Leading Australian touring brand Thick As Thieves launch new in-house label as they welcome German duo Super Flu to deliver their ‘Pancham’ EP, accompanied by a remix from rising Australian pairing The Journey.

An influential name down under for the last decade, Melbourne-based event favourites Thick As Thieves continue to lead the way when it comes to the curation of international and local talent within the Australian house and techno scene. Featuring as the country’s premier touring company, bringing names such as Patrick Topping, Claptone, Andhim, ANNA, Rebüke, and Mathew Jonson to name just a few to Australian soil over the past few years, April sees a new string added to the brand’s bow as they launch their new self-titled in-house imprint, continuing their ethos of ‘Raising The Vibration’.

There needed to be an outlet to introduce those sounds and warm up a few ears prior to taking on these artists at tour level. Developed naturally across the past ten years, the label will bring tracks discovered on the dancefloor to a global audience and serve as a home for fresh music from leading international names including Monkey Safari alongside exciting, rising Australian talent such as Not Just Me. Kicking things off, 9th April welcomes the label’s debut release courtesy of leading German duo Super Flu, who step up to deliver their entrancing ‘Pancham’ EP following music via the likes of Dynamic, Crosstown Rebels, and Moon Harbour, backed by a remix from emerging Melbourne-based duo, The Journey.

Title cut ‘Pancham’ showcases the German pairing at their best, combining crisp organic percussion with wavering synths, eerie eastern-influenced melodies and rolling grooves, whilst ‘Nicotine’ weaves off-kilter leads atop of wandering stabs, sharp drum licks and snaking low-ends to showcase two original cuts packed full of quality. Rounding out proceedings, rising Melbourne pairing Jacob Malmo and Tom Evans, aka The Journey, up the energy and introduce pulsating bass patterns, vocal chants and hair-raising builds throughout their interpretation of ‘Nicotine’ - shaping up a slick label debut from one of Australia’s most important players within the house and techno landscape.

Melbourne duo Not Just Me return to Thick As Thieves for ‘Through The Blinds’, accompanied by Audiojack on remix duties.

Longstanding members of Australia’s music scene, Brian Fantana & Ben Silver’s Not Just Me project saw the two DJs and producers combine under one guise last year to reveal their debut single, ‘Syren’. Returning to Thick As Thieves, the pair link up once again to close February with ‘Through The Blinds’, backed by a remix from Gruuv bosses Audiojack.

Combining percussive grooves and snaking basslines with haunting piano riffs, ‘Through The Blinds’ welcomes an impactful cut that can shift the energy of any room or festival in an instant, while Audiojack’s take sees the Gruuv head honchos and Crosstown Rebels regulars up the pace to deliver a soaring interpretation perfect for the peak hour.

Revealing a collaboration immersed within Melbourne, late September sees Strawberry Fields and Beyond the Valley regulars Market (Sean Rault) and Memories (Oliver James) combine with one of the city’s finest veterans, Mike Callander. With a mutual love for creating unique dancefloor moments, with Market Memories supported by the likes of Camelphat, Denis Sulta, and Cristoph alongside Callandar’s work remixing Aussie rockers The Drones and The Jezabels plus playing in The MESS Synthesizer Orchestra, the trio combine for the very first time to deliver ‘Clover’ – joined by Gold Coast DJ and producer Little Fritter on remix duties.

Breaking traditional production conventions, with Callander warping and twisting the track’s infectious bassline to accompany the bubbling hooks and slick percussion laid down by the Market Memories guys, ‘Clover’ is a club cut made for big moments, while Little Fritter’s take ups the tempo as shuffling drums, snaking low-ends and soaring synths make for a no-nonsense, dynamic ride into the peak time.

Exposing themselves to the ever-evolving landscape of the house and techno pool, the Melbourne bred duo, consisting of Sean Rault & Oliver James, relish the lush workings of dance floors, bringing with them a zealous load of energy that they are candidly known for. After their latest release alongside Mike Callander - Clover hit airwaves and dancefloors all round, it was a no brainer to record their set from our Winter Series event with Bontan Grand Final weekend. Torren Foot B2B Airwolf Paradise - Winter Series (Live From Revolver Upstairs) [July 2nd, 2023]

Recorded on a Monday morning at the end of June, this set was particularly fun, so I’m glad I had the recorder running to capture it. One of those sets where everything seems to flow naturally with little to no effort. 

I didn’t realise until I listened back that I’d played a lot of older tracks, some of which I hadn’t revisited for many years. A nice snapshot of a solid Revolver winter weekend closing set.

I almost had too much fun recording this mix, as it had been so long since breaking out the recorder, and I had heaps of recent tracks to include. 

The plan was to move from the funk that Boogs lays down earlier into the morning to some more tech and bass-heavy stuff.
