means we were all having fun doing it. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

The Eclectic Collective -- composition

This song began, as so many of ours do, with JJ coming up with the skeleton of it on his electric piano, organ, and synth during one of his Saturday night jam sessions. He originally laid down a bass line for it, too, which might be better than what Josh came up with, But he was kind enough to let Josh in on it, too, adding his four string fretless bass on top of Ken's intricate, lively drums.

  Once the rhythm section was complete, it was time for Stephen and Tez to add their guitar magic to the mix, too. They both laid down some thrilling guitar lines throughout. Josh lastly added the spooky synth theremin you hear throughout.

  When it was all finished and in the can, we asked Stephen to mix it for us, which he did in a professional manner. He also added the creepy sound effects you hear throughout, as well. 

  This song is an example of how the Eclectic Collective can take an idea from one of us, and make it grow into a monster. Speaking of monsters, we decided to release this a day early to coincide with the holiday. Happy Halloween from The Eclectic Collective! This song began with David, who wrote it on the guitar, synth, and bass over a programmed beat he created. He and Josh met more than two months ago and decided to do a collaboration, based on mutual enjoyment of and respect for each other's music. Dave had this song pretty much fleshed out, although it was still a skeleton when he offered it to Josh, who, of course, got the rest of the Eclectic Collective involved.

Dave asked us all to compose our own parts for the song, so we all got to work right away doing that. We all realized that the first order of business would be to get a real beat on this, so Ken accomplished that task with some dynamic, Eastern inspired drums and percussion, which he plays throughout the song. JJ then stepped in and added his best eastern flute magic. Stephen was next with the perfect-vibe sitar you hear in the first two sections.

Josh came next to add his five-string fretless bass to the mix, augmenting David's high, staccato bass with his deep, low tone bass. Then, for the third section, where David's Gilmore-esque guitar solo resides, Josh drops out, allowing for Dave's awesome bass playing in that section. However, Josh does come in again towards the end, in the final section, too. Also, in that section, Tez dropped an augmented, harmonic, electric fire, complementary guitar part. Then, David's frequent collaborator and friend Ron added some well blended, ethereal synth to the first section, too.

Once we had the instrumental parts pretty much laid down, we began to discuss getting a woman to sing on this, as David was inspired by The Great Gig in the Sky, by Pink Floyd, and we all agreed. Who we found to do it actually blew all of our minds. JJ, being familiar with her music, contacted Elpi first, and we were all lucky enough that she agreed to do it. Having heard Mediterranean music all her life in Greece, she tapped into what her husband said were her "ancient Greek roots," for her spectacular vocal performance. She finds all the modal notes and places them perfectly throughout her sections.

But before we were done, Mark came through with some really striking talking drum parts in the first two sections, too. Once we had everything in the can, David took over, both with some masterful editing and production, and with the balanced, dynamic mix. The mix was a formidable task, but he did it with considerable skill, also taking everyone's opinions into account, which is a talent in and of itself. When he was done with the mix, he turned it over to Stephen for the mastering, which the latter did to everyone's satisfaction, as always.

This is the first song the Eclectic Collective has done with David, Elpi, and Ron, and we all hope it's the first of many, as we welcome them into the EC family. They all have some wonderful music on their pages, too, so do yourself a favor and check out all of them, as well. We hope you enjoy listening to this song as much as we enjoyed creating it.

The Eclectic Collective -- composition

This song began its life when Ken came to us with a series of drum skeletons about half a year ago with the intent of starting several McDonald's themed songs that The Mysterious Decibel was writing for the group. Well MD had some life getting in the way and then decided to pursue another project full time, leaving us with four solid songs, but without vocals. Ken ended up supplying the solid lead vocals and harmonies you hear the whole way through, with original lyrics that he also wrote.
  But before any of that happened, we got this song together. Stephen was first up, coming up with the main guitar riffs that carry the whole way through. Josh responded quickly to the his guitar parts with some matching bass to go along with it. 
  About this time, Mark heard a funky break in there, and so installed every part of it all on his own, including the clavinet, organ, bass, and drums. Although, Ken is also still playing in the break, as well. When we had it pretty well set, Tez came along and added some fiery guitar to go along with Stephen's. 
  Once we had it in the can, we turned it over to Mark for his expert mix. Stephen mastered it for us, too, for the final, winning touch.
  This ended up being a satisfying product of The Eclectic Collective's teamwork. We hope you enjoyed listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.
