Golden (feat. Sia)

I woke up this morning and I was thinking I was gonna be clever about this, but I decided I’m just gonna be honest, ‘cause I don’t wanna have to lie.

I’ve spent all of my adult life up to this point in a big city, but I always felt out of place. Never had much space. I left home at 15 with a dream in my head, a few hundred dollars and enough courage to take a chance. I spent 3 years on Broadway, which opened the door to many wonderful things like my publishing deal with Sony/ATV. Then, England started calling my name and so off to London I went.

I made my first record, Wasted In Jackson, there. I was able to take the distance from my birthplace (Tennessee) and find a way to make it sound like my hometown in an album. After (too) many years of trying to make my work and personal life work in the hustle of Los Angeles, New York City and London I realized that I had never been in my happy place. I’m a tough bitch but I’m not a miserable bitch –  I like to be happy! So, it only made sense to move my life back to the place that makes me happy— Jackson, Tennessee, the place I was born.

It's a funny little town because there’s so much music that stemmed from here. Carl Perkins, who is pretty much single-handedly responsible for making The Beatles & Elvis Presley happen with the songs he wrote, was born here. George Harrison was a pallbearer at his funeral. Paul McCartney didn’t come to his actual funeral and requested a private service with his body beccause he didn’t want to take media attention away from Carl on the day of his funeral. People like Ray Charles used to come to my hometown just to play some music with him. They sometimes wouldn’t even charge money! I saw Ray play for $5 when I was NINE years old. I was a girl growing up on Music Highway (the stretch of Interstate 40 between Memphis and Nashville). The blues are in my blood— I can’t and I won’t help it.

I moved back to Jackson to find what was real to me again, and what inspired me to leave in the first place— the music. I hadn’t been lying all those years before but I was missing something. I was missing the food, missing the culture, missing the dirty, late night, front porch, beer-drinking part of my life that I can’t find anywhere else. This place has always kept me honest and it led me back to the music I made recently that I’m going to share with you now. I’m happy to be free of the fucking city life, happy to be free of the fucking stress, I can finally fucking breathe. I don’t wanna have to lie to everybody about how I feel.

That half of Tailor’s debut album was written in a day is remarkable enough. That those songs spilt out of the Cape Town-based singer without any warning is as strange and striking as ‘The Dark Horse’ sounds.

If We Have Time

Born in Brazil, raised in Cologne and based in Berlin, Dominique Dillon de Byington, aka Dillon, has always had a clear vision of her art. She already has two albums under her belt, and she actually regards these as part of the same work, since they tell a coherent story. This has always been apparent in her live shows, which are carried by a magical interchange between the dark-melodic songs of both albums. When the Berlin Foreign Affairs Festival asked her, in 2015, to develop a unique concert idea, she decided on a performance with a sixteen-piece women’s choir, which accompanied her and Tamer Fahri Özgönenc, her collaborator and co-producer of her first two albums, in the live performance at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele in July 2015. “I felt the need to work with voices and to create an additional layer that breathes in this space between the electronic music and myself. I was very attracted to this idea, so Tamer Fahri and I wrote and arranged the choir parts together,” Dillon explains. The choir injects a new physical layer into her music, which is dominated by piano and electronic sounds, and her own voice dances longingly in this space. The about to be released live recordings of the concert reveal just how naturally this new element slots into her dramatically minimal music. “When I started writing my last album, The Unknown, I knew it was the continuation of This Silence Kills in terms of both music and content. Now the two albums are being brought together as a release, as well as in the live shows. For me, this album could be called This Silence Kills The Unknown, the 28-year-old reveals. A film of the concert at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele is being released alongside the live album. And in 2017 this will be followed by a third studio album, this time entirely separate from the works that came before, which Dillon herself describes as an “album of love”.

Tailor’s story started at eleven in the milk section of a shopping mall where she performed a song about lip-gloss: the most valued possession of a young girl. Her first fan asked her why she was so quiet before her performance, and the young Tailor replied: "To save my voice, so I can scream on stage!"

Tailor’s 2013 debut album Dark Horse was nominated twice at the SAMA awards, she received another 2015 SAMA nomination for her second album Light, and a 2017 SAMA nomination for her latest album Trust Pt. 1.

Tailor’s songs: Shaped like a Gun and Wolf from her album The Dark Horse featured on FOX Network’s hit show: So You Think You Can Dance.

In 2016 Tailor recorded Trust Pt. 1 in Texas with Zak Loy, the lead guitarist from Ed Kowalczyk’s LIVE at Orb Recording Studios. Zak stated: “We experienced past and present scars, fun, happy, rude, mean, sexy, scary and sad emotions. I’d have to say I lost myself in this record within the first few hours after we started recording…”

Tailor collaborated with Ed Kowalczyk’s (LIVE lead singer) on a song called: Angels on a Razor as well as with Locnville, Nakhane Toure, The Muffinz, Yoav and shared the stage with KONGOS, Locnville, Matthew Mole, Cat Power, Goldfish, Prime Circle and counting.

In 2017 Tailor was asked to open for Johnny Clegg on his final tour. Sold out audiences in South Africa’s Teatro and London’s Apollo Theatre shared this honor with her.

The story of Tailor is also the story of why the world needs music.

In silence we can sleep but to be awake, really conscious, is to listen. And when you listen to Tailor you will find the strength to be vulnerable, and that some of your deeper voices are heard.

Tailor is famous for her energy as a live act.
