Wielding his Morris Minor guitar fashioned out of two hubcaps and garden hoe, Seasick Steve is indisputably a living legend, and is recognized as such the world over--particularly in the UK where he has received four gold and one platinum records, sold out the likes of the Royal Albert Hall and and the Manchester and Hammersmith Apollo theaters, appeared on national TV, been nominated for multiple Brit Awards, played the Glastonbury and V Festivals, and shared the stage with the likes of John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl. In 2011, Steve released You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks, his first full length album for Third Man Records. 

Hubcap Music kicks off with "Down On The Farm," which Steve debuted live at last year's Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands and is one of several tracks on the record to feature John Paul Jones on bass. Jones also contributes mandolin, Hammond organ and more to the record, while other Hubcap players include Jack White on "The Way I Do" Luther Dickinson on "Home," and Dan Magnusson holding down the beat as he does for Steve's live shows.

The wry and dry songstress stopped by Third Man Studios in Nashville over a long weekend in the summer of 2015 to record a couple tracks and damn did she deliver! The A-side “Boxing Day Blues Revisited” is the slinky and bittersweet epilogue to “Boxing Day Blues”, the somber album closer from Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. It’s a strangely catching, plaintive reflection on the loneliness that blossoms when a person you care about treats you like literal garbage. The track is jaunty yet aloof, with CB’s trademark conversational lyricism in perfect contrast to the B-side, a beautifully dark reboot of the Roland S. Howard penned “Shivers” back in the days of The Boys Next Door.

Third Man Records is proud to present a truly rare musical oddity- a two disc collection of primal and unhinged Greek village music that at times sounds more like free jazz or doom folk, feral and trance-like as it is. After years of research, fieldwork and collecting, Christopher King-Grammy-winning producer, sound-engineer, curator and writer- has gathered together from his private 78 rpm archive the most mind expanding and libido inducing song and dance music from the rural hinterlands of mainland Greece and its islands. Recorded between 1907 and 1960, this collection contains the first and the last-the alpha and the omega-of Greek demotika- or folk music. And it is not what you would expect.

Remastered from the original 78 rpm discs, this set contains 28 previously unissued recordings made in the cramped, primitive studios of Athens, Greece, New York, NY, and Chicago, IL. Crazed Macedonian bagpipes, keening violins, shiver-inducing zournas and shepherd-pipes are found throughout the two discs. Cover artwork is by legendary underground artist R. Crumb and designed by Grammy winning Susan Archie. A beautifully thought-provoking if not radical essay on this music by King accompanies the lavish package. Not simply for historians or collectors of long gone sounds, this compilation is intended to push the limits of what we have come to expect of music, its purpose and indeed its origin. You will experience a profound musical transformation immediately upon listening.

Today, Third Man Records announces the release of Death From Above 1979’s epic live EP. For over 10 years, these international men of mystery, Jesse Keeler and Sebastien Grainger, have dipped their toes into whatever waters they pleased (MSTRKRFT, Deserts/Bad Tits, Femme Fatale, The Mountains, Black Cat No.13), and created songs that'll get you off your ass and make you feel things. 

A decade after a sudden break up, following the release of their rich and gritty first record You're A Woman, I'm a Machine, tours with Nine Inch Nails and Queens Of The Stone Age, and one foot in the door of the mainstream, Death From Above 1979 reunited and released their second LP The Physical World last fall. The duo picked right up where they left off and hit the road last summer. Amidst their resurgence, DFA 1979 decided to dip their toes in the water of Third Man Record’s Blue Room. The room which is home to the 1953 Scully Lathe that previously cut James Brown singles at King Records, and where they decided to record the epic live performance to master and be reproduced for generations to enjoy. United Record Pressing has completed the pressing of these records and they are officially ready for release.  The Live EP is set for release on April 22.</p>

<p>“We’ve always been wary of live recording experiences because they can end up so sterile and flat sounding and they hardly ever translate the feeling of the actual show. The feeling of the moment,” DFA 1979 said of the experience. “When we were asked to record Live At Third Man Records we agreed without hesitation. If there is one person who knows about feeling the moment, it’s Jack White. He’s the patron saint of vibes. We cut two twenty minute long sets straight to acetate. No second chances. Terrifying but alive. Third Man were such phenomenal hosts and the audience went bananas with us. It was such an honour to be a part of. The whole thing was such a rush, it almost feels like a dream.”

Continuing our commitment to shining a celebratory light on classic and influential music from Detroit, Third Man Records is honored to re-introduce the world to the undeniable importance of the Detroit Cobras. We will reissue the Detroit Cobras debut records  — Mink, Rat or Rabbit and Life, Love and Leaving — on August 26th on glorious black vinyl at a record store near you, and available at thirdmanstore.com for pre-order today.

