I can't think of a better way to celebrate DIRTYBIRD's 10 year anniversary than by releasing 14 great tracks that I fully support. There’s no fluff in here. Everyone from our amazing talent pool has delivered their A game material. And l have also added a few great new names to the family. 

It’s hard to believe that this little project started in my bedroom in the Lower Haight, San Francisco 10 years ago. I can distinctly remember hand stamping vinyl promos at home with my friend Fernando and trying to figure out the best way to mail them to Europe.  I remember the very first guy to ever call me back about our music was Edgar Dirksen in Frankfurt, Germany, who was working at a now defunct distributor called Neuton.  This was the only place that would agree to sell our records back in 2005 and I still thank him for taking the chance on us. 

There have been many many people involved since the beginning. Special thanks to all who have helped me run the shop at different times such as my wife Aundy, Mike Bosley, Christian Martin, Adam Carter, Sharen Norden, Bryan James,  Luke Williams, Jonathan McDonald, Alastair Duncan and Stacey Gamble. Of course I couldn’t have done it without my good friend and the amazing music producer, Justin Martin, who helped shape our sound and also really define what it means to be part of DIRTYBIRD. 

A lot has happened in the music industry over the last 10 years but I like to think we have stayed consistent and managed to enjoy the ride. The players may change but the theme stays the same; keep it fun and funky. So please enjoy this very special compilation of our music and here’s to another 10 years of DIRTYBIRD!

Leeds producer Rich Wakley is the latest artist to feature on Coyu's house and techno juggernaut Suara. His appearance on the Spanish imprint follows up noted works on the likes of Lost Records, Mile End, Elrow Music and Kerri Chandler's Madtech Records. Quite the catalogue coming together! The 'Bumpin EP' is a energetic ensemble of upfront tech house weapons, showcasing Wakley's signature sounds impeccably. What's more, the release comes strapped with two well respected remixers in old school maestro Superlover and heavy hitter Wade.

Premiere: Rich Wakley - That's The Joint [Suara]

German duo Hanne & Lore already gained huge success with their debut EP Karma Supra including remix support by Tube & Berger last summer. Heading for the next season, the guys from Herford now impress with their second strike and two new originals from the Whatif EP. The title track sounds progressive and funky at the same time, Luna Square accentuates a more groovy nature with interesting samples. The rhetorical question is rather superfluous on Whatif, but definitely when. Our quick respond: here we go now!

How long have you been creating music?

I've been in this world for many years, but the past 5 years have been for real.


What do you use to make your tracks?

I love to know and discover all kinds of tools and have options to work, I produce my songs in Ableton Live and I've been mixing in the Studio One, I have old synthesizers like Moog Voyager, Jupiter 8, Juno 106, Oberheim, SH101 .. an I'm also have an analog setup for mixing and mastering to get the final part done in the tracks, my favorites are SSL Mixer, API 2500 compressor, Thermionic Culture mastering compressor, Bettermaker EQ and Limiter among so many other tools.


How and when did you first discover Dirtybird?

I've been DJing for over 20 years already, I've always loved it and also I've been following the work of the Claude Vonstroke, I believe I met his music in the mid of 2000 or so through the track "Who's Afraid of Detroit" a world anthem, and since then there's always something from him in my sets.


Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most?

Claude Vonstroke, Justin Martin.


If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you?

Never give up.


What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

The Chemical Brothers.


If you could time travel, where and when would you go?

I would go back to the 80's, I love everything that was done back then.


What species of bird best describes you and why?

Owl, I just feel good on the street at night.


What does Dirtybird mean to you?

Dirtybird is always a great challenge. A label that prioritizes music, they always give the  opportunity for whoever wants to get there with their music as long as the music communicate with the language of the label. DB is risky the new, disconnect from rules, try to sound different using the same tools as the common. It is a point out of the comfort zone.
