Based in New York, CZ Wang is a DJ, producer, and engineer with deep ties to Vancouver’s influential Mood Hut collective. Over the past decade, he has played a pivotal role in shaping underground sounds, both as a selector and behind the scenes, contributing his skills to collaborations with artists like Huerco S, Nick Len, Okay Kaya, Daniela Lalita, DJ Python, Ana Roxanne, Jack J, and untitled (halo).

He holds residencies at Public Records and Eavesdrop, and regularly performs at renowned festivals like Sustain-Release and Warm Up MoMa PS1. His sets can also be heard at iconic clubs including Nowadays, Bar Part Time, Sunday Sunday, and Renate.

We're none too fond of terms like 'selector' here at the figurative 12th Isle HQ. We think it was a shrewd marketing ploy concocted by natural wine bar owners - and possibly the freemasons - who repackaged the spergy single-mindedness of record nerds into something that sounded much more socially agile and cool in order to distract punters from the exorbitant price of nibbles. Thankfully, the time of white label soundtracked £40 sashimi seems to be behind us, and DJing can go back to being obsessives playing odd music made by even odder folk without much in the way of pretence. Someone who encapsulates that kind of energy has very kindly put together a nearly 4 hour long sprawl and has stated that under no circumstances should this mix be enjoyed alongside thinly sliced bits of raw beef and wine with bits in it or there will be hell to pay. We is back with numero sette! aka lucky number seven. I know we weren’t gone long enough but when you’ve got good news you really should share it. 

This time around its a team effort, brought to you by the gruesome twosome themselves Pjenné & Simon TK, two of Melbourne’s finest on both sides of the turntables, in preparation for their upcoming ‘Earth Tones’ party at the Fairfield amphitheatre. Which follows a similar vein with a familiar vibe. 

Simon TK aka the melodic jack russell aka the cosmic van-damme aka DJ Gravy-Fingers aka the guy that plays ‘good’ disco, he’s been one of Melbourne’s legs for many years, making and creating the scene we so comfortably know in the neu-modern era. The man has two pies for each finger (DJ Gravy-Fingers) a founding father of the ever fun Wax'o Paradiso, XOXO (rip), ¿Club D'érange? and now Earth Tones amongst a few more handfuls of tasty ventures. The man can mix though, by jove’s have I seen this bloke do some amazing shit behind the decks, can command a dance floor like a bloody blue healer on show day. All of this and he still manage’s to stay grounded, he’s a true ledg who will hopefully continue to steer Melbourne in the right direction for the foreseeable future. 

Now, Pjenné aka penne puttanesca aka the little engine that done did aka DJ Compact Disc aka the walking record bag, if there was a formula that Pjenné followed to start her foray into this ridiculous game of ‘play the music’ then I would bottle it all and drink it for myself. A classic case of ‘shut-the-fuck-up-and-listen’, she spent years hanging with her cohorts, digging through their tunes, taking notes on their train wrecks, taking samples of sweat from the crowd, only to apply her knowledge from the very beginning. I knew from the very first time she put a needle on a record it was meant to be. Since then, she hasn’t looked back, destroying dance floors Australia wide and leaving no souvenir. She is ‘on’ 

The mix itself is an absolute trip through your own mind. Perfect road trip soundtracking. Stopping off in every suburb in the state of genre, from dub, reggae, street soul, ambient breaks (it’s a thing) and every single step in between. Summer vibes through and through. listen to it. You probably already are. 

Go check out Earth Tones this weekend at the Fairfield Amphitheatre for much the same from the speakers from much of the same good people’s.

Akuma No Numa（悪魔の沼）"WWWβ - EXT - at FESTIVAL de FRUE 2018 DAY1" Nov. 2018

JD Twich is one half of Optimo, the legendary Glasgow party and a label. Some time ago he launched a new imprint called Against Fascism Trax, attempt to “provoke dialogue that is fundamentally anti-racist, anti-sexist, non-homophobic, non transphobic, non-ageist and non-ableist”. This podcast is a two-hour segment of this set at Hotel Forum's Kitchen from Unsound 2019. Before the performance, JD Twitch said of his Unsound set: “This will be the first ever presentation of an Against Fascism Trax DJ set, an experiment in whether music can convey an intent non verbally.” Starting the set and threaded throughout is the Italian protest song "Bella ciao", which originated in the late 19th century as a working-class anthem and was adopted as a hymn of the anti-fascist resistance in the 1940s. The song takes on new meaning in the current pandemic, as the need for new forms of solidarity — with health workers, cleaners and sanitation workers, impoverished people and all manner of vulnerable populations — becomes urgently clear.