The band has experienced many roster revisions over the years, especially when it comes to their touring configuration, but the perfectly irreverent Rachel Nagy on vocals and Mary Ramirez, one of the greatest guitarists to ever come out of Detroit, have been near constants and the creative force behind these two records. The first of the two releases also include noted Detroit photographer Steve Shaw (The Fondas) on guitar, the prolific Jeff Meier (Rocket 455, Nathaniel Mayer) on bass, and the pure drum work by Damian Lang (Two Star Tabernacle) making for a line-up of pure perfection.

As one of the earliest salvos in the great Detroit garage explosion of the turn of the century, the Detroit Cobras' Mink, Rat or Rabbit (1998) is a landmark album. Comprised solely of covers songs (as has always been the band’s MO) the Cobra’s spirited takes on Motown classics (“I’ll Keep Holding On” originally by the Marvellettes), garage punk laments (“Bad Girl” originally known as “Bad Man” by the Oblivians) girl group tear-jerkers (“Easier to Cry” originally by the Shangri-Las) and New Orleans soul standards (“Break-a-way” originally by Irma Thomas) and the end result is nothing short of a staple that any record collection is empty without.

Originally released in 2001, the Detroit Cobras' Life, Love and Leaving is the group’s best-known effort, coming at a time when bands like the White Stripes and Dirtbombs were also releasing seminal albums that started picking up recognition outside of their collective hometown. Hitting hard with songs by soul heavyweights like Solomon Burke (“Stupidity”), Mary Wells (“Bye Bye Baby”), Otis Redding (“Shout Bamalama”), the inimitable vocals of Rachel Nagy would no-doubt be a template from which folks like Amy Winehouse would work from years later. A landmark collection of covers.

The mysterious collective known as Man or Astro-Man? hail from the lowdown depths of Alabama, though their sound is hardly Southern, or American, or even terrestrial. Having released music throughout the ’90s and ’00s on garage punk stronghold Estrus Records as well as the legendary Touch and Go Records, they have wasted no time earning their places as mainstays in the American rock underground. Although they’ve released 10 full-lengths to date, chronicling quasar-hoppingquests and intergalactic misadventure in every direction, the centerpiece of their tenure will always be the band as they are on stage, frenetic, focused and swaddled in literal lightning from a homemade Tesla tower. Naturally, when the fine folks at Third Man Records began planning festivities for Record Store Day 2016, they could not help but indulge in the surf madness of Man or Astro Man? No doubt a signal of things to come—namely the first vinyl record played in space. The result is a retro-futurist surf riff bombast. The career-spanning set (which did include a Tesla tower and, ultimately, a charred drum set— yikes!) was a thermonuclear drag race and a welcome addition to a world-class live series.

Although there’s never a perfect substitute for being in the room when an artist owns the stage, Third Man Records continues to bottle the iridescent magic of the Blue Room with Man…Or Astro-Man? Live.

Third Man Records is excited to announce their second Greek folk music compilation, Kitsos Harisiadis' Lament In A Deep Style 1929-1931. Another spellbinding compilation exploring the depths of overlooked Greek folk music from the curatorial genius Christopher King, Lament highlights the virtually unknown work of the heartbreakingly haunted hypnotic clarinetist Kitsos Harisiadis. Pre-orders of the album are available now. The compilation will be available in stores on June 1. From 1929 through 1931, Harisiadis recorded instrumentals that have endured in the Epirotic repertoire well into the twenty-first century. Kitsos plays all fourteen pieces as if he were a Greek-Shaolin monk conversing with a grasshopper at his feet.

Through King's painstakingly thorough research and immersive storytelling, the listener is able to fully absorb the otherworldly aura that radiates throughout the release.

Painstakingly remastered directly from ungodly rare original 78 rpm discs and coupled with artwork by R. Crumb and design by Grammy Award-winner Susan Archie, the entire package is delightful in every sense.

Bill Callahan, fka Smog, is simultaneously a staple of strange American country, lofi, folk, and independent music. His lyricism comes across as challenging and deeply autobiographical, equal parts “poetry leaning on true-to-life darkness” and “three chords and the truth.”

So, it is fitting that Callahan’s live set would command the same sense of friendliness-with-
difficulty that the recorded songs do. With brief, candid, and charming interludes between older and newer material, an outsider can hear that this performance was obviously a full-bodied (and multi-era) engagement, no space left for distraction. “Jim Cain” is a phenomenal song in any iteration, no doubt about it, but this live recording is unabashedly disrobed, tender, and saved for a sympathetic ear. The full album is an experience; make it one you look after.
